WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

A geeky 13 year-old girl gets her wish and magically wakes up as a 30 year-old woman. Lucky for her, she has a killer body and is a full time secret agent an ad executive.

IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

Obviously, this film is going to draw comparisons to the Tom Hanks classic BIG. As well it should. It’s the same general concept, but with a female lead. BIG is an outstanding movie and while 13 GOING ON 30 isn’t fantastic, it is definitely enjoyable.

So the concept won’t blow you away. You know what’s going to happen and at times you’re going to think you’ve seen it before. But it’s still “cute” and tugs at the heart strings just enough to keep you engaged. I also found myself laughing any time Jen forgot how old she was. Cliche, I know, but it worked.

I had a hard time buying into her acceptance of her new found life and the idea that a 13 year-old could handle the pressures of an ad agency. Then I had to remind myself that this is a Hollywood romantic comedy and not a documentary. There are some moments that will make you roll your eyes, but they're seldom and don't take away too much from the fun.

The real surprise here is Alias’s Jennifer Garner. We all know Mark Ruffalo is great (at least you know that if you saw YOU CAN COUNT ON ME), but I didn’t know what to expect from Jen. She pulled off the part with ease and probably set herself up for good roles post Alias.

VIDEO/AUDIO

Video: Anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1): Same transfer as before. Looks great.

Audio: English 5.1, French 5.1, Portugese 5.1 with Spanish, English, French, Chinese and Portuguese subtitles: Again, same stuff. Very nice.

THE EXTRAS

We all hate double-dipping, but it’s become a standard in the DVD industry. Heck, sometimes you even get a great new edition and you’re thankful for it. This is not one of those instances. I’ve never seen this before, but this edition is MISSING SPECIAL FEATURES!! Yes, you read that right. This edition doesn’t have the commentaries or a few of the deleted scenes. Oh, and the case smells like bubble gum.

Alternate beginning and ending (11:33): You must be kidding me. This can’t be happening. This is one of the “additions” that they’re selling. But would you believe that they used different actors and actresses to play the leads? Seriously. I couldn’t make this up. Absolutely horrible.

Fashion flashbacks into the 80’s (6:50): A bunch of teen “models” talk about 80’s fashion. Most weren’t alive then, but somehow they are able to talk about it. This is the only other added feature and it’s obviously targeted towards kids that don’t know any better.

Deleted scenes (21:03): These are all your run of the mill deleted scenes. A few were mildly funny, but all deserved their place on the cutting room floor.

Making of a teen dream (18:51): Key players get together to talk about the making of the film. More than fluff, but less than thrilling.

I was a teenage geek (8:01): The cast talks about how geeky they were in school. For some reason, I have no problem believing Jennifer Garner was a geek. I also found it amazing how much a young Jen looked like the young actress in the film. Also, does anyone else think a 13 year-old Jennifer Garner looks striking similar to a full grown Hilary Swank?

Bloopers (3:17): Typical, “I can’t stop laughing and I don’t know why” bloopers.

There are also a hand full of Trailers, Games for the kids, and a couple of Music videos

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

Don’t confuse a female starring comedy with a “chick flick”. This should appeal to male and female audiences alike. This is a good addition to your collection, but not this edition. Leave this one on the shelves and send a message to the studios that they can’t get away with cheating customers out of special features.
