WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

A local Chinese martial arts champion takes his quest to be the best in the world too far and ends up losing everything in the process. He sets out on a journey to discover himself and when he returns, he realizes he’s fighting for much more this time around.

IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

Jet Li has made some poor films in his career, but nothing in the past seven years or so. FEARLESS is no exception as Jet Li proves once again that he truly is one of, if not the, greatest martial arts actor of all time. This film showcases all of his amazing abilities as well as integrates the deeper meaning recent martial arts films have started to embrace.

The fight scenes, however, are done exceptionally well. Even though the wires weren’t overused, I still feel that they weren’t necessary. This is based on a true story and the wires tend to distract from that. The acting was also very good with Jet Li turning in another stoic, yet vulnerable performance that he’s mastered over the years. The film is entirely dedicated to his character, so the supporting cast really doesn’t bare much responsibility.

I really enjoyed this film and it’s clear that it has learned from its predecessors in that it doesn’t make a lot of the same mistakes. It’s more than just a martial arts film, but it doesn’t beat you over the head with spirituality or deeper meaning. There are a lot of great fights and stunts, but the wires are used sparingly and there are very few special effects. Overall, FEARLESS hits on all levels and makes for a good flick.

VIDEO/AUDIO

Video: Widescreen (2.40:1): The film looks decent, but there were several shots that look out of place and a little blurry.

Audio: Mandarin and English 5.1 with English, Spanish and French subtitles: The audio sounded great.

THE EXTRAS

Deleted Scene (6:47): This is a whole other fight sequence!!! I add exclamation points to highlight my surprise and delight while watching the scene. It’s also a really good scene that should have been in the film. Not only is it a fight scene, but it ties in two big scenes in the film.

A Fearless Journey (16:05): This is pretty much a promotional piece for the film. It briefly touches on the fact that this will be Jet Li’s final martial arts film. It spends most of its time discussing the true meaning of Wushu and how that plays out in the film. It’s decent, but kind of a let down after watching that deleted scene.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

I don’t think FEARLESS will win over anyone that wasn’t already a fan of martial arts films, but it’s definitely a delight to those of us that were already fans. It has a good story, great fights and of course, Jet Li.
