WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

A young woman deals with the normal challenges that come with being a young woman. However, her over-bearing and controlling mother makes everything worse and somehow she has to find a way to find true love and keep her mother happy.

IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

I absolutely hate the term “chick-flick”, mainly because I like most of the movies that receive that label. However, every now and then there comes a movie that guys just don’t get. I think this would be one of those movies.

Basically, all of the characters got on my nerves. Diane Keaton’s character annoyed me because she was so controlling and invasive in her daughter’s life. She meddled in virtually every aspect and the daughter (Mandy Moore) just let her. Then there’s Mandy Moore’s character who had no backbone and was directly responsible for most of the things that were wrong with her life, yet blamed everyone but herself. Also, everyone in the film needed to learn what the word “communication” means because none of them seem to know how to use it.

These things would be fine if everyone learned their lesson at the end of the movie. Unfortunately, no one did. The daughter was giving it up to two different guys and still manages to keep the one she wants with no consequence. The mom remains annoying throughout the film and still manages to not learn anything. Overall, it was a frustrating film for someone that has common sense.

However, like I said in the beginning, I think the female crowd might be able to get more from this than the male crowd. After all, it does center on the mother-daughter relationship. That happens to be something I know nothing about. Even though that’s true, I still feel the movie had enough problems to annoy just about everyone.

VIDEO/AUDIO

Video: Widescreen (1.78:1): This was a decent transfer that actually looked pretty clear.

Audio: English and French 5.1, English and French 2.0 with English subtitles: The audio was also nice, even though surround channels weren’t needed or used very often.

THE EXTRAS

Making of Because I Said So (7:55): This is your standard making-of featurette. It has input from just about everyone, but still feels a little too familiar. I will give it credit for keeping the movie scenes to a minimum, but I was still pretty bored.

Designing a Wilder World (5:35): This is five minutes of looking at the settings and costumes and how they affect the story and characters respectively. For a movie set in the present, with no real costumes to speak of, I was surprised they could fill up five minutes. Needless to say, this was also pretty boring.

There are also some Previews and a Music Video

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

I can safely say this is a do not watch for the guys, but the ladies will have to judge for yourself. I guess if you have a controlling mom or a gullible daughter, you might be able to relate. But do a favor to the men in your life; don’t make them watch it.
