This takes the basic plot of 300 and inserts jokes wherever they can. So basically, King Leonidus and a few soldiers set off to defend Sparta from an evil king.
I’ve made no secret about my disdain for Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer over the years. While Uwe Boll gets smacked around for making horrible films, at least he’s trying. These two are making a mockery of the American public and they haven’t put forth an effort in a film for a long while, if ever. MEET THE SPARTANS is an all time low for these two and I didn’t even know that was possible.
There was nothing even remotely positive about this film. It never made me laugh and I actually turned on my onscreen display so I would know how much longer this torture session was going to last. What’s frustrating is that they used the exact plot from 300 and then decided to alter the situations slightly to make them funny. However, I can’t imagine anyone that has higher than a second grade education would find this film funny. And I apologize in advance if I’ve offended any kindergarten or first graders out there.
Is Carmen Electra still hot? I’m not so sure. It’s impressive what make-up can cover up these days, but she is just a few years past her prime. I assume that she’s the only one they could get to degrade herself enough to star in this film. Everyone else is here just for the paycheck, but there’s nothing anyone could have done to make this film any better.
I’ll usually give a film some credit if I think the main players involved are trying, but I think this is Friedberg and Seltzer’s big F-U to the general public. They’re basically saying that they can take any moderately popular film and make a few jokes and people will pay to see it. They even made it “R” to show that it’s the adult population that’s ignorant, not the kids. This movie says more about its audience than it ever could on the screen.
Video: Widescreen (1.85:1): This was a decent transfer
Audio: English 5.1, French 2.0 with English and Spanish subtitles: The audio was also decent.
Commentary with Jason Friedberg, Nicole Parker, Mark Barrett Holte, Kenn Sorbo, Sean Maguire and Aaron Seltzer: Not much of an effort was made to stick to the events on screen, but with 6 people participating in the commentary, what can you expect? Despite my hatred for the film, I have to admit that this was a mildly amusing commentary. They made me laugh a few times and they keep the track rolling.
Prepare for Thrusting (5:14): If this had been a featurette with half naked women working out, I would have enjoyed watching it much more. Instead, it was a featurette with half naked men working out. So imagine my disappointment. It’s kind of a spoof on the preparation they did for the film.
Gag Reel (4:16): I find gag reels on spoofs to be a little redundant. This is mainly a bunch of line mix-ups and laughing. It’s your typical gag reel with nothing too amusing in it.

This film is horrible. If you thought EPIC MOVIE was bad, this was even worse. I would be surprised if you even break a smile while watching this film.
