WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

A newly dead, married couple seeks help to rid their house of its new owners. Set on making their lives miserable and possessing the ability to do strange things, the new guest wreaks havoc on just about everyone.

IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

Tim Burton’s films have gotten consistently better with each new film he makes. Sure, there are some that I enjoy more than others, but when you compare the directing and production quality of BEETLEJUICE to SWEENEY TODD, there’s really not much competition. Although Burton has kept his unique and strange tone, he’s managed to improve upon his craft and that’s a testament to how good of a director he really is.

As far as the movie itself, I’m probably in the minority in the fact that I still don’t find BEETLEJUICE to be that great of a film. I like it, but I know there are people out there that go crazy for it. I definitely appreciate the originality of it and the great performance by Michael Keaton, but I just don’t enjoy it as a film. This is probably the third or fourth time I’ve seen it and each time I grew tired of the stunts and tricks of BEETLEJUICE.

BEETLEJUICE teeters somewhere between a kid’s film and an adult horror film. It’s a line that few directors dare to walk, but Tim Burton has done it several times. This one felt like he was holding back most of the time. I wonder what he would have done if he could have taken his gloves off and had another $10 million or so to work with. I also wanted better dialogue for the characters. Keaton has a way of delivering great, sarcastic lines and he needed more fodder for this role that he just didn’t get. However, at the end of the day, BEETLEJUICE is a twisted, nice fairy tale of a film that is still more orginal than 95% of the films made today.

VIDEO/AUDIO

Video: Widescreen (1.85:1): BEETLEJUICE has never looked better than on this Blu-ray. Colors were bright and vibrant, which is important in a Tim Burton film.

Audio: English and French 5.1, Spanish and English 2.0 with English, French and Spanish subtitles: The audio was also very nice and I’m glad WB gave us a TrueHD track.

THE EXTRAS

Sorry, but I have to give a big thumbs down to WB for not doing more with this release. Even a making of featurette would have been welcomed.

All we get are some Bonus Episodes from the TV show, and a Music only track

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

This Blu-ray is an easy recommend for fans of the film that don’t yet own a copy. If you’re neutral on it, I wouldn’t bother with the Blu-ray as the special features weren’t enough to merit an upgrade.
