Bond is enlisted to help recover a secret British machine used to control submarines. His quest takes him to numerous exotic locales and forces him to utilize his full range of skills.
I know Roger Moore’s Bond has his legions of fans, but I just can’t buy the older Roger Moore as Bond. It seems that as Roger Moore got older, they put his Bond into more and more ridiculous situations and Moore was forced to go through it without breaking down laughing. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY is one of the poorer Moore films in my book. I know it has plenty of fans, but I just don’t see it.
For starters, I think the script was written on the back of a Denney’s napkin. It was completely hokey and was just a half-assed mix of previous Bond films, but with worse stunts. Moore seems to prefer the Bond with a drink in his hand as opposed to the Bond kicking ass. So he gives a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde performance. One minute he’s dead on with Bond, the next he’s going through the motions.
I think there’s a point with action sequences where you have to decide whether or not you can make it even remotely realistic. In this case, they should have left out the action scenes. I understand that Bond is famous for defying reality and forcing the audience to suspend belief, but they barely even tried with this one. The VW race was very amateurish and don’t even get me started on the ski slope sequence.
It also seemed that there were moments where they had nothing to do, so they thrust Bond into an action scene to get things going. The story was an afterthought and even with a Bond film, it should be that way. I've tried to give this film a fair shot, but no matter how many times I see it, I just can't put it up there with the best of the Bond films.
Video: Widescreen (2.35:1): The video looked amazing. They did a fantastic job with the video transfers for these Bond films.
Audio: English DTS HD with English subtitles: The audio was also very well done.
Commentary with Roger Moore: Moore is a blast to listen to and this track is great. Well worth the time invested. Even though I’m not the biggest Moore fan, I will buy any Bond movie he does a commentary track to just to listen to him talk about the film.
Commentary with John Glen and various actors: This track is better than the next one, but it still suffers from a lack of good information. Everyone gets sidetracked quite often and the track loses momentum.
Commentary with Michael G. Wilson and other crewmembers: I really think these two commentaries should have been edited into one track because there’s not enough information here to merit two separate tracks.
Deleted Scenes (3:01): These are two deleted scenes, but the total film time is about a minute and a half. The rest is the director introducing them to us. They really had no impact on the film, but it’s still nice to see some more Bond.
Bond in Greece (5:56), Bond in Cortina (4:19), Neptune’s Journey (3:33): Three quick looks at Bond at different locales and some behind the scenes looks at the stars. This is very basic stuff and does nothing more than show off the cool locations.
Inside For Your Eyes Only (29:46): This is a good look at the making of the Bond film and what was going on with the franchise during its release. This is several years old now, but it’s a great featurette into the Bond film and is a continuing feature on the recent releases.
There are also a series of vintage TV commercials, Storyboard Sequences and a Music Video
This is definitely not one of the better Bond movies, but I will freely admit that I seem to be alone in that view. I guess it really depends on how you feel about Roger Moore as Bond. Personally, if I’m buying these separately, I skip over this one.
