A top military colonel, an assassin turned reporter, a pair of smugglers and others try to take down an evil warlord hell bent on taking over the world.

Oh, STREET FIGHTER. The movie so bad it killed Raul Julia. The film so laughable it’s ruined all Jean Claude Van Damme movies for me. The video game adaptation so horrendously, unfathomably awful it’s actually quite an amazing thing to watch.

The hardest thing to swallow about this travesty is that it’s writer and directed by DIE HARD scribe Stephen E. de Souza. Exactly how does a man go from one of the best action movies ever made to a film with lines like “You have made me a very happy man.” “And next, I'll make you a dead one!” I can understand that the video game might not have a rich canon that easily translates to feature length, but that doesn't excuse the complete nonsense de Souza tries to pass off as a plot. The only time the film remotely feels like the game is the very last frame. Way to go, de Souza.

However, bad writing can only get one so far; it takes a truly awe-inspiringly miscast group of actors to pull off something so poorly as STREET FIGHTER. The Muscles from Brussels stars as American military hero Colonel Guile, and with his unnaturally long pauses and random syllable emphasis, every sentence out of his mouth is a one-liner. And of course there’s the late Raul Julia in his final film appearance as the constantly monologuing M. Bison. I won't speak ill of the dead, except to say: Mr. Julia, I hope your death was a murder suicide that involved your agent.

I could go on about the hilarious racial portrayals, blatant homoeroticism, and more, but let me point you to my Awfully Good column with in depth analysis and video evidence of how this is one of the worst movies ever made.

Video: 2.35:1 widescreen. Good enough to see the cheap ass sets and production value.

Audio: 5.1 Dolby Digital surround. Good enough to hear Van Damme but not understand him.

It’s bad when the first thing your DVD pimps out are the trailers.

Commentary by writer/director Steven E. DeSouza: The director discusses the film seriously, as if it’s not universally accepted as one of the worst movies ever. It’s almost worth listening to just for the disbelief.

The Making of Street Fighter (5:56): An EPK from the films release is just PR fluff. Though some of the behind the scenes footage and interviews with Van Damme and Julia are fun.

Outtakes (3:09): These are not outtakes sadly (can you imagine the parts of Van Damme’s performance they didn’t use?), but just raw behind the scenes footage from a few scenes.

Deleted Scenes (2:11): Both are of Chun Li and neither are interesting.

There’s also some Storyboard Sequences, random footage from the Video Games, (including the horrible Movie Video Game which features the real life actors in a Mortak Kombat ripoff, ironically), a couple Cyberwalks (whatever the hell that is) and Trailers for more SF games and anime.

A perfect storm of suck from all angles, STREET FIGHTER is epic in it’s badness. So much so, that I’m actually going to suggest you watch this for hilarity’s sake.
