WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

Tinker Bell is given a great honor; to create this year’s Autumn Revelry scepter. But she breaks the precious moonstone by accident, and as a result, sets off to find a magical mirror which can grant her one wish to fix her mistake.

IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

I loved Peter Pan and the magnificent world of Neverland when I was a kid, and of all the characters featured within this lavish Disney tale, I never thought we’d see a full length Disney spin off featuring Tinker Bell (especially considering she was miniature fairy that couldn’t talk). Thankfully this is not the case here with TINKER BELL AND THE LOST TREASURE. Instead, we’re introduced to the world of fairies preparing for their Autumn Harvest ritual which rings a bit similar to the ants of A BUGS LIFE. This was good news to me as I rather enjoyed A BUGS LIFE just as I enjoyed Tinker Bell’s adventure.

A lot of these Disney movies of late feature the same setup story wise; there’s a coming event which requires something tangible to make it complete (in this case a moonstone atop scepter to collect blue fairy dust which keeps the Pixie Dust Tree alive and well), and then something happens to set treasure and a journey begins to make things right. I’m game with this sort of story, and I’m totally into the theme of friendship laced into this tale for the sake of young children. An undertone featuring good ol morals and values is a definite bonus in my books.

This film soars in HD with animation that’s top notch as far as Disney is concerned, despite this film being a straight to DVD feature and not a theatrical one. They could have just drummed out “another kid’s movie” here but instead took their time and came up with something visually entertaining as well as heartfelt in the way of character interaction. The voice talent was pretty good as well, featuring some familiar voices like Angelica Huston and Lucy Liu and a couple you’ve heard before but just might not know it in Jesse McCartney (Theodore from ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS and Roxas from KINGDOM HEARTS 2) and Mae Whitman (FAMILY GUY and who will reprise the voice of Tinker Bell in two more films in production).

TINKER BELL AND THE LOST TREASURE is a lot like many of the other Disney adventures of late, but believe me when I say this is not an issue as I believe in the saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I’m still going to add that some of the thematic elements as well as some of the dialogue are far beyond the comprehension of most of the children who will make up this film’s audience, but of course, this is nothing new. This is another warm tale of family fun that’s good for all ages and though I hate to admit it’s nearly upon us, this would make a great Christmas gift as well.

VIDEO/AUDIO

Video: 1.78:1 Widescreen in 1080p HD with AVC codec. This is by far one of the most beautiful Disney films I’ve seen in a long time.

Audio: 5.1 DTS-HD in English, French and Spanish with the same subtitle options. Even the songs in this one weren’t half bad, which was nice for a change.

THE EXTRAS

Bonus Short: Our two heroes give us a tour of Pixie Hollows and their beloved Pixie Dust Tree. A tad short, but the kids will enjoy it.

Blooper Reel: There are four minutes of funny (in movie) bloopers that have come to be a rather entertaining feature with Disney films of late. These are always good for a laugh.

Deleted Scenes: There are sixteen minutes of deleted scenes explained via storyboards by the director and producer of the film. With an 80 minute run time, I’m personally of the opinion that these could have stayed in.

Backstage Disney: This is a look at Disney Epcot Center's Annual Pixie Hollow Garden Show they put on to celebrate the world of fairies. Looks to me like the kids really are loving it.

Music Video “The Gift Of A Friend” by Demi Lovato: Again, a pretty cool tune performed by a cute Miley Cyrus looking chick. There’s certainly no shortage of jail bait in the music biz these days.

Sneak Peeks: There are seven trailers, a Blu-ray commercial, Disney Movie Rewards commercial and a BD-Live commercial. There’s also a second disc, a DVD version of the film and special features.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

TINKER BELL is definitely one for the kids, but in that regard is a more worthwhile choice than some of the other animation films out there which are more geared toward an older audience. And this 2-Disc feature contains both Blu-ray and DVD, making it the best of both worlds.

Extra Tidbit: They sure do make it all look easy, if only I had one of those magic mirrors.
