A disgraced Paleontologist (Will Ferrell), and his beautiful assistant (Anna Friel), stumble, along with a wacky tour guide (Danny McBride), upon an alternate world inhabited by dinosaurs, monkey men, and reptilian humanoids called Sleestaks.

I wasn’t a fan of the big-screen LAND OF THE LOST update when it hit theatres this summer, and my feelings about haven’t changed now that it’s hit blu-ray. I guess I wasn’t alone in my dislike for the film, as it was a pretty big flop- and probably something star Will Ferrell would like to forget about. In many ways, it’s his EVAN ALLMIGHTY, but- just like Steve Carrell bounced back from that flop, and Ferrell will bounce back from this.

It’s really not hard to see where LAND OF THE LOST went wrong. They tried to make a playful, campy update of a TV show that- let’s face it, is not exactly a timeless classic. It’s got a cult following, and I’m sure it was a lot of fun in the seventies, but then again they’re not exactly launching big-screen versions of THE ELECTRIC COMPANY, or THE GREAT SPACECOASTER either- so why bother?

As for Ferrell, this is NOT a good showcase for the man. I like him as much as anyone, but didn’t he learn his lesson with BEWITCHED? Hopefully his new film, THE OTHER GUYS will put him back on top. The only chuckles I got out of this film were from Danny McBride, and hopefully his new film, OUR HIGHNESS, will be a better showcase for his obvious talent than this. As for the lovely Anna Friel- here role is thankless, and it might have worked a bit better had they hired a full on comedienne for her role.

Video: 1080p, 1:85:1 widescreen. Overall this is a pretty flawless and colorful transfer. While I hated the film, I did like the look of it, and Bo Welch’s great production design looks great here.

Audio: DTS-HD 5.1- this is a pretty aggressive mix, and Michael Giacchino’s nifty retro score comes across particularly well.

Despite the film’s lackluster box office performance, LAND OF THE LOST still gets a fairly elaborate special edition. Leading the extras is a commentary track from director Brad Sliberling- although it would have been nice if Ferrell and McBride had joined in, with the track sounding a bit dry without them.

Next up, we get a pretty in-depth documentary, This is Not a Routine Expedition that runs almost as long as the film, and gives us a nice overview of the production. Fans of the show will enjoy Bradley, Sid and Marty: A Conversation with the Kroffts which is a chat with the producer behind the original Saturday TV show. Rounding things out are a batch of deleted scenes and we also get a fun featurette called A Day in the Life of a Big-Time Movie Star , in which we follow around Danny McBride as he’s mocked, and reviled by the cast. Pretty funny actually, especially towards the end, when an exasperated Will Ferrell, and Brad Silberling try to figure out a way to replace him digitally.

Unless you're a massive fan of the original series, I would avoid this movie at all costs. However, on the off chance that you saw it and enjoyed it during the theatrical run, this is a pretty solid package, and will please fans of the film (if any exist).
