WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

Also known as: one of greatest cartoon series of all time!! This show centers on two warring transforming robot tribes, the Autobots (good robots) and the Decepticons (bad robots). The final two seasons of the series focuses on Rodimus Prime struggling as the new leader of the Autobots as he continues to battle with Galvatron, the head Decepticon and those pesty five-headed Quintessons.

IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

“Autobots wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons.”

If that line from the original theme to THE TRANSFORMERS cartoon series doesn’t send shivers up your spine, then you should stop reading this right now, because you just won’t “get” what follows. I’ll tell you one thing, this series damn-well took me back 20 years to one of the happiest times of my childhood – coming home after school, munching on cookies and other various snack treats, pandering to my television set and getting ready to enjoy whatever it would treat me to. G.I. JOE and THE TRANSFORMERS were the two shows that I simply could not live without. I had not yet discovered girls and Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron et al were the only people (well, robots) that I looked up to and understood. It had been almost two decades since I’d seen an episode of the original TV series and I’d be goddamned if I still didn’t thoroughly enjoy revisiting this brilliant show.

The only drawback is that these are the final two seasons of the series and I didn’t get to see as much of my favorite transformers as I would have liked, namely Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Starscream, Shockwave, Mirage, etc. Sure, some of them still showed up now and again, but not nearly as much as the first few seasons. Still, the season’s final few episodes feature a resurrection that more than made up for it. My favorite episode would easily be “Only Human” (first disc/third season) which features a crossover by a character from my other favorite TV show while growing up - G.I. Joe! Who is that man? Cobra f*ckin’ Commander - that’s who! Pure genius!! That alone, my friends, is worth whatever this set will cost you at your local K-Mart. If you loved this show as a kid, I’m here to tell you that it stands the test of time; the characters, storylines, music and even the commercial break segments will bring back some wonderful memories from those fantastic Saturday morning and after-school viewings you had. I didn’t even bother to fast-forward past the theme song before each episode; it’s that addictive…it’s that wonderful!!

THE EXTRAS

Interview with writer David Wise (18 minutes): David discusses his role in writing for THE TRANSFORMERS, particularly introducing the Headmasters and Targetmasters into the program and the difficulty he had trying to give so many transformers personalities of their own as more toys were introduced into the marketplace in the later years. He also expands on the popularity of Optimus Prime and how he found himself thrown back into the series. A very welcome (and the only) extra on this set.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

Besides G.I. JOE, this would be the only cartoon series that I would ever truly consider buying in its entirety. It will bring back the innocence and wonder you felt back when you were just a wee one and it just goes to show how television cartoons nowadays will NEVER compare to what we were lucky enough to have twenty years ago. I loved this show and I love that they’ve brought the entire series to DVD. In fact, I’m still cursing out JoBlo for not getting his hands on G.I. JOE: SEASON 1 for us to review. Goddamn son-of-a-bitch…
