WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

A cool, young nerd from New Jersey is transplanted by his family to a small Indiana town called Eerie and finds himself getting into all sorts of odd situations, as the small municipality that appears to look like the All-American town from the outside, might just be the center of the world's weirdest happenings. With his younger buddy in tow, the duo get into all kinds of strange adventures.

IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

I remember really loving this show when I was younger and being quite pissed when they kept moving it around the TV time-slot, and eventually canceling it altogether. Almost 15 years later, I'm happy to report that the entire EERIE, INDIANA series has come out on DVD and for anyone who enjoyed the quirky side of TWIN PEAKS, the adventurous tone of THE GOONIES, the fantastical angle of AMAZING STORIES and the otherworldy aspect of THE TWILIGHT ZONE or the X-FILES, strap yourself on for a ride through one of television's more groundbreaking and surreal programs. I didn't realize this when I was younger, but GREMLINS helmer Joe Dante had a lot to do with this show and that becomes obvious from the first episode (directed by him), in which a Stepford Wife-like neighbor is apparently locking her twin boys up in Tupperware for slumber every night, in order to keep them "fresh". That's right...it's that kind of show!

This 5-disc set includes all 19 episodes of the series and if you pay real close attention, you may even notice a few familiar faces in some of them including Tobey Maguire, Matt Frewer, Danielle Harris, etc.. Harris took part in one of the series' most romantic shows called "Heart on a Chain", which both creeped and touched at the heartstrings. What a wonder for a TV show! Maguire's appearance as a ghost in "The Dead Letter" was another creepy, yet something loving, episode. Each show is essentially written as a "stand-alone" and from a very unique angle (mummies, twisters, werewolves, mind-reading dogs, etc...), making sure to spice things up with good humor and creeps all around.

The series is about as far removed from your contemporary sitcoms as possible, many of which tend to concentrate on the generic and obvious. One scene in this show features the lead character remarking about how his friend's parents seem to be enjoying themselves upstairs (they are making flirtatious sounds from above), to which the 9-year old responds: "My mother's not home." Nice! In fact, I'll go as far as to say that this show was "ahead of its time" (note the show in which Marshall realizes that his life is a TV show....THE TRUMAN SHOW, anyone?) and that anyone who's sick and tired of the same old TV grub and reality crap that's out there now, should pick up this sweet deal and return to the vivid and eerie imagination of your youth. Little Known Fact: One of the show's creators, Jose Rivera, recently penned the screenplay to the Che Guevara bio-drama THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES. Now that's odd!

VIDEO/AUDIO

Video: Full screen, just like on TV.

Audio: Remastered in 5.1 Surround Sound.

THE EXTRAS

This 5-disc set has absolutely no extras on it whatsoever. A major letdown. I wanted to know how the series got started, why it got cancelled, how everyone felt about it today...the works. Instead, I got some decent animated menus and two big letters in my face: F and U.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

A definite picker-upper for anyone who appreciated this avante-garde, and still very entertaining, TV show in the first place. Each episode is a lot like the X-Files, in that it builds a major mystery or creepiness factor, only to have it all play out in about 20 minutes and provide you with plenty of laughs, scares and moments of major quirkiness as you go. If you're bored of watching reality shows or cookie-cutter sitcoms that resemble one another -- other than the fact that their leads are played by different failed movie actors -- pick this series up today and enjoy!
