It’s great that LCD/Plasma/DLP TV’s are so cheap these days. Nice HD equipment is readily available for everyone and with Blu-ray prices coming down, more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon. But with so many choices, it’s hard to know what to buy.

Have a question about DVD’s, Blu-rays or anything regarding home theaters? Send in your questions to:dvddoctor@joblo.com

Hey DVDDoc,

I read that plasma TV’s aren’t as prone to fadein like they were when they first came out. I’m thinking about getting one since they’re so cheap these days. Do you still recommend sticking with LCD, or would you now buy a plasma? - Jack

It’s still a personal preference, but I think LCD is the better choice for the money. It’s true that plasma TV’s are much better these days regarding fade-in than they used to be, but they still have some long term issues that make me weary. There’s still a life-span issue and the high cost of maintenance fees should anything go wrong. However, I guess with prices so cheap, you could always buy another TV. Regardless, I’d go for a bigger LCD before I’d go for a more expensive plasma. Amazon.com has a good buyer’s guide HERE.

Why are we still getting new films being released on DVD and not on Blu-ray? – Thanks, Ken

I probably would’ve bought this had it come out on Blu-ray.

That’s a good question and one that can’t really be answered. Films like CHOKE, BLINDNESS and others have come out recently without their Blu-ray counterparts. It could be that the expense of making something Blu-ray ready isn’t worth it for the studio, but there are so many horrible films making their way to Blu-ray that I’m not sure I buy that. Hopefully the studios will head your complaints and start releasing everything on Blu-ray, day and date with the DVD release.
