Sometimes I have flashbacks of the early days of DVD when we get a Blu-ray release of a film that’s not up to Blu-ray standards. It’s frustrating, but I try to understand that studios have a lot of movies they want to release and only limited resources.
Have a question about DVD’s, Blu-rays or anything regarding home theaters? Send in your questions to:dvddoctor@joblo.com
Not sure what I’m doing wrong, but whenever I watch a movie on my SONY BLU-RAY machine, I have to JACK the volume up to 70-80 JUST to hear them well. When I switch back to my TV, it’s like SUPER-LOUD, as it only takes about the 20 level on my TV and DVD player. Am I doing something wrong? Isn’t BLU-RAY sound SUPPOSED to be sharper and louder? In my case, it seems to be the exact opposite! (my TV is Samsung flat-screen) Thanks!
I’m assuming you’re not using a receiver and speakers. My guess is that you're selecting "DTSHD" or some other surround feature on your blu-ray player, but your TV isn't set up to handle that. So there's a disconnect between the audio signal your player is outputting and what your TV is set up to input. Try changing the settings on your TV to 5.1 surround or something like that.

This is probably what your menu looks like on your Samsung, and these are the options you want to change.
If that doesn't work, then you'll have to change the settings on your blu-ray player to a lower sound quality. The important thing is that the settings on your DVD/Blu-ray player match the settings on your TV. The same is true for your cable box, if you’re using one. If you're still having problems, then when you select an audio on your blu-ray disc, make sure you don't select any DTSHD or TrueHD languages and go with the basic 5.1. That should give your TV an easier time reading the signal.
Do you know if there are any plans or rumblings about some studios going back and fixing some of the Blu-rays they released? Mainly, the lack of lossless audio on Speed Racer and the lack of an unrated version of Die Hard 4? Thanks-Jim

People still want the unrated Blu of LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD!
Not unless you count the re-release of T2 a “fix”. I don’t think WB will be rushing to re-release SPEED RACER any time soon since the theatrical and DVD/Blu-ray numbers were less than impressive (that’s a shame because it was a good flick). As for the unrated version of LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, I would assume that will happen eventually. Definitely if Bruce does another one, or if he does another big budget film with Fox.
