Life After DVD?

That’s it, I surrender. I hereby retract my previous statements that DVD/Blu-ray will never die. According to an article in the NY Times, Hollywood is developing plans for “life after DVDs.”

According to the article, “While DVD and Blu-ray will remain a huge profit center for years to come, studio executives are finally confronting an uncomfortable reality: little silver discs…may never recover their sales power.” And what’s the point of giving a format your full attention if it’s not making you the money it used to?

So, for how many of these “years to come” will DVD/BD stay on shelves? It’s hard to say, but the Times article points out that Walmart has been stingy with DVD/BD shelf space as of late and that Circuit City, once a major home video retailer, has gone out of business.

“Demand for digital movie consumption suddenly looks very promising,” said Thomas Lesinski, president of Paramount Digital Entertainment.

Other studios are also in on the digital revolution. A Sony rep says, “We can start to develop a digital service where it’s better than free because it offers consumers more convenience and choice,” while Disney will unveil their potentially revolutionary Keychest system in the coming weeks. And of course Amazon and Netflix have been promoting digital downloading for years now.

Ok simple you stream movies to your laptop you can connect your laptop to your tv. Laptops and mp3 players are mainly used to pass time portable devices, simple.DVD/BD players are used for home entertainment, i'm pretty sure you and friends are not going to be huddled around a pc/laptop or mp3 that's just gay. So you buy that streaming device for a one time fee, then another fee for hd. Anyway let us have both, don't get rid of the options to decide what we want. Just be gald we are buying what's out now. And fuck Walmart, tell them to start selling more bd movies.

What the fuck?!!! Why do people get off on viewing stuff like THE DARK KNIGHT on their computers and iPODs? Sure it can be convenient when revisiting a movie when your trying to pass time in a waiting room, but it's not the experience filmmakers intend; to see their imagery shrunken to the size of a plum. I've spent thousands of my hard-earned dollars on the latest High-def technology over the past year and I'm gonna be one fucking raging crazy-man if mini-digital viewing becomes the standard. I might even kill myself seeing as how movies ARE my life.

I too would rather have something tangible,
I just got a ps3 for games and blu ray movies,
I just don't want it to go away.
This sounds like a very lousy idea. PERIOD!!!

I rather have something tangible than take up space on my hard drive. And what of the extra content? What about people cramming the servers or not having the bitspeed to stream? Sorry if it sounds old but not...

Sorry if it sounds old but not everyone can convert their puters to Alienware level to get the maximum effect. That's just me.

Oh man... Something about this news I don't like. It seems HD content is going to be a pain in the ass here. Streaming HD movies is going to suck because my computer is just going to skip and freeze because it will take forever to buffer. To download an HD movie will take forever and take up space. Maybe I'm just not getting how this works.
