I seperate my tv shows and movies, and alphabetize them seperately. I have a seperate shelf for my movies, and a seperage shelf for my TV shows on DVD. I guess working in the DVD section at Best Buy for 5 years makes you kind of anal. Im sure there are others out there as obsessive as me.

I gave up on organization. I sell and buy too many to keep them organized.

Video Games/Snapper cases/favorites (little room for those on top though)
Regular, single disc DVD's
Regular, single disc DVDs/Single Disc w/slip cases/2 disc without slip/cases
2 disc w/o slipcases, 2 disc with slipcases, big 2 disc sets (digipacks, etc)
TV Shows, Movie collections (Oliver Stone collection, Kubrick Collection,) and then the more than 2 disc DVD's....

....Yep

All of my DVDs are in alphabetical order, though I've seriously considered sectioning them off in a way to keep sets, or fave directors in their own groups

I have over 1000 now.

Normal Movies are A-Z
Kids movies in a seperate unit A-Z
Box Set in a seperate unit.

The vault must be kept in order at all times.

At one point I organized them my dvds by genre, but that didnt last long. I have thought about seperating my 10 absolute favorite movies from the rest of the collection, but never get around to doing it.

i've got about 400...i have the tv shows separate from the movies, then the movies are organized alphabetically by the directors' last names.

All DVD's in alphabetical order except...

TV Box Sets are seperated but in alpha.
Criterions are seperated and arranged by spine number.
Bond films are seperated and arranged by release.
Classic Disney Animated Films are seperated and arranged by release.

Need to by more racks. Closing in on 2K DVDs and running out of room.

my collection is currently in boxes, the majority of it is in alphabetical order but some of it is just jumbled up

I organize my films in alphabetical order with my TV DVD's

First I have my VHS tapes. Those are alphabetical by name, then it goes into my Stand-Up comedy/miscellaneous VHS section, also Alphabetically, then into my Wrestling VHS collection, in order of date the PPV was (like King of the Ring 2001 is in the 2001 section).

Then my DVD's start. I start with numbers, in chronological order (like 2 Days is my first DVD), then into alphabetical order, then into Stand-Up comedy/TV shows/miscellaneous DVD's, all alphabetical, then it goes into my Wrestling DVD collection, again, in order of when the PPV was.

Honestly, nobody but me really knows where everything is. And I actually like it that way. My dad will come upstairs to get a movie to watch and he'll say he cant find it, and I'll say "look in the S's" or whatever and he still wont be able to find it so I'll get up and find it without even having to look.

I arrange mine by the side of the dvd case, I arranged by what looks cool iwth the side case colors. So if I have too many dvds together with white sides on the cases then I'll throw some black and red ones in there. And I keep my anime and tapes seperate.

First I have my boxed sets, then come my favorites of all time (or the ones I watch most often) and then the rest is in random order.

Alphabetical -- it's the best way I can keep track of my DVD's without forgetting which ones I have and don't have.

That's just too fucking funny.

But in all seriousness, I just organize my 870ish dvds alphabeticaly. Numbers first, then letters. I don't dick around with keeping the TV sets, and boxsets, and all that shit seperate. Just take all my fucking dvds, and put them in order alphabetically. Sometimes it can be a pain in the ass, but that's the price you pay.

I organize my dvds by genre and director. <--and yes this is as confusing as it sounds. Films, Tv Shows, and Stand up comedy are all seperated. I am currently running out of room.

Hey, my first post. This should be exciting. I've been a long time looker on the site, and having been unimpressed with other film forums as of late I have sought new refuge. But anyways, on to the question at hand:

Alright, my box sets are kept seperate from everything else, sitting in cubby holes around my tv unit. Movie box sets and tv box sets are seperated and arranged alphabetically. My foreign films have their own shelving unit, as do my "normal" films, again both are organized alphabetically.

I organize all of my movies in alphabetical order and then completely separate the TV shows. Then those shows are seperated into genres. They've NEVER been outta order in all my six years of having them.

Alphabetically for non-criterions; By spine number for Criterions.

I recently started doing this, and I like the way it looks.

I wish I had it organized, but I don't - not in any way.

The follow-up question is on what type of shelving. I finally bought a house and can now show off my near 700 movies and am currently looking for bookcases.

Do you guys use regular bookcases (which don't fit the dvds properly) or use those media racks?

As a side note, where did you buy the racks?

To answer the original question - most likely by alphabetical order (except for titles beginning with "The", which will be organized via the second word in the title.

I've got one big DVD bookcase I bought on clearance at Target, a VHS cabinet that I took the shelves off the doors, and then the shelves in the side of my entertainment center.

It's the last two cabinets that finally caused me to separate my TV shows and movies because I used to have everything together. With every season of Sienfeld, The Simpsons, and The Star Wars Trilogy so close together, adding two new movies from A-R caused some wasted shelf space when I would move everything down. I might have room at the end for one or two DVD's but because of the size of the boxes they would have to be moved down to the next shelf.

I separate by shelves...

Top row:
+ all of my favorite films
+ by genre - action, comedy, comic book, drama, sci-fi

Second row:
+ second favorite films
+ by genre - animated, family (some of my favorites are here too -- not enough room on top shelf)

Middle row:
+ TV shows

Fourth row:
+ "whatever" movies

Bottom row:
+ least favorite films

As you may imagine, many of the DVDs I get to review from Joblo I put on the bottom two shelves. :p

I actually organize them mainly by studio. That way they all look nice on the shelves and the spines line up. I also separate them according the package style, snappers together, amarays with slipcovers together, digipaks together, etc... All the TV sets are together and the box sets as well. It sounds weird I know, but you'd get it if you saw it.

ok I have everything alphabetical with #'s starting first
(8 mile is my first dvd) however I never seperate sequals (be cool is filed after get shorty). I have pulled out some sets (I wanted filed together) and keep then alph also. My sets included;
Disney Films
Animated Family Films
TVs Shows
Bibical Films
Bond Films
Bruce Lee Films
Hitchcock collection
Jackie Chan Films
S. Segal Flicks
J.C. Van Damme Flicks

I also have around 50 films I never seen so I keep then in a coby hole by the TV until I seen then then they join the collection. (they are not order but proably should be)

I have considered keeping a top 100 films (of mine) in a different case, but haven't done it yet.

I used to organize my DVDs by genre and then alphabetically within the genre- TV boxed sets as their own genre. But I've run out of room on the one small shelf I have, so now I just put them wherever I can find room until I can afford a bigger shelf for 'em. Ahh the life of a poor college student...
