Damn.
Much like the individual who wrote the report on the apparent cancellation of the FRIDAY remake, I had no idea that I was looking forward to it until reading of it's demise. :(
Yeah, I know. There were a lot of people pissed at the prospect of a remake, but c'mon now. The first film is nearly 26 years old now ( God, but THAT make me feel old. I can still vividly recall seeing it on opening day back in 1980! ) & a remake is bound to happen eventually. What difference does it make if it's this year or a decade from now?
Sure, it might have turned out to be an absolute atrocity like THE HAUNTING or THE FOG. But, it might have turned out to be a well done reimagining like Marcus Nispal's TCM or Aja's HILLS remakes. I was willing to give it a chance.
Still will, once the rights issues have been cleared up & it's put into motion again. Which it WILL be. One of these days.
A remake is just the next logical step after the "Jason in space" & "Jason meets another horror icon" installments. The only thing we missed out on was an "official" parody of the charecter & series ( THANKFULLY!!! ). But, that was done well enough in the SCARY MOVIE send ups, I suppose. If you like that sort of thing...

It was my understanding that it was supposed to be a prequel taking place between either:

a) 1979 (Part 1) and 1984 (Parts 2/3/4). I think it was meant to show how Jason "came back" to avenge momma Voorhees and survive on his own (a la his shack in the woods and so on).

b) Part 8 and JGTH (which years???). I guess it would have showed Jason's return to Crystal Lake and more bloody encounters with naughty teenagers/vacationers/counsilors/etc.

Either idea wasn't bad, they both could have told some untold events from Jason's events in the storyline . But you know, they may have thought too optimistically with the Friday, October 13th, 2006 date. So soon, and yet, it seemed too good to be true. If it eventually gets made later, all it means is that wasn't rushed for the worst.

I also just checked. There will be not one - Gasp! - but two - Duh, duh, DUHHH! - Friday The 13th dates next year in the following April and July. Maybe they can get the movie made in time until then. I can wait.

No, no, no. A next logical step would be to let Jason meet even more other horror icons (but make good movies about it this time).

This remake is one of the worst ideas in the history of film. I'm glad they might call it off. In my book, there is and will probably always be seven fridays.

I didnt know either ideas had been canned, truthfully. Jason's a great icon but since they keep insisting on screwing him up, why keep bothering? I'd rather enjoy my older films and have a love fest with them than be subjected to more embarrassments

I'm really hoping it's still happening....although they really should have started production by now if it's to be out for october...
My understanding (and extreme hope) is that the new film goes back to Jason's roots ala part 2 to 4 (in my opinion the best of the series)...I always said they have to get a Jason back into his woods where he belongs, no matter how they have to do it...I mean, they've sent him to NY, jumping multiple bodies and then to space for fuck's sake....it's time to make Jason scary again...after the suprisingly well job the makers did on the TCM remake, I think they'd accomplish it...For these reasons, I hope its just rumours that they've been shut down and we'll see Jason return again the way he should....scary and menacing...

Well, I sure it will still happen once they get whatever legal snags they need to resolve out of the way ( which I'm certain is a simple matter of finding out, who & how much $$$... ), it just doesn't look likely for it to get done this year.
Which, is probably a good thing considering how little time they have left to work with. I wouldn't want to see another horrific , nonsensical rush job in which making the premiere date's more important than making a decent movie like we saw last year with that atrocity known as THE FOG.
As has been pointed out previously, there are actually TWO friday the 13th in 2007, so they should aim for one of those dates.
And, I absolutely agree that this prequel/sequel/remake project DEFINITELY needs to reinvent the charecter of Jason & return him to his dark & mysterious roots lurking deep in the woods around Camp Crystal Lake.
I think that's the only way to do Jason justice after the series bizarre lack of continuity & inexplicable changes in mythology from one film to the next. Clear the slate & start over again.

Ive envisioned Jason being indoors more.
I mean, if there was a BIG new complex built an camp crystal lake, some kind of hotel or something. IT would be good to get him out of the woods and more in the shadows or around corners./

I dont know. I mean this series isnt dead. They just need to get more creative. I think Jason only killing campers andd thus being stuck at camp realyl hinders the possibilities.

As long as he wins this time i dont care.

They're acting as if it is really hard to just go back and make a simple "Friday the 13th" movie. It isn't. All they have do to is ignore "Jason Goes To Hell" and "Jason X" - the two movies to start screwing up the storyline - and also ignore "Freddy vs. Jason" - which was only a spin-off and not a sequel to either franchise anyway - and start fresh from Part 8 again. It's so simple...

After 15 years (since Part 8), after 15 more years of murders and disappearances at Crystal Lake...Jason is back! No explanation necessary as to how Jason returned from New York. It doesn't matter. All that matter is that Jason is back home! That's all. It could be simply set around 2006 or so. All they have to do from there is a write a good script.
