MARY CHENEY SAYS HER FATHER SAID EXACTLY WHAT SHE WANTED TO HEAR WHEN SHE TOLD HIM SHE WAS GAY

Tue May 02 2006 15:29:37 ET

Vice president tells VANITY FAIR his image might be better if he spent more time trying to improve it, “but that’s not why I’m here”

New York, N.Y. – In her new memoir, NOW IT'S MY TURN(Simon & Schuster/Threshold Editions, 2006), Mary Cheney writes that when she told her parents she was gay, the first words out of her father’s mouth “were exactly the ones that I wanted to hear: ‘You’re my daughter, and I love you, and I just want you to be happy.’”

VANITY FAIR editor Todd Purdum reports that Mary Cheney tells her story in a voice very much like her father’s, and that she came out to her parents when she was a junior in high school, on a day when, after breaking up with her first girlfriend, she skipped school, ran a red light, and crashed the family car. Cheney writes that her mother hugged her, but then burst into tears, worried that she would face a life of pain and prejudice.

When Purdum asks the vice president whether he thinks gay people are born that way, Cheney scrunches up his mouth, fixes him with a look that says “Nice try,” then says: “I’m not going to get into that. Those are deeply personal questions. You can ask.”

Mary Cheney tells Purdum that her father “has very little tolerance for bullshit, pardon my French.” She also says that one common reaction from people who have read the manuscript of her book is “‘Wow, you guys really have this close-knit, loving family,’ and it always strikes me as ‘Yeah, of course we do.’ It was very surprising to me that people would think we didn’t.”

When Purdum asks Cheney if he is fatalistic about his heart disease, Cheney says, “I am. I don’t even think about it most of the time. You do those things a prudent man would do, and I live with it.” Asked what he would have for breakfast at Nora’s Fish Creek Inn, his favorite pre-fishing spot in Wilson, Wyoming, Cheney responds without missing a beat: “I’d probably have two eggs over easy, sausage and hash browns,” then hastens to add that that is not his normal breakfast. “The day I go fishing, I get off my diet,” he says.” At a roundtable lunch with reporters a couple of years ago, two who were pres_ent tell Purdum that Cheney cut his buffalo steak in bite-size pieces the moment it arrived, then proceeded to salt each side of each piece.

Cheney tells Purdum that he has not changed over the years, but perhaps many of his contemporaries think he has “because of my associations over the years, or because I came across as a reasonable guy, people have one view of me that was not necessarily an accurate reflection of my philosophy or my view of the world.”

Purdum asks Cheney if, during his “darkest night,” he has even “a little doubt” about the administration’s course. “No,” he tells Purdum. “I think we’ve done what needed to be done.” Of the debate over whether or not the administration hyped the pre-war intelligence, Cheney says, “In the end, you can argue about the quality of the intelligence and so forth, but ... I look at that whole spectrum of possibilities and options, and I think we did the right thing.”

Doesn''t sound like he's as bad as the media makes him out to be.

It's sad when a person not disowning his daughter is considered being nice.

He did just donate quite a bit of his salary to charity, I hear.

Meanwhile, George W Bush claims he can obey whatever law he feels like it, but you don't comment about THAT.

Yeah, but that's all tax padding. It's not the same as if you or I donated money.

That's why there's a discussion about it in ANOTHER THREAD.

It happens. I posted an article detailing "Able Danger" and I think I got one response.

It's a long post and people don't feel like reading that much. Look on the bright side: at least you copy and pasted before not getting responses. Imagine if you'd had written all of that.

What the hell does Cheney or any parent loving their child have to do with how they behave when presented with almost unmitigated power?

Lynn, your way of looking at things and judging them lacks depth.

If someone didnt know Hitler's story and only seen the film archives where he is patting dogs on the head and smiling at children, they'd think HE wasnt such a bad guy either.

BTK killer was a wonderful father and husband...AND?

I really wished you hadn't mentioned his name.

But I think the real point is that this guy is being given credit for not disowning his daughter because she is gay.

Anyone following here?

No one should disown a family member for being gay, much less get patted on the back for not doing it.

It's like me saying, 'Hey man, there was a kitten in the road today and I swerved as to not hit it! Man, am I a great guy or what?"

Basically, our expectations for Dick Cheney have gotten so low, that his proponents are resorting to showing his human traits to show prove he is a great guy. It's pretty desperate to say the least.

You guys will go out of your way to bash these guys no matter what they do. I'm thinking about how you say I am always protecting Bush no matter what but you guys will never cut anyone a break.

Cheney, a conservative Republican, when his daughter was in Jr. High about 30 years ago- before it was so accepted to be gay, told his daughter that he loved her and wanted her to be happy. Most gay people did not have that experience. Free spirit Cher freaked out when she learned Chasitity was a lesbian.

As far as Cheney donating to charity, you can put it down all you want but how much do your beloved Dems give? Clinton was notoriously cheap when it came to giving to the poor. It's all relative.

Have some objective values and judge things by those. Don't have sliding assessments based on what a person't political affiliation is.

Lynn, she's 37 years old, and she did it when she was a junior in high school, not in Jr. high. That would mean that she told her dad she was gay sometime around 1985.

If I'm not mistaken, this was the year after Frankie Goes To Hollywood had a number one hit in America with "Relax"

NOT EVERYTHING THAT PEOPLE THROW AT THAT SHITTY ADMINISTRATION'S WAY HAS TO DO WITH DEMOCRATS/REPUBLICANS X 1000.

This has nothing to do with Dick Cheyney being a republican. It has everything to do with the fact that he was born of a jackal and will bring the end of the world and the reign of Lucifer.

Seriously, show some control.

And Lynn there are cheapskates on boths sides. Life does not play like a black and white film.

And I'm very happy that Mr. Cheney's personal life is running well, seeing as how it doesn't affect me personally as an American citizen.
