Haven't seen this movie but I've heard/read about it. What exactly would I be in for if i decided to watch it. Comments please?

I've done some research and it does sound pretty damn revolting. Obviously a movie to watch just to 'say you've seen it' (along the lines of cannibal holocaust, im guessing).

I've heard mixed reviews of it, but most people agree that it's not something you'd want to watch more than once...so in that case I think I'll pass for now.

Read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book read the book.

If you want truly vile and disgusting, read the book. The film is a (boring) walk in the park after you've read the book.

If you want the 'good' Salo experience, you get the book, not the movie (which isn't really all that revolting . . . except for the nut burning or shit eating if I remember correctly).

This movie is crap. Cannibal Holocaust is actually pretty good. If you want a "I've seen it!" good movie get something like Irreversible or Holocaust (if you haven't seen it).

Yeah, I was looking into getting those. Holocaust I'm probably going to watch in a few weeks or so (animal friendly version- of course). I'm sure if I read Salo then I'll definitely wanna watch the movie, or maybe not. Obviously it sounds pretty intense, with the scenes you mentioned...I've also heard there's stuff like
*SPOILERS*
cheese with sharp objects
not being allowed to deficate
sodomy
tongue removal
*END SPOILERS*

sounds pretty intense to me. Would it make your list of 10 sickest movies of all time (not counting the always shitty "faces of crap [death]).

Also, what about Coligula or what ever it's called. About the roman empire.

Get the regular version, don't get turned off because they 'kill animals'. I really wasn't bothered at all by the animal murders (except a quick shot of a *animal which's name i can't remember* getting it) and it really isn't because of me; it's the way the movie is shot (it's like watching a National Geographic commercial). It really isn't that bad and will make the experience less intense (the movie IS intense).

definitely watch the animal friendly version, its much more effective

as for Caligula, its not at all shocking....unless you find porn shocking. its also not the terrible film its made out to be

Maybe I'm confused. What's the "animal friendly" version?

It wouldn't be some cut where the animal killings are missing would it? Because how would that be more effective?

If you're going to watch "Cannibal Holocaust," then you have to see official version with the animal deaths. Yeah, they killed real animals, but it wasn't for shock value. It was for food. There was justification in it. You can't officially say "I've seen 'Cannibal Holocaust' and survived it and I'm still sane!" until you've seen the full version. I'm an animal lover, I HATE seeing animals being tortured, mistreated or killed in movies, but the one or two animal deaths in this movie are meant to be part of the experience.

Is Cannibal Holocaust the one where nothing really shocking happens until the last 10 minutes where we see the end of the students footage where they are killed and mutiliated. not really a shocking film boring sure but not shocking.

Oh, come on. This movie is definitely not your typical fare at at your local video store. You do see out-of-the-ordinary stuff along the way, not just at the end.

Except the rock-rape was pretty gross. Otherwise, yeah. The SHOCKING bits are at the end (because it's the actually emotional moment).

Im not sure how they were emotional considering the student filmakers were such jerk and played so voer the top they bordered on psychopaths. Also all the documentary searching for the footage that took up the first half of the film were so dull. There was nothing to there characters.

Oh ya forgot about the rock rape.

the first time i watched Cannibal Holocaust it was the full uncut version with animal cruelty intact. after the muskrat scene i switched off, i was watching the film but not taking any of it in because of the horendous animal killings which took over from everything else

after getting the Grindhouse release i watched the cruelty free version, without the animal cruelty to repel me i was able to get into the story and characters so what happens to them was much more shocking and in the end made it a much more effective film

the same goes for Cannibal Ferox, i have the uncut DVD, watched it, couldnt get into the film due to the animal garbage. i then edited all that out, watched it again and it was much more effective

or maybe that's just me

Okay, so the animal cruelty didn't really disturb me like at all (except the muskrat which was pretty gross) but if you're THAT easily affected by animeal snuff to a point that it'd make you turn away from the rest, then all right (eventhough there are like 4 animal killings in the entire movie and only 1 is actually disturbing [the pig was tame and the turtle was only gross but not brutal (it was dead when they chopped its head off! Don't let the reflex leg movement as its torn apart fool you)]).

Also all the documentary searching for the footage that took up the first half of the film were so dull. There was nothing to there characters. I thought the same thing. These folks (all except Faye, I loved her) were psycho assholes, almost to an unrealistic point. But there was SOMETHING about that scene (the acting, the whole "I have to save her!") was incredible. The theme by Riz Ortolani (one of my favorite movie themes evah) was beautiful and really fit by not fitting at all with the gruesome images.
