What a list! Very hard to choose the #1 role, as this is probably the best top ten list (quality-wise) I've done in a while. Great actress who gives it 110% every time. Guess I have to see NANNY McPHEE now.

A great actress and a superlative wit on and off the screen. My favorite performance? Definitely Wit. While having the constructs and limits of its play origins, Thompson really shines with dry humor in a role that could've been too baity if interpreted otherwise. It's a shame that she didn't qualify for a Best Actress Oscar nomination that year, since she blew away the five women that were considered.

^ Agreed. That was a spectacular, ballsy performance that didn't rely on cheap histrionics or false sentimentality. It was brutally, bitterly real.
What about Miss Money Sterling on The Young Ones? :D

Man, I have definitely got to see Wit in its entirety now. Caught bits and pieces of it on TV and really liked what I saw, and all this praise from fellow schmoes is making me eager to check it out.
1. Margaret Schlegel - Howards End
2. Miss Kenton - The Remains of the Day
3. Elinor Dashwood - Sense and Sensibility
4. Grace/Margaret Strauss - Dead Again
5. Gareth Peirce - In the Name of the Father

Superb actress, obviously, but I really need to check out more of her films.

Emma Thompson is so vastly and unfairly underrated. She is one of my favourite actresses, and has certainly played in many colourful and brilliant roles, but I must single out these as her best:
1. Margaret Schlegel - Howards End
2. Gareth Peirce - In the Name of the Father
3. Elinor Dashwood - Sense and Sensibility
4. Miss Kenton - The Remains of the Day
5. Susan Stanton - Primary Colors
Also, her screenplay for Sense and Sensibility was just brilliant. As was Ang's direction. What a wonderful movie.

The Schlegels are one of my favorite families in all of British literature and Emma and HBC brought them to brillaint life.

I must confess that I haven't seen much of her but I've loved what I've seen of her.
LOVED her in Junior, Love Actually and Primary Colors.
