View Full Version : Best Martin Scorsese movie post-Goodfellas?

Though Scorsese is obviously one of the best directors currently working, most people would say his best movie was made 1990 or before (specifically, it usually ends up being either Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, or Goodfellas). But the movies he has made since then are still really good, they just get overshadowed by his earlier movies a lot. So which is the best?

My pick would be No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, an amazing portrait of the most important musical artist of our time. It's certainly one of the best rock documenatries of all-time, up there with Woodstock, Stop Making Sense, and Scorsese's own The Last Waltz, though you can't really compare it to those movies since it's not a concert, it's just the life of Bob Dylan through the early stages of his career. It's quite long, but it's always fascinating. I guess it helps to be a Dylan fan though.

Also, I haven't seen My Voyage to Italy or A Personal Journey..., so my opinion can't be really official. But still, I made the poll, so dammit, I should be able to vote in it.

Casino. Simply overshadows all the rest, in my opinion.

Wow. I'll be the first (and hopefully not the last) to vote for The Aviator. The Casino is a close second, but The Aviator is right up there with Taxi Driver and Raging Bull in my opinion. A brililant and haunting characterization of a severely flawed character, while at the same time totally sucking the audience into this man's world, the glamour of early Hollywood. Brilliantly acted, and certainly one of the most visually rich films Scorsese has done, and THAT'S saying something.

The Aviator is probably his most entertaining and compulsively watchable film since Goodfellas, even though I don't think it's one of his best. It's still a hell of a lot better than the choppy mess known as Gangs of New York.

The Aviator but it's followed VERY closely by Bringing Out the Dead, which is probably his most overlooked gem and a really underrated flick!

To those who've seen "Long Journey Through American Cinema"--

What movies does he journey through? Having him let loose the endings in his Italy version was expected and all fine (especially since I've forgotten the majority of the finales, what's retained is the memory that those particular movies looked interesting). I'd liked to be prepared to meet Marty head-on in the American one.

He covers almost every genre. Obviously, you have to omit a lot and it is a "personal" journey, so he basically covers the films that interested him as a young man. He runs through a lot of Sam Fuller, Noir type stuff. His segment on Leave Her To Heaven called that film to my attention, which I will always be grateful for.

It works well as a documentary of the period, as a look into Marty's creativity and as a good checklist of films everyone should probably try to see.

Ill go wtih The Aviator

Gangs Of New York is one of the most overrated films in decades. Very messy and muddled with lots of interesting storylines dissapearing and really dull ones like the chemistry free romance between Diaz and Decaprio wasting our time.

Tough call, between Casino and Gangs. I'm suprised to see Cape Fear isn't getting any love, I LOVE that movie.

I also agree with someone above saying that Bringing out the Dead is underrated, I never understood why that movie doesn't have more of a following.
