I keep finding myself reminded of how great a movie year 1999 was, especially since 2006 has sucked so far.
I gotta go with Fight Club.

1999 = Best. Year. Ever.

I know a lot of people think 1999 was the best year and I definately agree that it was a great year. But, for me, it has competition from 1995 and 2000, both of which I thought were also awesome years.
And My top 10 of 1999:
1. American Beauty
2. The Cider House Rules
3. The Sixth Sense
4. Magnolia
5. The Insider
6. The Green Mile
7. Fight Club
8. Bringing Out the Dead
9. Arlington Road
10. Girl, Interrupted
Runners-ups: Dogma, The Hurricane, Toy Story 2, Three Kings, The Muse, Dick, The Blair Witch Project, Man on the Moon, The Matrix, 10 Things I Hate About You, October Sky, 8mm, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Eyes Wide Shut, Snow Falling on Cedars, Forces of Nature, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Wow. What a great year. Still don't know though if I love this year more than 95 and 2000. But, damn that was a great year!

Ah shit, you're making me choose between American Beauty and Magnolia... the agony!! Yeah, 1999 was probably one of the best years for cinema ever, even rivaling 1939, which is quite hard to beat. My top 10 of the decade:
1. Magnolia
2. American Beauty
3. Fight Club
4. Being John Malkovich
5. The Green Mile
6. The Matrix
7. The Insider
8. The Sixth Sense
9. The Cider House Rules
10. The Iron Giant (one of my favourite and most underrated animated movies ever)
Runners up: The Talented Mr. Ripley, The End of the Affair, Toy Story 2, Man on the Moon, The Straight Story, Sleepy Hollow, Dogma, Office Space, Princess Mononoke, Boys Don't Cry, Election.
God DAMN, what an amazing year.

I may be the only one, but I don't think 1999 was THAT great a year for movies. It was above average, to be sure, but I personally don't think it was spectacular. In fact, it's one of the very few recent years where I've had to resort to including a *** movie in my top 10 (it's usually all *** 1/2 and **** movies). For the 90's, I think 1991 was probably the best year, with 1993 close behind.
Anyway, my top 10 for 1999:
1. Sweet and Lowdown
2. Being John Malkovich
3. Toy Story 2
4. Eyes Wide Shut
5. Man on the Moon
6. The Talented Mr. Ripley
7. Three Kings
8. Magnolia
9. American Beauty
10. The Iron Giant

I agree. Hell, I think it was slightly below average, but that probably has something to do with the fact that three of my all time most hated movies were produced that year. :D
Magnolia was the best film of 1999, a close runner-up would be 'Eyes Wide Shut'.

I agree. I hate those films too, but you can't penalize a year that much for three really shitty films. :)
I forgot to give props to a few excellent other films:
Bowfinger (very funny), October Sky, and my Voyage to Italy.
I didn't know the last film came out in '99. It only came out on dvd a few years ago, like '03 I think, and that's when I saw it. Great film.

Ok, looking back, I may have been a little harsh with the 'below average' comment. 1999 wasn't a *bad* year, seeing as how it did produce certain pictures that were worthy enough, but I didn't find the year to be anything THAT special either. Overall, it was merely "okay" IMO and in all honesty I thought that several of the acclaimed films (from both critics and audiences) from that year weren't nearly as good as they were made out to be (e.g. - American Beauty, Three Kings, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, etc.). Personally, I consider 1994 to be by far the best year of the 90's.
I do like Bowfiner and October Sky a lot though. :)

I think 1994 is the best year for films ever for one sole reason.
But I could argue that '94 is the best year of the '90s for film.
Look it:
Clerks
Pulp Fiction
Ed Wood
Leon
Forrest Gump (well, some could argue this is the worst film of '94 :/)
Chunking Express
Hoop Dreams
Once We Were Warriors
A Pure Formality
Heavenly Creatures
IL Postino
Quiz Show
Bullets Over Broadway
The Madness of King George
Legends of the Fall
True Lies
Burnt By the Sun
The Lion King (maybe?)

Hummm…
Until that thread I hadn’t realized how good 99 had been for movies. With the titles you all have on your lists, indeed it was a Goodyear. I managed to see my favorite 99 film 6 times that summer. Back to back, twice on the first day. I was blown away by its commercial alone and must have rewinded it at least 20 times, I also remember waking up my ex-girlfriend so she could check it out. This flick really brought the science fiction genre into another level of quality and respect from filmgoers like critics. Like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, Alien (and Aliens), Star Wars and the Terminator (and T2) before it, it changed the Sci-fi action genre landscape forever, with a deep, solid story to support breathtaking action scenes, a top notch cast and a revolutionary visual signature and style. By now I know you know I am talking about the MATRIX.

God that was a good year for cinema, but anyone who has made a top list of 1999 and not include The Matrix is insane, beacause it's fricken amazingly amazing, it has an original story's, which is a very smart story. Great acting, and Great directing. It's just looks amazing when you watch it. And a very spiritual film with loads of meaning behind it.

very nice choice. I can't decide. Magnolia, eyes wide shut, fight club, American pie, office space, matrix, being jm, man on the moon, and blair witch are all perfect films for their genre. A year like 99 will never happen again.
Wheres the love for wild,wild,west?

Fight Club but I would have voted for Iron Giant if it were on the list.

It's hard to chose between Fight Club and American Beauty.
