The Godfather vs. The Shawshank Redemption

As most of you may know, The Godfather (1972) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994) are the top two films of IMDB's Top 250. Both movies are rated 9.1, and both are considered to be some of American audiences' most beloved films. So, I though about making a poll here at joblo.com, to see what the schmoes think. The Godfather, or The Shawshank Redemption?

Both films are in my top 20 of all time, but, it's really simple choice. The Shawshank Redemption, my favorite movie of all-time (look under my avatar).

I was having a lark with my vote though, so I guess we can say The Godfather triumphed.

The Godfather, without question. Shawshank Redemption is probably one of the most overrated movies of all-time. It's an excellent movie, but it wasn't even the 2nd best movie at the Oscars that year. Don't jump on me, as I said I think it was an excellent movie. But definately, in my opinion, nowhere near the range that the Godfather is in. It's insulting to the Godfather's incredibleness, in my mind, to lump the two into a poll like this.

I picked Shawshank. No real reason, the film just always appealed to me slightly more than The Godfather. Besides, I think that The Godfather Pt. II was better than the first film anyhow. Neither are in my top 20, but they're both in my top 100 somewhere high up.

It's really interesting to see how Shawshank's audience built slowly over the years to get to where it's at right now. I mean, just a couple years ago, it could have been considered a cult classic, but now it seems everyone's seen it, so I guess it's just a classic now. Even people who aren't "movie buffs" seem to love it, for the most part. And it deserves its status, as it is, I think, a classic movie.

That being said, it's still not in the league of The Godfather, which is something more than a classic. In every single department--direction, acting, writing, cinematography, editing, and so on--it represents just how great movies can be.

They are both great, but it's a fairly easy vote in favor of The Godfather.

Both are great films, but in terms of overall cinematic value, "The Godfather" is superior. "The Shawshank redemption" was my favorite movie for a long time, but "The Godfather" is a masterpiece.

Although it's not in my top 20, I consider this to be a flawless film. Yet for some reason I just don't like it as much as many other films I think are flawless, and even some that are flawed. But I definitely like it more than Shawshank, which was one of my favorite movies for a while, but then for some reason I just didn't like it as much anymore.

That's fine, but the fact that some people voted for Just Friends SERIOUSLY is just beyond comprehension. It makes a huge statement about the intelligence level of your average American.

Tough call.. I think both movies are over-rated, while still being very good... I went with the Godfather on this one (but still maintain that Just Friends was a better/more entertaining movie to me than either of these! ;))
