View Full Version : Best/Worst CGI creatons
Although I think that, in just a few short years, CGI has become way too overused(look at the last 2 Star Wars films & you'll see what I mean), there are moments when I have been impressed with it.
Personally, the CGI creations which have blown me away the most(so far) are the dinosaurs in both Jurassic Park & The Lost World & Drago in Dragonheart.
The worst use of CGI(& I doubt this opinion will change in the years to come) can be summed up in 3 little words: Jar Jar Binks

IMO CGI was better in its infancy. The dinosaurs in JP were more impressing than those in JP3. I wish theyt'd use more animatronics.
As for worst CGI. The scene in BLADE were Blade cuts Frost in half. That one effect put a dent in my enjoyment of the film. Plus SCooby-Doo looks like it has crappy cgi.

Y'know, I am such not a big fan of CGI. Yeah, it looks real, but does it FEEL real?
Take Little Shop of Horrors, for example. Audrey II is basically a puppet, but did anyone complain? It takes a helluva lot more effort to create an organic being from one's hands than it does to program a computer to produce similar results.
CGI has an inherent artifice that I cannot get around. I've read many complaints about how Spider-man seems too cold. Why is this? Could it be that computers usurp a film's soul? There's been a whole lotta bitching about Episode II's Yoda transformation...did anyone dislike Yoda in the '70's, before computers killed the whole anamatronic industry?

Star Wars CGI battle was pretty lousy! And "Empire Magazine" i think made the best comment on it:
"IT looks like an expensive Babylon 5 episode".
Best:T2: T-1000/Jurrasic Park, lost world, JP3/Final Fantasy(lousy movie, great CGI).

The cave troll in LOTR. Pretty horrible. The majority of CGI trolls in movies are bad (ex. LOTR, Harry Potter etc)

I really think the best CGI was is Jurassic Park. Nothing comes close to that now. All of Spielberg's movies have great f/x, though.
The absolute worst hast to be the Rock/Scorpion thing, or whatever the hell it was supposed to be, at the end of The Mummy Returns.

The Rock/Scorpion thing was fine by me, but the huge cartoon-looking ants in The Scorpion King were not.

Pretty bad?? I admit there were one or two moments but on the whole the cave troll was amazing! And how can you compare that to the one in Harry Potter?? That's just ridiculous.
All I can say is: Just you wait till you see Gollum in TTT. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think the CGI in Starship Troopers outshines many others.
I also think that the CGI Centaur in Harry Potter & The Wizard's Sleeve looked pretty darn lousy!!
