View Full Version : Box office Forecast for the weekend of 3/22-3/24

Next weekends has many big openings of highly anticipated film. There is the new action packed vampire sequel BLADE II. That lovable alien is back in E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL. Horny college boys go female in SORORITY BOYS. And this weekend we finally get to know if all those crew memeber's pain was worth it when we see STOLEN SUMMER which opens in limited release. What are your predictions. Mine are listed below.

BLADE II-

This movie is going to be huge. The first film was a crazy rocking vampire film. I loved it and I know many did. The sequels is going to slay the records. I think it will open with 45 million and finish with 210 million. This will be the early 2002 blockbuster before we get films like AOTC and TTT.

E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL-

This film will be a somehwhat close second with about 33 million and a finish of 82 million. I think people who remeber it will come back and a whole new generations of fans.

SORORITY BOYS-

I would predict this would bomb on a normal weekend but in a weekend where a horror film and family movie rule the ticket counter a raunchy short teen comedy might be able to find an audience. I predict a 15 million opening and a 41 million final.

STOLEN SUMMER-

In limited this movie will make 3.5 million and at the end with expantion and all might make it to 30 million. This kind of film would probably be ignored like another recent unknown gem called A RUMOR OF ANGELS with Trevor Morgan and Vanessa Redgrave. That is what I think.

i dont see blade 2 making anything near that.

it is a R rated film and blade is not as popular as the webslinger coming out in a few months.

i say 25 million blade 2
et will make 20
sorority boys will pull in maybe 8

I believe that E.T. is gonna do gangbuster business, much like the Star Wars re-release back in 1997.

I predict about $30 million in its "opening" weekend, and a possible $125 million total.

Blade II, I strongly feel will not match the final gross of the original, which was about $70 million or so. I do believe it will have a great debut, however since the film has a built in audience that generally goes the opening weekend, look for the film to fade fast.
I predict $24 million opening and a $60 million final gross

Sorority Boys, I believe is going to be a sleeper hit for Touchstone Pictures. Everytime the trailer airs in the cinemas, the entire audience including myself roars with laughter. I believe that the film will do quite well. Although it has an "R" rating, I strongly feel that a good chunk of adults are interested in the film as well.
I predict a $14 million opening and $45 million final.

I too believe that E.T. will make tons of money, like the re-release of Star Wars, and it will be #1 that week.

Blade II is going to suck like nobody's business just like the first one did, but it will make a lot of money (not as much as dh1989 thinks, I reckon, but still a lot).

I don't think Sorority Boys will make that much money, but it could surprise me. Man, what a shitty movie week that looks to be?! Thank God for E.T....

unlike Colin who may or may not feel his opinion will affect the box office, I think Blade will do considerably well, since it is a comic book movie.
I predict for Blade 2 will make about 27M in its opening, w/ a 68M final.
I predict that ET will make about 31M since its a classic, and is on the big screen again.
I predict Sorority Boys will make about 9M opening w/ a 24M closing

WHOA! That almost sounded like a mini-attack! What's the deal, Scarface? I don't know what I did to provoke that...

Well anyway, I didn't say that I think my opinion will affect the box office. Quite the opposite, in fact. I said although Blade II doesn't look so good to me, it will still make a lot of money. And I don't think Sorority Boys won't make money because it doesn't look good to me, I just don't think it looks like a big moneymaker.

I think BLADE II will be huge like I said. I have called my local theatre and they said all Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday shows have all been sold out. But lucky for me I know that my theatre always saves 10 seats in a sold out show. My friend pulled some strings and I got into a 3:30 PM show on Friday. SO like I said I stand by my big BLADE II gross.

WOW. you must live in a small area. There's no way that would ever happen where I live unless its Star Wars. I think Blade will do good but I personally am not overly excited about it and I know quite a few others that feel the same way. The first one was decent but not great. It was your basic action flick that doesn't hold interest after a couple of months. I actually didn't really like it until I saw it again on DVD but I wouldn't buy it.

I thought I read that New Line is trying to get LOTR back up to about 2000 screens this week(that's adding about 1000 screens) for the oscars and for TTT trailer the following week. Did anyone else hear something like this? If it's true, I'd expect LOTR back into the top 10 again.

Blade made around 70 million and got cult fame on video. Sequels tend to do better than original films and Blade 2 is getting better word of mouth than the first one, so I can't see it making less than 100 million in it's entire run.

The big question is: Is the market big enough for both E.T. and ICE AGE? I see ICE AGE dropping by at least 40%. Let's not also forget that ICE AGE's $46.3 million opening gross was partly due to the CLONES trailer. Another movie with a huge second weekend drop is RESIDENT EVIL. This is due to BLADE 2, which appeals to the same crowd. Playing on only 1800 screens, SORORITY BOYS should gross no more than $12 million, the same amount 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS took in at 2200 screens. And that movie had Josh Hartnett. Here are my predictions, for whatever it's worth.

1. E.T (2800+ screens) - $33 million
2. BLADE 2 (2800+ screens) - $30 million
3. ICE AGE - $28 million
4. SORORITY BOYS (1800+ screens) - $10.5 million
5. SHOWTIME - $9.5 million
6. RESIDENT EVIL - $9 million
7. WE WERE SOLDIERS - $5.8 million
8. TIME MACHINE - $5 million (another 50% drop)
9. A BEAUTIFUL MIND - $3.3 million (the Oscar weekend will renew interest in this movie)
10. 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS - $3 million

I'll go ahead and make some predictions...

1. E.T. - 35 MILLION
2. Ice Age - 33 MILLION
3. Blade 2 - 30 MILLION
4. Sorority Boys - 14 MILLION
5. Resident Evil - 13 MILLION
6. Showtime - 10 MILLION
7. We Were Soldiers - 7 MILLION
8. The Time Machine - 5 MILLION
9. 40 Days And 40 Nights - 4 MILLION
10.A Beautiful Mind - 3 MILLION

Think it'll be VERY close between E.T. and Ice Age at the top.

"never heard of stolen summer"

This is the Project Greenlight film. From festival publicity, it's not as bad as the "making of" special series on HBO would lead me to believe. It's kind of walking the same ground as Stand By Me, but with a first-time director. I don't expect it will set the box office on fire. It's only opening in about 15 theaters.

If these numbers are indeed right...

Glad to see Resident Evil is dying down a bit, but I can't believe that E.T. did so poorly! I didn't expect it to do as well as the Star Wars Special Edition movies did, but I can't believe it only made like $4 million!

Hopefully it'll make more today and tomorrow. I'm seeing it today.

I thought RE was limping along after a damn good opening,i think someone was doing an Enron with the numbers just to annoy me.57 mil so far,i'm ecstatic,it should hit my 100 million US domestic gross prediction i made before it was released.

Good i can stop crying now,it is a bonafide hit just like i thought it would be,good job Milla, and take that Buffy and Julia Roberts(i know she has nothing to do with it,but i think MJ is way more talented and charasmatic as both of them put together).

Plus it wiped the floor with the aging and past their prime "comedic" duo of Murphy and Deniro(still respect him as an actor and person, don't get me wrong).

The studios were releasing the same old stuff, and finally we get something exciting and interesting.Oh man,the Islanders in the playoffs, now RE is a hit, this makes my whole year.

I did'nt read all the posts, and i just caught the one about the switched numbers,i'll take my hand out of the keyboard(instead of taking my foot out my mouth,in case you were wondering).

Damn at least the Islanders will make the playoffs, that i'm sure of.

Well guys, I saw Blade 2 last night, and I have to say it was great fun!

It saddens me to see this movie doing poorly with the critics. What's so bad about it? It's got awesome characters (Whisler is easily my favorite character from the movie), a decent plot. But of course, a decent plot and cool characters all take a backseat to the nonstop action throughout this movie. This was a real crowd pleaser. Everbody seemed to enjoy it.

There was also some very funny lines in the movie:

Kid: What do you think?

Blade: Sounds like a plan.

Whisler:What do you REALLY think?

Blade: They'll fuck us the first chance they get.

Classic.

Another line that made me laugh was when Whisler said to that vampire: "Well some of us can't see in the dark you fucking nipple head".

Anyways, to that guy named Colin who says this movie will suck, I have to highly recommend giving this movie a chance! I think there's even a chance you might like it even if you hated the first one!

Good job Blade 2!

I have to admit, I did not like BLade 2 as much as I thought I would. I loved the humor ("You're human?" "Barely. I'm a lawyer." Classic yet again.) and the characters, but the plot was too...familiar. I guess I liked B2 better - when it was the first movie. I dunno, it just seems like the first movie all over again, except for the Reaper bit thrown in.

And yes, I agree, the Reaper's face DOES look like a vagina. Horrifying. Absolutely horrifying. I've seen it before, but on a face? I'm gonna be flipping out. I give Blade 2 a B-. Good characters and script, but the muted colors were makin my head hurt (I would have loved to be able to see what was going onscreen better) and the violence was a little too...out there. (Vampire and Reaper bites, with blood spraying, good. Watching vampires knaw at CGI/fake bones - not too interesting. Too...fetishy to me!). Great job del Toro, but I still want my Spider-Man.

The $57 million figure is an error. That's WE WERE SOLDIERS' gross. RE's cumulative gross so far is only $28.8 million. No way will it hit the $100 million mark. I predict $40 million, tops.
