Good topic!! Typically, if the film is based on a book, it has a good chance of succeeding. But if the book is based on a film, they both suck.(i.e. Pearl Harbor)

Favorite-To Kill A Mockingbird. Possibly the greatest book ever, made into a wonderful film.

Least-The Stand. I guess I should have known they couldn't do the book justice, but I gave it a try.

I have a whole bunch...

Least favourites: Everything adadpted from John Irving. The World According To Garp - such a brilliant novel, the film, like Simon Birch (which was based upon A Prayer for Owen Meany), does away with almost everything but the characters names and tells the least interesting of their actions. I will remake this when I get the chance. Oh, The Cider House Rules and Hotel New Hampshire, whilst not horrible, are nothing compared to the books.

Glorious Failures: Catch-22 and American Psycho. Both are tremendous films, but consider the sources from whence they came and you are bound to feel disappointed.

Favourites: The Virgin Suicides and To Kill a Mockingbird. The day I heard they were making a film of my favourite book I nearly protested the studio, Fortunately Ms. Jonze was as precious about the material as I was.

P.S. I'm aware Ms. Jonze is Soffia Coppola.

Some fab examples been mentioned already..."Trainspotting", "To Kill a Mockingbird", "A Clockwork Orange" (They may not have been appreciated..but I for one loved 'em!)

My personal favourite would be Kes adapted from A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines! Both the Book and Film are superb!

I absolutely despised it. I think it was one of those books that should have been left untouched. Thank goodness nobody has tried to make "Catcher in the Rye" into a feature film. Then I would really cry bloody mercy!

OOOHHH!!! I almost forgot The Princess Bride. Great book, and the movie stuck to it almost verbatim. Wouldn't have been possible without inspired casting. (i.e. Cary Elwes, Robin Wright-Penn, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane.) Very faithful, very good movie.

BEST: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
WORST: Angela's Ashes

I loved "Angela's Ashes" as a book, but not as a movie. The movie was so disappointing, and nothing like the book. The book was an excellent read... it was so intriguing, however, the movie wasn't.

FAVORITE: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
LEAST FAVORITE: THE FIRM (not a bad film by any means but I HATE it when a director screws w/ the ending of a book. I can't think of any other book-based films that dissapointed me as much as this one. My request is never to read the book before the movie, if you can help it.)

Hmmm, for worst, I'll have to say Sphere. It was a great Michael Crichton book, but the movie was, just okay...it could have been a lot better. The best were The Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Favorite: Stephen King's Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption into The Shawshank Redemption. Absolutely a perfect example of proper adaptation from short story to screen.

Least: Stephen King's Heart's in Atlantis to same. King's masterpiece of the last 10 years. The heart and feel was nowhere to be found in the film though.

:)
APOCALYPSE NOW is my favourite adaptation. Contrary to general opinion, I think it's very faithful to HEARTS OF DARKNESS even though it has a different setting. Superb movie, brilliant novel.

:(
THE BEACH is the worst novel-to-movie adaptation I've come across so far. Granted, Alex Garland's book is no masterpiece, but it's a solid read while Danny Boyle's film is just cringeworthy.

Whale Rider (just finally saw it this weekend and WEPT)
The Hours
The Harry Potter films
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Quiet Man (short story)

Tuck Everlasting (sweet family film)

I know I am missing TONS here.

Travesties:

White Oleander
The Scarlet Letter (Demi Moore version, for which she should be punished)
Gone With The Wind (always liked the book much better, never all that impressed with the film)
