Hilary Duff has issued a stinging response to the New York Times movie critic who described her acting as "talent-challenged." Stephen Holden has consistently slammed Duff's teen comedy movies and singled out her performances particularly. But Duff insists she isn't making movies for New York Times readers. She tells Elle magazine, "He doesn't really fit the demographic. So I could really care less. Look at me, and look at where he is - sorry! Would he prefer that I take some super-adult role that is inappropriate so I would have no place to grow? Suppose the next thing I did was this super-edgy independent movie where I was pregnant or shooting up. What would that do to my fanbase?"

Normally I would not care about a Hillary Duff story but this caught my attention. I think she has a really good point there. I think most critics do not really think most of the time when they put out reviews and she called him on it.

What do you guys think? Just an interesting little story to chat about really.

I agree that she has a good point. She knows where she is standing. Personally I couldn't care less for her movies, but obviously they have appeal to the young girls who watch them.

Yeah she's got an excellent point actually.

If she sucked in one of these more grown up roles that were mentioned then yes you could have a pop at her acting chops. But when she sticks with the things that will make her fans happy he's got no right.

Thank you Ms. Duff. She made an excellent point and I totally agree with her. If I had I daughter I would most certainly want my daughter to look at Hilary Duff as a role model rather than the cum bucket Paris HIlton or the coked out Lohan.

The thread title made me instantly think:

Are you sure the critic didnt slam her?

She has a good point, but pointing to the critic and saying " Look at me, and look at where he is - sorry!" is pretty moronic, mainly because A. It's the critic's opinion, and B. Because the critic has more artistic integrity than she does.

What fanbase? :D

Seriously though; this is one of the reasons why I hate most critics. She seems to be doing alright so far, not great, but alright. She's got her fans and if she wants to keep making those kinds of movies, then keep doing so. If this prick doesn't like her movies, stop watching them!!

Dude, he is a lame movie critic. As much as I do not want this to sound like I am actually trying to support the Duffster here, she has more artistic integrity than he does. She knows her fans, she does not seem to be one of those starletts who think they are better than everyone else. She is a pretty good role model and she realizes this which is why she made the comment she made about her fan base. This guy just sounds like a douche.

The guy is offering his opinion of Duff and her movies. If he didn't like them that's his opinion.

And yes, Duff does know her fans, but so do Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, 50 Cent, and other colourful characters around Hollywood. That doesn't mean they have artistic integrity.

As a critic, I realize that I'm not in the target demographic for a shitload of the movies I see. That's why I try to put myself in the place of who the film was made for and find some integrity or merit through that means. Two of the main driving factors I keep in mind while watching a film are "Is it made well?" and "Do I feel fulfilled/satisfied by this movie?"

Okay. So I'm watching two movies centered around female protagonists. Which one do I feel would instill its audience with a sense of pride and self-worth?

Or....

My point...Hilary, you're going to get bad reviews. You'll get them from people who fall within your demographic and those who don't. This is what happens when you put yourself out there; there are people whose job it is to see a wide variety of films, so you can't expect to hear only good news from the people who like you. And if someone isn't the only one complaining about the cruddy, fluffy scripts you're given, use some of your own pull and creativity to help craft the script into something your fans will enjoy but will also surprise the hell out of your critics. Show us you can do it.

In all doubts, Hilary Duff is not reading this, so...THE PERFECT MAN really did fucking suck. Badly.

Yep, it's true what this critic has said, the girl is "talent-challenged". A piece of shit can act and sing better than her.

Border! That wasn't Hillary Duff in Cheaper By The Dozen 2!
That was a skeleton that they hired to work on scale!
I'll just go into IMDB to prove that....
...
...wow, that was Hilary Duff.
I wonder if she ate more, she'd do better roles.
(Maybe if she ate more "rolls", she'd...maybe some pasta...)

I gotta say, I really CAN'T STAND this argument and wish people would stop bringing it up. The whole "you don't like it, don't watch it angle". You know if everyone actually listened to that argument this forum would not exist. Opinions would not exist. People would only watch things that they loved, and nothing they didn't love, hence would have no basis for argument otherwise.

The fact is he did see her movies because it's his fucking job. He's entitled to an opinion even though he didn't like her previous outings. The whole argument you're outlining would defeat the purpose of this whole forum. Fuck that shit.

Wrong side of the bed this morning huh? Christ.

I do agree though. It is his job and the don't watch it argument doesn't really work.

I still think there's something to say about this guy cutting her down when it's obvious she's making these shittly little movies becasue her fan base love to watch her in them. It just smart business. This guy seems to be judging her on the same criteria that he would a best picture nomination. When the time comes she may step up and try serious projects. Only then can we really judge her on how good an actress she is though. IMO of course.

Whatever we think of her, I think it's good she's out there making "safe" movies for young girls and their families. Yeah, they're not that good, but they need something to watch too. If she's not ready to tackle serious movies yet, more power to her. Not everyone should be expected to win an Oscar at 18.
