The folks over at Home Media Retailing have received details on new releases of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King will each arrive in newly packaged two-disc “Limited Edition” sets, along with an exclusive new behind-the scenes documentary. Each set will carry both the theatrical and extended versions of the film (via seamless branching), while disc two features an intimate, never-before-seen documentary created by Costa Botes. The feature-length documentaries, with more than 300 minutes of never-before-available footage, focus on a number of complexities and circumstances and affected the making of the movies. The discs will be available to own from the 29th August, priced at around $28.98 a piece. Stay tuned for further details.
Okay...I'm an LOTR fan...I have the current 2-disc and 4-disc editions of each film...But fuck this. Seriously. I'll admit, having the theatrical and extended cuts all on the same disc sounds tempting, but I can't imagine how doing that would affect the audio/video quality, which is essential to the presentation on an LOTR film. Plus, I can't imagine what kind of Behind-the-scenes material they could include that could possibly get any more in-depth than the extras on the 4-disc editions. There's double-dipping for a legitimate purpose, there's double-dipping for greed, and then there's this. This is just shameless.
The artwork's nice, at least.

I might pick this up, seeing as I don't own either release (I used to but we won't get into why I don't now), but it depends on the price that they sell for the first week they're available, seeing as if it's too much you could pick up both editions for the same price.

I own the three extended editions, and they're more than good enough for me. I don't know what else they can put in a documentary about the movie; even if there is something new, I doubt it'll be any more interesting than what's already on the extended editions. I'll stick with what I have.

Same, I love the Extended Editions.

Own the exptended edition, wouldn't touch this set with a 12 inch Ron Jeremy. I can't imagine how anything could be more in depth than the ones released already, unless ofcourse they go HD-DVD or BLUE-RAY and put the expanded editions on two discs.
Oh and for the record, now fans have to GET OFF LUCAS' ASS with the money hungry beast shite, cause guess who joined the game?

My count says that there are now 5 different versions of each LotR film on DVD (fullscreen, widescreen, extended, gift-set, limited) not to mention the three different box sets you can get each film in (fullscreen, widescreen, extended) and there will probobly be a limited boxset.

These DVDs don't seem to be coming with all the extra material on the 4-disc sets. And that's all the extra material I need. In-depth, covering just about every topic down to every last detail... I don't need all that info summed up to 100 minute documentaries. It's all there on the 4-disc sets, and that's more than enough to me.
I also have no need for the theatrical versions, because the extended versions are just MORE of the goodness that is the theatrical versions, and I couldn't care less about the length.

Since it is the franchise that saved New Line from bankruptcy and made like a gazillion dollars it's was obvious from the start that NL would milk this puppy dry. They are companies after all, however owning all 3 EE's this won't be bought because the picture quality will be inferior to the EE's unless they maybe drop the DTS but then it will not have DTS:D
Maybe I'll buy the upcoming HD-DVD or Blu-Ray because these movies have to be seen in the best picture quality possible.

I may actually get these, because I own the extended editions, and love those and the plethora of extras, but sometimes I just want to watch to theatrical editions to the films.
I never bought the theatrical versions on DVD because of their terrible extras, but 300 minute-long documentary spread out over the three releases is a nice incentive to buy this.
Plus, I don't think the visuals and audio will be hurt as much as people may think. I doubt there will be any commentaries on these disks, and the extended scenes are branched onto the theatrical cut. They won't be as great as they are on the extended edition, but that's why I have that one.

There's no reason to buy another LOTR DVD unless of course it's HD/BluRay. I mean christ, after watching the documentaries from the EEs I felt like I was an actual crew member that worked on the film.
