i'm not talking the "baddest-kicked-the-most-ass" here (although, they are not excluded) but one that was believable all the way...

I'd have to go with Al Pacino in Serpico
(the only one i can remember for the acting alone... not counting Dirty Harry and the likes...)

Also, Harvey Keitel in Bad Lieutenant was pretty convincing

Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Everyman doing some (basically) believable stuff.

Ok, I thought Sylvester Stallone did a wonderful job as Sheriff Freddy Heflin in Cop Land. I personally think that is one of his best performances. The part was done very convincingly.

Denzel Washington was very convincing in Training Day. I mean after I saw that movie I was telling myself "That CAN'T be Denzel Washington!" Ethan Hawke also put in a believable performace as the rookie.

forgot about popeye doyle. hackman was great and this is one of my favorite police characters.
