Are your/our kids being screened for mental illness (http://www.newswithviews.com/public_comm/public_commentary39.htm) at their school and undermining parental rights?

Wouldnt it make more sense for the teachers to notify the parents if there is any sign of erratic behavior? A teacher sees a lot of he or she wants to and the other kids will usually talk about someone who is acting differently. They don't need strangers coming in and asking questions- that could be dreadful if they label kids who dont need it.

That article is sort of misleading. You can't give a minor medications without parental consent, and most psychiatric diagnoses have as the final criterion "Subject is at least 18 years of age"
Doctors can say they have the symptoms of a disorder and provide treatment, but overall don't really diagnose people in the way the article implies.
I don't see how it's really a bad thing to provide free counseling services for kids, because usually the ones who need it are the ones who aren't going to get it (and vice-versa, thanks to over ready-to-spend parents).
My only complaint is how the fuck we can afford to provide this service in schools when really basic and useful things like music and phys ed are being cut.

That's what they're supposed to do now - assuming the teacher and parents are worth a damn.
Meaning - not like (teacher) Oh, he'll be outta here in a few months. or (parent) Not my johnny! He's special!
