This is huge . . . isn't it? I do agree with part that says there's too many people in the class-action lawsuit to be affected.

Nevertheless, the secret's out that cigarettes aren't good for you - so hopefully we won't hear too much about people suing tobacco companies. Now if we could only stop the people suing fast food companies.

Thanks for posting that- I think it was the right decision. I think the individual awards are still outrageous. I used to be a smoker and my parents were smokers and my grandmother. I would never sue for decisions we all made. The hardest thing I ever did was to quit smoking but it was my decision to start and mine to stop. Starting smoking does not come naturally. When you have those first few you want to vomit and choke and that is your body telling you smoking is not good for you.

I don't mind the lawsuits because it's a checks and balances-type thing in a way. The FDA and DEA outlaw things that are supposed to be bad for us, except some things. It really doesn't make much sense, so I see the suits as a way of sort of forcing public awareness, and forcing the companies to do what they can do to be upfront. If I sell someone a pitbull that's attacked 10 people, and don't disclose that info, I'm liable for any damage it does. Sure, they throw a warning label on smokes - no doubt, but at the same time they show a strong cowboy enjoying the flavor.

Anyway - money talks and bullshit walks. It's all a bad turn for a bad turn. The people filing suits are no more despicable than the companies that sell them shit. Yeah, it's freedom of choice, that's why people are choosing to sue over it. and the companies are choosing to provide more disclosure. Everything seems to work out. We can't have the government stomping down on everything. so we let money dictate proper etiquette (so to speak)

I just can't wait for the time when people start realizing how backed up the courts are, and how much more time is needed to get to socially-relevent cases --- I can't wait for someone to file suit against lawyers who take up frivolous lawsuits. Time is money, and right now court time is costing tax payers a hard penny.

I think they need to be held responsible for their marketing campaigns. The fact that they're trying to appeal to little kids is sickening and immoral. However, just because some idiots realize the downside of looking cool and have to have their lungs removed, doesn't mean that the tobacco companies are responsible... even though they are pretty sleazy people.
