Iis there nothing good to buy on DVD lately? Look at this week and the crap that is coming out. I own about 400 dvds yet have really slowed down to a standstill cause every week its just crap crap and more crap. Ive bought just one movie in the the last month or so when i used to buy like 3-4 a week. The Hills Have Eyes is about it lately ( a movie that fucking ruled over any recent horror movies). Am I just bitter or does anyone else feel this way?

Yeah, I haven't bought too many DVDs this year - I got Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (SE), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (unrated edition), and Blazing Saddles - and all at the same time. I think that's it for this year - at least that's it since the beginning of the year.

I've held off buying King Kong because I'm hoping for an extended edition, and I've held off on buying either of the Kill Bill's because I'm hoping for QT to join the two in one long ass movie on DVD.

I don't like the stand still either. But on the other hand I still buy on a regular basis thanks to two things. 1: Ideas, that lead to research, that lead to films I don't have yet in my collection. 2: A local store bringing in films (for themselves, I didn't special order them in). Films that were originally released months, sometimes years ago. Films that I am interested in adding to my collection and always keep my eyes peeled for when I browse.

I agree. Recently there haven't been any new films out on dvd worth purchasing. The last new film (not a re-release dvd) i bought was The Three Burials. This lull in dvd releases has really been a blessing though as it has allowed me to add some outstanding older gems to my collection that I would have otherwise been unable to afford.

But there are some great dvd's being released soon, most notably (for me) Brick (Aug 8th). There are also some rereleases coming out that I'll probably pick up like Apocalypse Now and Double Indemnity. September looks really good with the Proposition, Hard Candy, and reissues of Seven Samurai and Amarcord coming out.

This month I've cracked the 420 number. 420 being the number of laser disc titles I own.

For the past two weeks, it's been somewhat slow. This and that, but mostly not. I've made up the difference by getting stuff on sale from D3 (received Alien Nation --movie--, Crossworlds, Shaft In Africa and Space Truckers today).

This Tuesday I'm huntin' Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea season one, volume two and Weeds season one.

Anyhow... it is true. This was reported on The Digital Bits today (7/7/06):
Home Media Retailing is reporting that the pace of major studio DVD releases is slowing down. So far this year the total number of new titles is down about 10% from what it was this same time last year. This is reportedly due to the studios being conscious of not releasing too many titles at once - titles that then must compete for space on stores shelves.

There's your answer.

Hmm, that's odd.
I'm getting more and more stuff.
In the past month, I've gotten maybe 30% less new releases, but then I more than make up for it with older dvd releases.
Online sites almost always have great sales (a la DDDs 20% off and Kino sales). And stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video have some nice deals as well.
I count re-releases as new releases, that is if I buy them.
I don't buy too many recent releases.
The ones that come to mind in the past few months:
Cache
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Jesus is Magic
Munich

That's it. 5 new release dvds in about 2 or 3 months.
While I've bought maybe 40 more old or re-release dvds in the past 3 months.

It's not very proportional - but there aren't that many great new films coming out nowadays, so you can see where the numbers are coming from.

Three Burials has been one of my favorite purchases this year... lacks extras, but just a great movie none the less... also, Equinox's presentation was great.
however I got to say I am most thankful for Cemetery Man's release, finally...
