View Full Version : Great images in movies
So many topics about great quotes, what about the movies raison d etre, images.
Here are some of my favourites in no order.
Citizen Kane
The reveal of Rosebud
King Kong ('33)
Kong atop the Empire State building
Frankenstein ('31)
The whole sequence of bringing the monster to life.
Raging Bull
The blood dripping off the ropes as Jake is taking a beating
Taxi Driver
Sport and Iris dancing together
The Last Picture Show
The shot that opens and closes the film. A long pan through a deserted town.
Say Anything
Lloyd holding a radio above his head, as In Your Eyes plays.
Magnolia
Claudia's smile, in the last seconds of the film.
There are so many more, but I'll leave it at that for now

When I saw the topic of this thread one image immediately came to me: the famous still shot in the end of The 400 Blows where Antoine (JP Léaud) is standing on the beach looking straight into the camera with an ambiguous expression on his face.

In The Sandlot, when the 9 of them take their picture. Man, being a little kid kicked ass. And in Lord of the Rings, when you see the first shot of the army of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. A truly epic shot. Braveheart; Wallaces sword sticking out of the ground. And Waterboy; the Fonzies ass cheeks.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - In the Desert after Indy has found the well of the souls. The diggers and Indy are silhoutted against a setting sun while Indy puts his Fedora back on his head.
Jurassic Park - Feeling the Awe that the characters feel out in the middle of the field in the jeeps when they see the dinos for the first time.
These are two of my favorites

One of my very first memories of a movie is in Full Metal Jacket when the kid blows his brains out in the bathroom. Another is the walking hammers in The Wall. I also like the blood on the wall in the church in Children of the Corn that says "AND A CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM".

Colin, didn't you just give the ending away there?
The scene in Star Wars where Luke looks out to the twin suns was beautiful, as was the scene in Jurassic Park where the T-Rex triumphantly roars while a When-Dinosaurs-Ruled-The-Earth banner floats to the floor.

I totally agree, I also think the one from The Rock where Nic Cage is holding the flares up as the fighter planes are about to blast Alcatraz is a great image.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS
In Spider-Man: When the Goblin drops MJ and the cable car and they are reflected in the lenses of Spidey's mask
The whole sequence of designing the costume, because it feels just like a comic book.
In The Truman Show: Truman finds the stairs and leaves the studio.
In Almost Famous: Penny Lane's hand on the window of the plane, and William running past as it leaves. A great image as he appears to run through her fingers.
In Carrie: Carrie covered in blood, just before exacting her revenge.

For images. The first and last image in Julia (they're the same). It's a person in a boat fishing. The frame is perfectly set and is in two-tone color. It's beautiful.
In Pollock, where a silhouetted Pollock is crouching in a field playing with some grass, the sun has just set, making the backround a orangish color.
In Badlands, the car is driving off in a desert-like field towards the horizon, with dust flying from the ground. The horizon is a straight line. The sky is blue and the ground is a dull brown.
Any frame is Ju Dou.
For scenes, my favorite is probably the tree-top fighting scene in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Mortal Kombat, Opening sequence. Man I love that. I still consider it the Best opening titles to a movie.
TF:TM-"Megatron must be stopped, No matter the cost" and "Arise Rodimus Prime". Very memorable.
Stigmata-When she beats up on gabriel burne and gets crussified. Very beautiful scene.
Also, the end with the fire. If you haven't seen this movie, GO RENT IT!!!
Also, the under-rated The Iron Giant. Very memorable movie, especially the very end.

Shot of the cowboy riding the bomb at the end of Dr. Strangelove.

The Return Of The Jedi
I'm writing this off of my memory.
When Luke is chasing Darth Vader in his spaceship and after him are two X-Wings...then Han Solo comes out of the blue and starts shooting at the X-Wings.
Note: I'm not sure if the scene I described was exact but it did happen. My English teacher once said that this very scene when "The Return Of The Jedi" came out, was the SW fans' favorite, because everyone thought Han Solo was dead, and they stood up and were standing till the end of the movie!
WOW! now that's FANS!!!

???
I'm confused, because Han Solo didn't actually participate in any space battles in ROTJ and the X-Wings were on Solo/Luke's side.
I'm guessing you are either referring to the time in A New Hope when Solo came out of nowhere and took out the TIE's that were trying to kill Luke, OR you are referring to the scene in ROTJ when Lando (in the Falcon) shot down the TIEs chasing Wedge, but I'm not sure...

I'd agree with Aspiring Filmmaker's list (I'm an aspiring filmmaker too) and I'd add the following...
The ambulance tip (we're inside, tipping with it) in Magnolia.
The ice cream truck tip in Three Kings.
The overhead shot of Haley Joel Osemont at the bottom of the pool in A.I.: Artificial Intelligence.
The overhead shot of Rufus Sewell in the bathtub with the light swinging above him in Dark City.
The shot in The Crow where they're fighting on the rooftop of the cathedral at the end and lightning flashes, showing Brandon Lee looking very pissed off (I guess there's a few shots that in the scene, but they're all cool).
And I swear that I didn't mean to have each example above relate to one another. lol. It just came to me that way.

*************Possible Spoilers for Donnie Darko*************
After finally seeing it, I'd have to add the ending to Donnie Darko. Rose Darko (Mary McDonnell) is leaning up against a tree, devastated. Accompanying the shot is the song Mad World.
Lyric:
I find it kind of funny.
I find it kind of sad.
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had.
It's a...Mad world.
I'm not one to choke up at movies, but I damn near dropped a tear at this point.
