Universal Pictures has acquired the spec script Dracula Year Zero by new screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and set it up with Michael De Luca to produce via his De Luca Productions, says Variety.

The story explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler, depicting Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.

Alissa Phillips of De Luca Productions, who brought the project in, will serve as co-producer. Donna Langley, president of production, and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum will oversee the project.

I look forward to this, I know all the history and mythology of Vlad the Impaler and Dracula. I want to see how accurate and creative they get.

We have already this - its called Bram's Stoker's Dracula. 8.5/10

I doubt the greatness of Coppola's version can be matched, but I'm always down for a Drac flick.

True, but that movie only showed a small part of Dracula's origins. This film will show the whole thing. Meh, could be alright. I've never been one for vampire flicks, but I did like Coppola's.

Yawn. Coppola's version of the Dracula story had enough back story in it to keep this fan of history satisfied. I don't need an entire film to tell me what Coppola managed to sum up quite nicely in the opening moments of his film. This is just another excuse for a gorefest disguised as a clever idea.
