I've had my own issues with some of these guys' reviews in the past, but I think that the fact that both reviews are unequivocally positive and in context (both talk about their issues with Mann's previous work, some of which they liked, some of which they didn't) really counts for a lot. It's nice to see some positive press after the attempted hatchet jobs by Fox.

Beware, if you've seen Mann's previous films there are some SPOILERS in the reviews linked below.

Univeral is doing daily screening for critics from now until Vice opens. This is a great sign and I'm glad that Universal is going on the offensive finally - They've been bending over for these far-fetched irrelevent rumors far too long --- I knew it was out of hand when I read the FOX News article rehashing the old "Farrell has man boobs" crap --- Anyone who's seen the stills from the movie knows he looks diesel as hell.

Universal has confirmed the budget only went $15 mill over, putting it at a total of $135, which, while larger than any Mann flick before, is not totally insane -- http://eurweb.com/story/eur27372.cfm

Apparently Universal Chairman Marc Shmuger directly called the NY Daily News to set things right regarding their Page 6 shit.

Like I've said before, I'm only hyped about the film and hoping that it is good. I don't know for sure, but hearing these pre-release bad buzz rumors - it's just lameness happening.

Lameness happening right now.

Not anymore. I hope Universal comes out on top with this one. Like I've said all over the place - I've literally wanted this movie for 2 decades. I've never been able to watch a Mann film without asking when and if he would ever get around to doing Vice.

And now just a matter of days.

I didn't think there was any serious notion that Michael Mann would make a terrible movie, let alone one with source material he is so close to.

Yeah, these positive official reviews really make the naysayers whose drivel was published by Fox and AICN look like chumps.

I think Universal made a wise move until waiting after POTC2 juggernaut peaked before hitting us with serious advertising and other media. Vice is the only serious summer flick left this summer. Wells made a point of mentioning that he'd be seeing it another couple of times.

I think more serious movie-goers saw through the early reports - the stuff released by FOX was just absurd - rumors and hear-say, but the first AICN review --- I mean, the guy thought he was seeing Snakes On A Plane when told he was seeing a big Summer movie. Don't get me wrong - nothing bad about wanting to see Snakes; I want to see it, but from what I understand, there were posters all around for Vice. He criticized Vice for not having any drug use in it.

No doubt that people aren't worried about Mann's track record. I just can't figure where all this negative buzz - or to say, why all of this negative buzz started. It's just strange. I'm glad Universal is on the offensive now. That's a good point about it being smart for them to wait until the POTC thing happened. They are playing it pretty cool.

Yes , there was an article in page six regarding all of the rumors concerning the so called out of control production budget and dissention within the ranks . From what i remember , it was countered with , when you make a film with Mann , he likes to get it right , he's obsessive with getting his vision of what he imagined on to the movie screen , and sometimes that alienates people . Their were arguments , yes , there def was , but it's what happens when creative and talented people attempt to collaborate on an enormous project , one in which they are passionate about . Yes , the budget may have run a bit higher than we planned , but sometimes it's unavoidable if you have confidence it's to fashion the best product possible for the consumer , and to reflect the artistic vision of the director , once that balance is fused , the final product will find it's audience .

Okay , so i paraphrased just about the entire article , but i will report i did read an article in the Daily News about how Miami Vice is a labor of love of sorts , and that people , prob some rivals, are spreading rumors about how disastrous the production is / was .

I thought it looked good since the first time i saw the trailer with the Jay Z music , maybe it was the song , maybe it was the straight faced bravado , but it does look good , and yes , i doubt Mann would abuse his own baby , this is his legacy . Not saying i will be there opening day , but i def want to see this thing .

I already like one of the quotes that i cant really understand what they are saying .

Do you understand the meaning of verbotem , it means bad things are happening right now :D . And i'm not just talking about my spelling .

Another rave review, this one from AICN's Moriarty.

C'mon this movie's going to rock - every new TV spot I see of it looks better than the one before. I can't wait to see this thing. I'm even going to watch Last of the Mohicans, Heat and Collateral to prep for it. :D

Just read Moriarty's review. Sounds damn good, i'll be looking forward to more Mann in a few weeks.

One encouraging thing, coming from Moriarty - I've had issues with some of his reviews in the past, but he knows his films and he hasn't been a Mann quisling in the past - he makes a point of saying Mann is raising th bar here. Many verteran directors in recent years have sort of slipping into a bit of a rut; that doesn't seem to be the case here.

The quote is "Do you understand of the word foreboding? As in badness is happening right now."

I know people who have seen Heat 3 or 4 times who still don't understand what Jon Voight is saying.;)

It was only when I got the DVD years after the film was released and got the captions did I know he says "Funny as a heart attack" when DeNiro laughs.

Emanuel Levy has given it a B+ .

Let's just link up the rottentomatoes page and see how it ends up -

I read an article saying Mann hired local gang members to provide security in South America - very rock and roll.

Bubba, I feel it's up to you and me to single-handedly defend this movie and then beam like a paedophile in kiddy-heaven when everyone starts raving about this film!!!!

BubbaStrangelove

We don't need to defend this film. I'm hoping it'll hold its own.

Another positive review, even though the reviewer spends more time talking about comically helping Rex Reed who was stuck between some chairs - LOL

One line about Vice delivering, and the rest about an old critic being trapped in a theater. Pretty funny.

If people want to check out the HBO 'First Look' episode on the film, they can do so here:

I couldn't watch the 10 new clips (joblo's main page) because I'm getting too worried about having to much given away.

However, I did watch the HBO inside look - Holy shit, Michael Mann is The Man!

The whole thing about them "punking" Colin Farrell by taking him on a set-up undercover operationg was fantastic. Every movie Mann does he tops his techniques in preparing actors. Collateral it was the Tom Cruise/UPS thing, and now we have him sending Farrell in with real-life undercover agents for a staged operation - without Farrell knowing that it wasn't legit.

I got a kick out of the undercover agent noting how fast Farrell was able to check the amounts on the coke - haha - Party Man Farrell!

Also very cool that they used Homeland Security agents in some of the bodyguard roles.

Another positive review -

With a summer mostly dominated by superhero films, comedies, kids films and pirates, it was definitely a relief to finally see a film for the grown ups. (http://www.moviemansguide.com/reviews/movie/read.php?id=miamivice)

reel.com just gave it a 3/4 - full review not yet available because of site maintenance.

Since they've had the premiere, we should see where it's going critically after this weekend.

So far, 6 out of 6 positive reviews.

One more good review -

http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117931152?categoryid=1263&cs=1

And one bad one - "Taking advantage of the larger canvas, Mann expands the scenario to include stops in Uruguay, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic (which doubles for Haiti), but for all the cosmopolitan intrigue, "Miami Vice" just doesn't go anywhere interesting."
