The only film I thought was great of Verhoeven's was Total Recall. To me he isn't a top director like others claim he is, but that's jmo. I still think the only movie he's done that's anything special is Total Recall though, and that's probably not one of my 3 fav. Arnie flick either.

I think Verhoeven is a great director...and a very enthusiastic director. Anyone who has seen behind the scenes stuff of his films, you know that he get's down and dirty to get things right. I personally think he makes really enjoyable films. The reason why they are so enjoyable is because I think they are really over-the-top and creative. I loved "Total Recall", "Robocop", and "Hollow Man". But, sorry Paul, all the boobies in the world couldn't make a "Showgirls" a good film.

At best, he's a good craftsman, but his excesses really turn me off at times. Look at Total Recall. It had a terrific storyline, but what was the point of all that gore?
My ratings:
ROBOCOP = 6/10
TOTAL RECALL = 6/10
BASIC INSTINCT = 6/10
SHOWGIRLS = 2/10
STARSHIP TROOPERS = 5/10
HOLLOW MAN = 5/10

I hate Paul Verhoeven. He's only made one film that I'm able to watch several times, Basic Instinct. He absolutely has to add a lot of unnecessary gore and violence, and for crying out loud, nudity in every single film. Nothing wrong with nudity, but in his films you can almost hear the man drooling behind the camera...
My ratings for his films :
RoboCop - 5/10
Total Recall - 3/10
Basic Instinct - 7/10
Showgirls - 2/10
Starship Troopers - 4/10
Hollow Man - 4/10

I just watched Starship Troopers for a second time and it was very corny, very violent and had surprisingly good F/X for a movie that came out in, what, '97? '98?
Starship Troopers (6/10)
Total Recall (8/10)
Robocop (7/10)
Hollow Man (7/10)
Those are the movies I've seen of his. He sure loves sick violence though.

Verhoeven is awesome. Some of his movies suck becuase they got weak scripts and terrible actors. (never work with Joe Eszterhas or Casper Van Dien again). But his style always brings up his films.

I agree, he is an awesome director after I saw Total Recall. He is also a very underrated director.

Speaking of underrated, STARSHIP TROOPERS is an underrated flick. On first viewing I thought it was quite the little entertainer.

verhoeven and hollywood do make for a refreshing cocktail when the script's good (robocop, basic instinct, starship troopers)... BUT
i do prefer him in his old pre-hollywood days:
"the fourth man" is one of my favorite movies... well i love starship troopers as well :-)
