Next weekend should be pretty interesting as the anticipated Panic Room opens. I think many people are underestimating it though. It seems like a lot of people are looking forward to it, so it might be able to make over $25 million.

Might seem a big estimation but I think it should be able to make a lot of money.
2. Ice Age- $20.0
3. Blade 2- $19.0
4. Death to Smoochy- $14.0
5. E.T. Reissue- $10.5
6. The Rookie- $10.0
7. Clockstoppers- $8.0
8. Showtime- $5.0
9. We Were Soldiers- $4.0

I'm with you Strider in that I think that Panic Room is going to do just as well as Blade 2 did this past weekend. Also, I think we shouldn't count out word of mouth on Sorority Boys bumping up the number next weekend...it faced tough competition this past weekend from Blade 2 but it is really funny and I think that those who saw it are going to have an effect on next weekend's numbers.
Also, I think we shouldn't count out word of mouth on Sorority Boys bumping up the number next weekend...it faced tough competition this past weekend...
Keep wishing, snootch. In order for word of mouth to work, you have to have plenty of mouths to spread the word. With a paltry $4.2 million, this one's D.O.A.. It's also going to start losing screens next weekend with the arrival of 3 new movies.
The Other
03-25-2002, 04:34 PM
At least you are all predicting a boost in ticket sales for A BEAUTIFUL MIND and all because of its 4 (should be 5) Oscar wins including Best Picture(!!!).
I hope PANIC ROOM does good, if it's a good movie. I really hope it is. I'm going to see it this weekend.

I've been hiding under a rock. LOTR is still playing here in LA. When does The Two Tower's Trailer start? this friday?!?! I'm wary of spoilers on this movie so I don't read much on it yet. But a trailer... man I'm looking forward to that.

Ideal's Predictions
**Guys Don't Forget That It's EASTER Weekend!!!! No School on Friday or Monday for the kiddies, which means that films like Ice Age and ET will hold up very well!
1.The Panic Room $25.5 million
2.Ice Age $25.0 million
3.Clockstoppers $15.3 million
4.Blade 2 $14.5 million
5.E.T $13.7 million
6.The Rookie $11.1 million
7.Death To Smoochy $9.7 million
8.Showtime $7.3 million
9.A Beautiful Mind $6.5 million
10.We Were Soldiers $4.9 million
11.Lord Of The Rings $4.5 million
12.Resident Evil $4.0 million
13.The Time Machine $3.9 million
Let me start with the estimated screen count:PANIC ROOM(3000), CLOCKSTOPPERS(2500), THE ROOKIE(2400), DEATH TO SMOOCHY(1800). Why the low screen count for SMOOCHY? My feeling is that both Warner Bros. and theater owners are not confident enough in the product. Easter weekend should benefit PG and PG-13 movies the most. They're the kind families can go to see together. With that in mind, I see ICE AGE, E.T., THE ROOKIE and SHOWTIME getting a holiday boost. Adult singles and couples will flock to PANIC ROOM. It should open strongly but I'm not sure its' going to be #1. I see ICE AGE reclaiming the #1 spot. Even though BLADE 2 opened as strongly as it did, I still consider its $33 million a slight disappoinment. It had the potential to make $10 million more. I predict it would drop by at least 50% in its second lap. I don't see many people wasting their time on CLOCKSTOPPERS. THE ROOKIE could be the sleeper hit. But can it overcome the box-office curse of Dennis Quaid? Here are my initial predictions.
1. ICE AGE- $29 million
2. PANIC ROOM - $27 million
3. BLADE II - $18 million
4. E.T. - $13 million
5. THE ROOKIE - $8 million
6. DEATH TO SMOOCHY - $7.5 million
7. SHOWTIME - $6.5 million
9. A BEAUTIFUL MIND - $6.2 million
10. CLOCKSTOPPERS - $5.5 million
I've been hiding under a rock. LOTR is still playing here in LA. When does The Two Tower's Trailer start? this friday?!?! I'm wary of spoilers on this movie so I don't read much on it yet. But a trailer... man I'm looking forward to that.
thats why this movie will make more than 4 million dollars this weekend... im going again... and a few other people who arent really interested are going again... this should boost it past HP for the top box office

For some reason, I believe that Clcokstoppers is going to do pretty good business at the Box Office. It appeals to kids and pre-teens, as well as the fact that the trailers are pretty darn cool!

While I think ABM will benefit more from the Oscars it won, I also think that the TTT trailer being released with FotR will about even out the race...and if New Line can really up FotR's theater count to around 2,000, I don't know, I could see it pulling in $6 million or so this weekend...mehopes it'll be higher, but we'll see http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Personally, I don't like the fact that the film is opening into more theaters again. I think that Harry Potter beat the movie fair and square at the box-office, however not Lord of the Rings will probably beat it. In my opinion, Harry Potter was the better film and deserves to be the top film of the year. However, I know that a lot of you disagree with me.

Come on guys lets not turn this topic into another LOTR Vs. HP thing. Everyone has a right ot their opinion. Anyways why does one film have to be better. LOTR and HP both have pros and cons. Now lets just stay on topic and predict the box office.
MY PREDICTIONS:
1. ICE AGE - 26 MILLION
2. PANIC ROOM - 25 MILLION
3. BLADE 2 - 16 MILLION
4. CLOCKSTOPPERS - 14 MILLION
5. THE ROOKIE - 13 MILLION
6. E.T. - 11.2 MILLION
7. A BEAUTIFUL MIND - 8.3 MILLION
8. DEATH TO SMOOCHY - 6-7 MILLION (I love dark comedies but this movie looks so horrible it's not even funny. It will bomb terribly at the Box Office. It will be lucky if it finishes it's theatrical run with 15 Million. Dark comedies that look good are tough enough to sell, so imagine how hard it would be to sell one that looks completely horrible. I think it will make around 6 Million this weekend, 7 Million at the most.)
9. RESIDENT EVIL - 4.9 MILLION
10. LORD OF THE RINGS - 4.5 MILLION
11. SHOWTIME - 4.4 MILLION
12. WE WERE SOLDIERS - 4.3 MILLION
13. MONSTERS BALL - 2.6 MILLION
14. SORORITY BOYS - 2.4 MILLION
15. GOSFORD PARK - 2.3 MILLION
16. IN THE BEDROOM - 1.9 MILLION
17. 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS - 1.7 MILLION
18. JOHN Q - 1.5 MILLION
19. ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS - 1.1 MILLION
20. KISSING JESSICA STEIN - 0.9 Million (this is more of a wish than what I actually think, but who knows, it could happen. It is adding more theaters.)

Well, between the wider release, the TTT trailer and the fact that some people who thought they weren't into LOTR saw clips on the Oscars that made it look extra cool - definitly expect to see this one shoot up again.

I'm never any good at predicting total weekend box office numbers but I do think that Panic Room will do as well or better than Blade 2 did last weekend. Also think that Rookie will pull the families in and will probably make upwards of $20M. I'm going to see both so I'll be doing my part http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Blade 2- Although this was a great film I still smell a 40% drop to about 19.8 million. I just think that a lot of fans saw it opening weekend and thats it. But it won't be as bad as RE's drop because some will come see it again and some will come who avoided opening weekend crowds.
E.T.- This movie did not open huge but it will hang on. I predict a 20% drop to about 13 million. This movie will endure because families usually are not known for rushing out on opening weekend.
Sorority Boys- This movie will drop 60% and be way out of the top ten. It just did not catch its audience much like SLACKERS. Although I'll see it tommorow.
Panic Room- I think this movie will do average and get about a 21 million opening. It should atteact adults.
Death To Smoochy- This movie will get about 6 million and drop quick due to people hating "dark comedies". I just don't see it attracting many people. Although I'll see it again.
The Rookie- This movie was great and with the previews on The Disney Channel it will open big. I see it topping the box office with about 29 million.
Clockstoppers- This film will get a great 28 million opening with a lot of sold-out shows due to the fact that Nickleodeon is drowning its popular children network with trailers full of cool F/X and action.
And with "LOTR: FOTR" coming back I predict a 7 million opening.

I don't understand your comment. LOTR is not playing a "dirty" game by expanding theatres. If there are people who want to see the film, then there are people who want to see the film. Simple as that. HP opened in thousands of more screens than LOTR, and then dropped faster. LOTR on the other hand opened in less screens, but has had better legs. Right now many people are not able to see the film, because of lack of screens. After the expansion this won't be a problem.
Anyway, I predict 4-6 million for LOTR.

First of all, I never said Lord of the Rings was playing "a dirty game." Also, it didn't open in thousands less theaters than Harry Potter did. Harry Potter maxed in 3,672 theaters and Lord of the Rings played in 3,381. That isn't a huge difference. Anyway, I just wanted to clarify.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your "I think that Harry Potter beat the movie fair and square at the box-office" quote.
Anyway, I was talking about SCREENS, not theatres. HP opened in close to 8000 screens, where as LOTR had around 5000 screens. I don't know how many screens american multiplexes can have at most, but I have understood they can have around 5-7 screens a theatre.

4. Blade 2: 27.8
5. E.T.: 21.0

7. Death to Smoochey: 19.0
8. A Beautiful Mind: 10.0
9. Lord of the Rings: 6.8
10. Resident Evil: 5.8
lil kids are out of school and ice age will be panic rooms toughest contender instead of blade 2

That's okay. I know what you are talking about, it's just that I liked Harry Potter better and was rooting for it to win the 2001 box-office race. Anyway, it'll win overseas probably so it doesn't really matter that much.
