I'm metal. My favorite bands include, but are not limited to, Opeth, Cannibal Corpse, Death, Control Denied, Suffocation, Pharaoh, Into Eternity, and casketloads more.
I won't be too specific here, but if you're a metalhead, you might want to click something below this post. It's a button that has three letters on it. It's one letter repeated three times.
Okay, I'll shut up now.

Man I love so much metal from so many genres it's not even funny. I'm not even going to bother to put them into sub genres, I'm just going to list most of them:
Arch Enemy, As I Lay Dying, Avenged Sevenfold, Ayreon, Between the Buried and Me, The Black Dahlia Murder, Black Label Society, Black Sabbath, Children of Bodom, Chimaira, Death, Devildriver, Devin Townsend Band, Dimmu Borgir, Disturbed, Dope, Dragonforce, Dream Theater, Drowning Pool, Edguy, Fear Factory, Fimbulwinter, Fozzy, God Forbid, Godsmack, The Haunted, Iced Earth, Ill Nino, In Flames, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Killswitch Engage, Korn, Kreator, Lacuna Coil, Lamb of God, Megadeth, Metallica, Mudvayne, Murderdolls, Mushroomhead, Opeth, Powerman 5000, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Saliva, Seether, Sepultura, Serpent Underground, Sevendust, Shadows Fall, Slayer, Sonata Arctica, Stone Sour, Strapping Young Lad, Stratovarious, System of a Down, Symphony X, Tool, Type O Negative, The Union Underground, Velvet Revolver.
Some of these bands are hard rock and/or Nu-Metal but since the line between hard rock and light metal is very thin I included them anyway.
This is just off the top of my head, there are more that I probably didn't think about.

Ugh. I can't stand hardcore.
I guess I'm not that hip, but I worked with a girl who kept talking about "Hardcore, Hardcore, Hardcore" all the time and I had no idea what she meant. Once I finally figured it out, I was like "So THAT'S the name of the music I can't stand!"
I prefer just straight up metal, power metal, industrial metal.
KMFDM, Pig, Iced Earth, Nightwish, Primal Fear, Blind Guardian, Judas Priest, Apocalyptica, Metallica, Megadeth, Athrax, Slayer, Grip inc, Gamma Ray, Kamelot, Rammstein, Megaherz, Dokken, Sister Machine Gun, Fear Factory, Bile, etc, etc.

I'm into almost anything "metal".
A good concert coming up is the Gigantour 2006. It has some of my fave bands on it:Megadeth, Arch Enemy, and Overkill. Lamb of God and Opeth will also be on it, but I'm not into them.
My favorie metal album of the year so far is Ministry's Rio Grande Blood. But new Gwar, Slayer and Asesnio come out next month so I'll have to see if it still stands.

Did someone put Velvet Revolver as Metal? OK.........
One of the best metal shows out there is Soulfly! They are very tight live and Max Cavalera has an awesome metal voice!
Saw Slayer live with Hatebreed.......was disappointed. Hatebreed live is horrible compared to their cds. Much like the Deftones. Slayer wasn't good at all.....but maybe it was the sound that sucked.
Pantera was another awesome show...but that is no more. Superjoint Ritual is a good band...not sure how they are live?

Thankfully, hardcore isn't considered a part of metal, but then again, most "tr00" metalheads would tell you that Disturbed and Mudvayne are "nu-metal" (I fucking hate the term)... Regardless, thank you for having taste.;)

That's actually Metalcore. It's kind of confusing at first, but let me explain: metalcore is a genre that has become popular latly. It is a fusion genre, which fuses Hardcore and Metal influences together into one musical form. Bands like Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, God Forbid and Lamb of God have been labeled the "New Wave of American Heavy Metal" because they have become the current pioneers of this genre and it is the first time America has put it's stamp on Metal since Thrash back in the 80's and early 90's.
The bands you mention are popular, yes, but they are actually much different from the pioneers I mention. Try taking a listen to the bands I mentioned- They're more Metal than they are Hardcore anyway.

Early Manson was metal. Portrait of an American Family and Antichrist Superstar are some really good heavy albums. I would consider him more industrial, but those lines are pretty blurred. But think early on in his career he was metal.

Hardcore, metalcore, emocore... it's all the same to me.
9 times out of 10 I prefer actual singing to screaming, as well as a real melody rather than mindless thrashing. Oh, and songs over three minutes long.
And Metallica is still metal. Marylin Manson is still metal. To me, everything is metal first, subgenre second. Manson may be more industrial now, but he's still metal. And better than ever in my opinion. And St. Anger rubbed me the wrong way at first, but I gave it more listens and it really grew on me. It's rediculously heavy. Unconventional? - yes. Metal? - very much.
Personaly, I think Metallica's first two albums are highly overrated and I don't even like them anymore. Puppets, Justice, and Black Album makes a great trilogy of sorts. But for my money, they were never more polished and fined tuned than during the Load/Reload era. I absolutely loved that sound.

Reload is pretty uneven, but there are some real killer songs on there. Fixxxer is increadible. Aditude absolutely rocks and is my favorite track there. Prince Charming, Bad Seed, and Devil's Dance are good. Was never a big fan of Fuel, but it sure gets a lot of radio play.
Carpe Diem Baby, Low Man's Lyric, and Where the Wild Things Are get the skip button.

The more and more I listen to Dillinger Escape Plan, the more I love them. Great music, great energy. Supposedly their live shows are nothing short of brilliant. About 10 months ago Trent Reznor saw them live and told everyone to go see them. A lot of his fans asked him if he would get them to open for NIN on tour. His resonse, "There is no way I would come out after them." That's quite the compliment.
Has anyone here seen them live? I'd love to know what you guys think of them.

Does anyone like A Life Once Lost? I love their album "Hunter" but after I lost my first copy I couldn't remember why I liked it that much and then I saw them at Ozzfest Saturday and instantly went to pick up their CD. Great band, great live show. Plus, I recommend any Lamb of God fans pick it up for Randy's guest vocals on "Vulture".

For old times sakes, My recent playlist:
Strapping Young Lad - The New Black 9/10. This just totally destroyes. DONT YOU FUCK WITH METAL! \m/
The Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra 9/10. Hevy Devy never fails, and DTB's new shit rocks.
Darkthrone - The Cult Is Alive 9/10. Indeed, the Cult is fucking alive! Darkthrone may have thrown in some punk into this one, but it's still Darkthrone, and they will always rule.
Burzum - Det Som Engang Var 10/10. Classic, mandatory black metal from the master Varg.
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse 10/10. See Burzum.
DragonForce - Inhuman Rampage 10/10. Sue me, or call them gay but but I love DF. Incredible musicanship here, and the melodies get stuck in my head for days.

I think this may be one of their best albums. At least neck and neck with City.

I recently picked up the new GRAVE cd. Its pretty cool. Reminds of Death Spiritiula Healing and Entombed Left Hand Path. Though its not as good as either of those records. It does have a nice version of the Alice in Chains hit "Them Bones".
The new Slayer is pretty good. Better than God Hates Us All, but not as good as the "classic" stuff. The lyrics have alot to do with Satan so they come off as cheesy sometimes. The music kicks hard though.

Agreed. City was incredible. Alien was just totally insane. I heard Devin stopped taking his biploar meds when he was writing Alien. I can totally believe that. Just read the lyrics to "Shitstorm".

You are correct, sir. Which is why "The New Black" sounds so calm and laid-back (in a good way) compared to "Alien".
Also, I sometimes feel like I'm the only one who likes Hatebreed (well, the only person I know of personally, the people who were there at Ozzfest seemed to love them as much as me), am I right in my feeling of loneliness? I can't see why more people don't dig on their "brutal, but uplifting" style.

I just hate their style of music. It's so generic and watered down to me. I hate all the bands that play that style (Bury Your Dead, Throwdown, Sinai Beach, Terror, Madball, etc...)

Hatebreed are actually one of the few modern hardcore bands I like. These days, hardcore is so far up it's own ass it's not even funny. It's not about the music anymore. Now, it's all about who's in what crew, who is toughter, bla bla bla. It's just as bad as rap. Old school hardcore is where it's at. Black Flag, Agnostic Front, ect...

Converge is my favorite modern hardcore band. The most intense live show I've ever been too as well. Damn, the intensity of the albums totally matches the live show.
Also, the new Mastodon album has leaked and I'm listening to it. I'm on the fourth or so song right now and don't worry they still fucking rule despite being on a major label. Easily, one of the top metal albums of the year so far unless the rest of the album is horrible.

True. As far as integrity goes, they've got it. Another song that expresses it is "Live For This".

Meh, I used to live on LoG. New American Gospel is still a damn good album, but then they went to shit. Their next two cd's sound exactly alike with every two song and what I've heard of Sacrament is even worst. Redneck is a horrible horrible song. If you want to ape Pantera's sound, that's fine. But, if you want to ape Pantera's sound from their last album that's just horrible.

New American Gospel is my fav LoG album. That and Burn the Priest. I liked Palaces, but Ashes sounded way to rushed. I like "Redneck" and the guys took their time on this one, so I'm hoping it'll be good. With Redneck, they tried something different. See if the whole album is like that.
Speaking of trying something differnt, Satyricon's "Now, Diabolical" is a pretty sweet album. I like the direction they're going, despite some hardcores bitching about it. Their earlier black metal still is their best shit, but I liked the last 2 albums.

I definately agree that "Now, Diabolical" is a good album. I've been listening to it and "Volcano" repeatedly lately.
But I still refuse to budge on the new Lamb of God. The sound is pretty much Randy trying to force Phil's "Reinventing the Steel"-era vocals into the LoG sound. And that's pretty much the entire album.:(
At least Stone Sour's "Come What(ever) May" (not metal, but still a great album), Mastodon's "Blood Mountain", and Hatebreed's "Supremacy" have made up for it. Plus Jamey Jasta's new project, Icepick, is pretty damn good. Not even Ice-T was able to ruin it.:p

2006 is half-over, what do you think are the best releases so far? My list (no way are these in order):
Darkthrone - The Cult Is Alive
Slayer - Christ Illusion
Gorgoroth - Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam (fucking GREAT album. terribly underrated BM band)
Strapping Young Lad - The New Black
The Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra
Ihsahn - The Adversary
Cannibal Corpse - Kill

They're also affected by the curse of Christian music: They suck hardcore. The new Zao is one of the worst hardcore albums of the year.
And my best 2006 releases:
In no order:
Sepultura - "Dante XXI" (my favorite metal album of the year, hands down)
Stone Sour - "Come What(ever) May"
Hatebreed - "Supremacy"
Ihsahn - "The Adversary" (funny, because I can't stand Emperor)
Strapping Young Lad - "The New Black"
The Devin Townsend Band - "Synchestra" (even though it's not even half the album "Accelerated Evolution" was, it's still great)
In Flames - "Come Clarity"
Ephel Duath - "Pain Necessary to Know"
I'll propably be adding Mastodon's "Blood Mountain" to that list, but I'll wait till it comes out...

On second listen I like it a lot more than I did the first time I heard it. The lyrics are fucking horrid, but damn the music is good. Nothing close to Hell Awaits, Reign In Blood, Seasons, or South Of Heaven but on the level on Divine Intervention as a decent Slayer album. Way better than Diabolus and GHUA. I'll push my rating to it up to a 7/10. My favorite tracks are probably Flesh Storm, Jihad, Skeleton Christ, and Consfearacy (Man, I hate that song title.).
My Top albums in no order would be
Slayer - Christ Illusion - 7/10
Mastodon - Blood Mountain - 9/10
Strapping Young Lad - The New Black - 9/10
The Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra - 7.5/10
Dragonforce - Inhuman Rampage - 7/10
The Sword - Age Of Winters - 8/10
Amorphis - Eclipse - 7/10
Ihsahn - Adversary - 7/10
Boris - Pink - 9/10 (2005 or not, I think it was released here in early January.)

I have no idea who the hell Jamey Jasta is and have never heard of Icepick. But I love Ice-T so I'll have to check it out.
But, yeah, I liked Now, Diabolical. Satyricon may be selling out, but at least they're still writing good songs IMO. Let's just hope it lasts.
On a related note, The Cult Is Alive isn't that great. It's still a reasonably solid album by one of my favorite bands, but it simply lacks the excitement for me that I get from listening to their other albums. I like even Plaguewielder more.
The biggest surprise for me so far this year is how kickass the new Deicide album, The Stench of Redemption is. The Hoffman brothers are out and the new guitarists they got have filled the band with a new life and vigor. If you haven't liked Deicide in quite awhile, I heartily recommend this new one.
The latest Impaled Nazarene album is excellent, although I think I liked the last one, All That You Fear, a bit more.
The new GWAR, Beyond Hell shows the band still in the more straightforward metal phase they've been in since Violence Has Arrived. It kicks thrashy ass, but I do miss their more humor-laden ventures.

What do you not like about Emperor? All their works? While Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk is one of my top albums ever, I really didn't like Prometheus. I also wasn't overly crazy about Ihsahn and his wife's project Peccatum, so I had been avoiding his solo album. Hm... I haven't heard Peccatum, I tried downloading it, but could never find anybody that had it. It definately is better produced than any of Emperor's albums, already taking away from it's kvltness. The main thing I don't like about Emperor is the drumming. Never before has drumming so perfectly kept me from liking music. But then again, I'm not the biggest black metal fan, so that's understandable.
That video I linked is a good indication of where the album goes, it's pretty much all over the place, power metal, black metal, thrash, etc.

The new Deicide is pretty solid. When the Hoffman's left, I was very spectical, but Owen and the other dude (name escapes me at the moment) are a perfect fit. Owen ruled in Corpse and he rules in Deicide.

I finally heard Dimmu Borgir's re-recording of "Stormblast" after all this time. Well, for the most part, I think it was a fucking disaster. First of all, why would they want to fuck with their best release, second to "For All Tid"!? Second, if they HAD to re-record the entire album, taking off the original "Sorgens Kammer" was a big mistake. Truth be told, "Sorgens Kammer Del II" is one of the tracks I actually like on the album, but why take off the original track, which was one of the best on the original Stormblast album? Who gives a fuck if the original was a ripoff? You'd think by now the band has made enough money to pay the composer for the rights.
Dont get me wrong, I like Dimmu. I didnt accuse them of being sell-outs for changing their shit up. I've stuck behind some of my favorite bands when they changed it up and still delieverd the goods (Satyricon and Enslaved come to mind). I liked Death Cult Armegeddon, but the "new" Stormblast just seemed like a money scheme to me.

I have to add that now I've had a chance to finally listen to "Christ Illusion" a few times, I've got to hand it to Slayer. Quite a comeback. Not that I thought "God Hates Us All" was even a partially bad album, but five years is too long to wait :p
My favorite tracks are "Catalyst", "Jihad", "Catatonic", "Black Serenade", and "Cult".

Christ Illusion is one of the most boring metal albums I've heard in a long time. Selling out is one thing; progressing (the act of adding new elements to a pre-existing core sound) is another. Slayer stopped progressing with Seasons. CI is a fast thrash record. Big fucking deal. They're beating a dead horse. And a live horse. They're beating a dead horse and a live horse.

You recall to mind the time an interviewer (who was trying to tick him off) asked Angus Young what it was like to be in a band that had recorded the same album 12 times. Angus responded, "13 times." Some bands just aren't supposed to be progressing anywhere. The albums are there and you can either enjoy them or just not. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.:p But since I like all their albums, I'm guessing we're always gonna have different viewpoints, but I do repesct your opinion ;)

20 years ago the lyrics on Reign In Blood were shocking and controversial. Now, the Slayer lyrics on Christ Illusion come off as really lame and cheesy. Hell, cheesier than most Power Metal albums. I listened to it for a third time and I think I'm just going to give it a rating right in the middle of 5/10. Lombardo being back is a treat and some of the riffs are damn good, but main the lyrics are just horrible. Lyrics like these are why I'm not a big fan of bands like Deicide.
And I've been listening to all of Death's albums again. What an amazing band they were is all I have to say.

I think Satyricon's change in sound is a calculated effort to reach a broader audience, abandoning black metal in favor of a mid-paced thrash but keeping the same production sound they had with Rebel Extravaganza (what I consider to be their last black metal album).
I want everyone to know though, that I'm not slamming them. They don't have to be black metal for me to like them. I think they are writing great music in their current style, and I hope they continue to do so. I'm just pointing out that they are possibly on the path to becoming crap as their current style brings them more and more success, even if they are still great at the moment. I guess you could just say I was voicing a fear about their future. I hope I'm wrong, because they are one of the most enjoyable bands out there.

Some bands just aren't supposed to be progressing anywhere. The albums are there and you can either enjoy them or just not. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.:p But since I like all their albums, I'm guessing we're always gonna have different viewpoints, but I do repesct your opinion ;)
I agree with Angus. Many bands don't need to innovate. I don't need Slayer to show me a new and exciting style. New songs in their classic style makes me very happy. I do like to hear new things, but at the same time, I've never been one to complain about any band's new album sounding like a rehash of their masterpiece(s).
Mercyful Fate is my favorite band, and I love all of their albums, which have evolved over their career. However, I think they would still be my favorite band even if each album sounded exactly like Melissa.

Yeah, I'm somewhat worried that they might become shit. BUT, for now, they're not. Satyr and Frost havent stopped writing the good tunes.

Hell yes. It sounds like Maiden's gonna complete another trilogy of great albums. "Brave New World", "Dance of Death", and "A Matter of Life and Death" will be a nice companion trilogy to their last great set of albums "The Number of the Beast", "Piece of Mind", and "Powerslave".

Eh... in a way. Tearstained's first 3 albums were called the "depressive trilogy" or something like that. Meaning they had a very depressing sound, yet still had that raw BM feel. The new one is a totally pissed off (thats the way I'd put it) BM record. Needless to say, it's stil Tearstained, and if you liked Monumental then you should def check it out.

Everything about "Sacrament" is just taking Pantera and throwing it into the "Palaces"/"Ashes" LoG style. I like the album, but it isn't all that original or noteworthy, except for the ripping off of Pantera. And if you're referring to Pantera's power metal days I agree, but if you mean "Cowboys from Hell", I have to disagree, as that's a classic in my book.

When I first heard Redneck by Lamb Of God, I was just dreading this album. It actually suprised the hell out of me. It's actually pretty good save for Redneck and a few other Pantera moments here or there. The guitars sound more technical then on Ashes Of The Wake which is a very good thing. I just don't like Randy's vocals anymore. Better than the fake Phil on Redneck, but I miss the raw intensity he displayed on New American Gospel.

Yeah, there are some moments from Randy on "Sacrament" that just make me wanna hurl. I think it's the outro to "Forgotten (Lost Angels)" where they're repeating the chorus or something over and over and then Randy does background vocals that keep say "burn" and it sounds horrible. The rest of the band puts in a great performance, but Randy's just "meh." Does anyone else think it's odd that they gave up on political songs and this is the result?

I like them just about all equally. In fact, "CFH" has one that that "Vulgar" lacks: diversity. "Driven" has one or two out there slowed down tracks and "CFH" has the classic "Cemetary Gates", but "Vulgar" is just almost all thrashing. I like it, but it makes me want to stop listening to the album sooner. Regardless, all of Pantera's albums except for "Reinventing the Steel" are classics to me.

No, I like CFH better than both of those. VDoP is great too, but CFH just barely edges it out. Far Beyond Driven is just boring drivel as far as I'm concerned.
I like Great Southern Trendkill quite a bit as well.
I really think their first album with Phil, Power Metal, is a great underrated record. And all of their early albums are often unfairly lumped together with glam metal just because of their hair. The music is really more in the NWOBHM style.
Everybody who likes 2nd era Pantera should really listen to Exhorder - Slaughter In the Vatican. That album was the blueprint they used when they decided to "toughen up."

"Driven", to me, suffers from the same problem Meshuggah's "Nothing" gave me when I first listened to it: It's almost too heavy. It just bludgeons you into submission and doesn't let up. Now, after you've gotten used to it, it's a fucking great album, but the first few times, your ears just aren't ready for it.

The Great Southern Trendkill is their most underrated album, in my opinion. It should be ranked right alongide VDP and FBD, but for some reason, it's paired off with RTS. "Floods," "Suicide Note Pt. 2," and the title track are some of the best Pantera tunes ever. They didn't need hyper-technicality or hyper-speed to be badass.

That kicks ass man. Another good female extreme metal vocalist (Simone Simons isn't an extreme vocalist, just really fucking hot) is Laura Nichol of Light This City. They play melo-death in the vein of At the Gates and Black Dahlia Murder (although BDM is just another ATG clone). It's nothing new or original, but it still kicks ass. They have a new CD coming out in September.

I'll spare you my wrath for call BDM and ATG clone, as somehow I like BDM, but never got into ATG (they're good, I just don't like them), but I'll try some Light This City, I'll just warn you the other extreme vocalist I know is the girl from Walls of Jericho (don't know here name) and that band is pretty much horrid.

That they are. All of the hardcore kids who went to my high school (when I was still there) were like, "d00d! Walls of Jericho has a chick vocalist! they are t3h aw3som3!" Yeah. I pretty much fucking HATED that crowd. Oh, and I like BDM, but it's a pretty well known fact that their biggest influence is At the Gates.

Morbid Angel - Covenant 5/5
Shub Niggurath - The Black Goatlike Arise-demo 4/5

Municipal Waste - Hazardous Mutation 5/5
Danzig - Danzig 4 4/5
Slayer - Christ Illusion 4/5
Dezperadoz - The Legend and the Truth 2/5 (WTF! The first album by Desperados, Dawn of Dying, was a completely brilliant wild-west thrash album, featuring Tom Angelripper on vocals. Truly one of a kind. This new album, which I was so excited to discover, is probably the biggest let down I've had in a very long time. Angelripper's gone, replaced by average standard heavy metal vocals which do not fit the theme at all. The music itself is
well played, but many songs do not have a wild-west feel to them at all save for song intros and random sound samples. The few songs that do have a thematic sound to them are generally weak and the vocals have no grit or edge to them. The lyrics have the same theme as before, but other than that, this is quite simply just crap. The fact that they changed the s's in their name to z's should have been an indication that they turned completely fucking lame. If Angelripper were involved, it would've at least been halfway decent. Whereas the first album was completely unique sounding, this is generic mainstream metal with out of place
wild-west sounds dropped on top, without a care to incorporate them into the song writing.)

Cattle Decapitation are a band that I'm listening to right now. I like them a lot actually and I figured I would hate them. I really don't like the cheesy porno goregrind sound that I guess the first album had which I haven't heard. But I did listen to Humanure and their latest and their both really good and technical as hell.

Won't comment on Emperor, as most of you know they don't really agree with my ears, but I was really dissapointed with "The Fall of Ideals". Their last CD was pretty good, and this one was just "meh." And they were one of the least entertaining bands on Ozzfest, a hefty feet.

Emperor and Burzum are the only two black metal bands I truly love. I enjoy Immortal, Darkthrone, Satyricon, etc... but those two just feel more unique to me than the others.Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk is one of my favorite metal albums ever, so I do love Emperor. Scars of the Crucifix wasn't terrible, but Insineratehymn and In Torment in Hell wern't very good. I read an interview with Glen where he said that Roadrunner (their lable at the time) were fucking them pretty hard, so they just gave 'em 2 generic DM records. But then they signed with Earache which is great cause Scars was much better then the previous 2, and The Stentch of Redemption totally shreads.

Well, I gave into pressure and listened to the advance press copy of Mastodon's "Blood Mountain" that my friend was sent. I was gonna wait for the majesty of opening the shrink wrap, drooling over the beautiful art (it is a Mastodon album after all), and popping the retail version into the CD player... Regardless, this album owns. Mastodon were fairly unknown to me in 2004, even after the release of "Leviathan" and all the praise it got, I had only heard "March of the Fire Ants", "Iron Tusk", and a live version of "Megalodon". Then I heard "Blood and Thunder" and pretty much begged my at the time girlfriend to loan me the money to get me a copy. She did and from that moment on, it's a rare thing when a week goes by that "Leviathan" doesn't enter my CD player. "Remission" is almost as good, but it lacks the diversity that makes "Leviathan" so great. "Blood Mountain", however, is "Leviathan"'s succesor and peer. In a recent interview with Alternative Press when asked about the change in label and the addition of even cleaner vocals if they were afraid of being labeled "sell outs", guitarist Bill Kelliher responded with "If I heard some kid call me a sellout, I'd punch his face in." And this is the attitude the album gives you. There are calmer parts, but right when you start to think the album's going soft on you, it kicks you in the nuts and rocks your face off. To give an example of how otherworldy this album can feel, most of it reminded me of the Elder Scrolls game, Morrowind, more specifically, it's expansion pack, Bloodmoon. The album gives the feeling of being somewhere familiar, but at the same time, somewhere frightening and dangerous. Mastodon is one of the few modern metal bands that transcend genres and almost become an art form unto themselves. "Blood Mountain" deserves to be heard by any fan of music at all, not just metal fans, but for those of who us who are listening and see everyone on MTV enjoying the current youth culture, we smile to ourselves knowing that they're missing out on what is undoubtedly to my ears, a masterpiece.
10/10
(Sorry for my lengthy review, but God, I just love this album.)

The whole album owns if you ask me. Definitely a step up from the ok, but only a little better than mediocre Souls to Deny.

It's pretty damn good, but I wouldn't say it's one of the best metal albums ever recorded. That's not really a knock against it, it's just I like other stuff far better.

Emperor's Prometheus is kicking my ass all over the place. I am now committed to acquiring their other albums. I may also pick up some older Kreator. Extreme Aggression and Coma of Souls are delicious.

It definitely is the best album Kamelot ever recorded. Alot of their stuff is rather weak, but The Black Halo is actually really really good. I'd recommend to anyone with an interest in modern power metal.

I never cared for Prometheus, but for me Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk is THE number one black metal album. No other can take me on a journey every time I listen to it quite like that cd.

Well, I'll agree with you there, it's also the only album I can think of that Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir is on that I like.

Jeez, this thread just keeps going and going.
Kamelot's The Black Halo is awesome. I just wish more stores would carry some of their other albums so I don't have to deal with online crap.
And for you guys who like Strapping Young Lad - you should check out Bile. Bile is the only band I can think of that is similar to the SYL style of crazy, over the top, super metal, though Bile has a more industrial flavor. www.bilestyle.com I saw them live with KMFDM and they played killer live.

Well, it's good, but far from their best. It's better than Into the Lungs of Hell but nowhere near as good as Bloody Blasphemy, The Grand Grimoire, or Lair of the White Worm.
My problem with is it that the riffs are slightly more mellowed out and it almost sounds like they're approaching a more standard melodic death sound, which I don't care too much for. I love their melodic songs in the past (Soul Capture 1562 from Bloody Blasphemy is just about my favorite song ever) and they've always been a rather melodic band. It just sounds a bit more typical of other bands' sounds here. Luckily the songs ARE really well written. And it isn't completely modern gothenburg crap. The vocals are still excellent as ever. I love Henri's extreme and evil yet still understandable delivery. The riffs sound somehow less menacing than before though.
The album has a great collection of songs and I'm sure most people will love it. I love it myself, just not as much as most of their other output.

I really didn't think Kamelot's other albums were worth the time to buy anywhere. I picked up The Black Halo at the CD store and then when I couldn't find any others, I downloaded them, and then deleted them off my hard drive.
And yes, Bile is pretty good. "I Reject!"

I'm listening to it right now. So far it doesn't sound as bombastic as A Night at the Opera. Fly took time to grow on me. At first I thought it was okay, but then I paid attention to the lyrics and realized what it was about and it took on a whole new meening.

I like this album a lot. IMO, it's got some filler and it's no Peace Sells or RIP, but it's a solid Megadeth record.

A Night at the Opera > A Twist in the Myth
I could have really done without that interview at the end. It's a good CD, just didn't blow me away like I expected Blind Guardian to.

From what I can tell, most Blind Guardian fans believe it's the other way around. I think that ATITM is much better than ANATO. You could hardly hear the guitars half the time in Opera. But I still love it.
