Anyone else going to the San Diego Street Scene?

I went yesterday and I'm preparing to go today. This is my breakdown as to what I thought of all the bands I caught yesterday:

Nine Black Alps 3/10

Pretty plain not terribly original band, the music was o.k. but I soon found myself wandering off after only just a few songs.

Rock Kills Kid 4/10

A Little better than the previous band but they were one of those bands that sounds like a ton of different other bands without really carving out anything original for themselves.

She Wants Revenge 7/10

I liked these guys more when I saw them a couple of times as a little band named Interpol. They put on a good live show but they really are pretty much an Interpol clone through and through. The lead singer is really charismatic and the show was actually pretty good when all was said and done though.

Wolfmother 9/10

Now this is when the concert experience began to bloom for me, Wolfmother came out on stage and the whole crowd turned into a giant explosion of dancing, pitting, and just everyone having fun. It was sort of like being at a modern day classic rock concert, and the vibe was great. Wolfmother ripped through a beautifully rockin set and I have to say that they are outstanding live.

Wutang Clan 10/10

What can I say?, it's Wutang. It's not everyday you get to see that whole entire crew up on stage all mcing together. There is just something incredibly fun about chanting Wutang Clan aint nothin to fuck with along with thousands of other fans dancing around with you. I was really surprised at how much of a showman Methodman really is, he was crowd surfing while spitting out his rhymes and really took the forefront of the show. Also they ended with a tribute to ODB and the show just ended up being the highlight of my day.

AFI 4/10

I went over to check out the AFi stage due to my friend ranting on about how they are supposed to be really good live, 4 songs in I had to jet, it just wasn't my type of show. They had a good stage presence but the music just can't pull me in.

Social Distortion 7/10

Never been a big fan of Social D but they put on a pretty decent show. Their sound never really puts its hooks into my taste but they do have allot of talent and it was an interesting way to close out my night.

On a side note I walked past Kayne Wests stage on the way to the parking lot and he was doing a horrible cover of Gnarls Barkleys crazy. It actually made me shiver with how horrible it was.

Overall it was a great day, and I'm looking forward to what today has in store. I'll be back with my thoughts and musings tomorrow.

O.K. Here’s Day 2...

I started off by catching Margot and the nuclear So and So's. 6/10
Their album is pretty mediocre so I wasn't that excited about the show, and they really lived up to their name... They truly are so and so.

Next up was Dirty on Purpose 9/10

Hallelujah Sirens is one of the best albums released this year so far and their E.P. that came out last year was really well crafted so I had high hopes for this tiny Brooklyn based bands show and I was given everything I wanted and much more. These guys have the ability to be huge. They are like a cross breed between The Magnetic Fields, Sonic Youth and Built to Spill and come across with their own sound as well. It was a shame only like 20 people came over to watch their set because everyone else missed out. This is a band to really keep your eye on.

West Indian Girl 6.5/10

There are only like 3 songs I like by this band and I was lucky enough to catch them playing my favorite one when I had 15 minutes to spare before the futureheads took the stage next door. I enjoyed their performance but they really aren’t much more than fluffy feel good rock. Whenever I listen to their album I find myself skipping way too many tracks.

The Futureheads 8/10

I have wanted to see these guys for years and they put on a pretty decent show. They lose a little of their obscure harmony style that their albums are laced with live but they make up for it by upping the intensity. The crowd was into it and I had fun singing along while bobbing my head to the tunes.

The Subways 4/10

I only caught like 3 songs by these guys when me and my friend decided to walk around since there was about an hour to spare before the editors set. From what I gathered they pretty much came out with snooty attitudes and their music was bland and as totally unoriginal as one band could get.

The Editors 10/10

Now this was a show! The Back Room is pretty much my favorite album of the year so far and live these guys sound even better. My adrenaline went through the roof during their set and I just totally got immersed in the whole experience. What I love about these guys is that not only is their music well layered but their lyrics are intelligently written and live the vocals came across perfectly. This was a highlight of the festival for me.

The New York Dolls 8/10

We had to hurry to see the Ny Dolls show due to it starting about halfway through the editors set. Once I got there it was really strange. I never thought in my lifetime I would see the Ny Dolls play, but there they were up on stage blazing though a set. The highpoint of the show was when the guitarist they brought aboard to fill in the Late Great Johnny Thunders spot began singing You can't put your arms around a memory in tribute to Johnny and the whole band chimed in, it actually sort of hit me emotionally since I've spent hours upon hours listening to Johnny Thunders records. They of course closed out with Personality Crisis and that was a nice tasty treat seeing live. On a side note their new material wasn't that great.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs 10/10

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Karen O is one of the best stage performers around nowadays in the concert scene. This was my fifth time seeing them and my first time seeing the new cd's material on stage and again I was blown away. Pin is one of the best songs to see live ever. It was an explosive show and I loved every minute of it.

Bloc Party 3/10

The choice of headliners that I had to pick from was Tool, Bloc Party, and Snoop Dogg and I decided to start off with Bloc Party and then migrate over to Snoops stage after a couple of songs. I found myself jetting after the second song and hurrying over to Snoops stage well before the deadline I set for myself. I love Silent Alarm but live these guys really don't know how to carry themselves. The music sounds nothing like the album and I was generally unimpressed.

Snoop Dogg 10/10

All I have to say is Snoop Dogg knows how to work a crowd like no other. It seriously just felt like 1 giant party where everyone was there to have fun. He played all his classic tunes as well as his modern day hits and sometimes just went and freestyled stuff. The only downside was when Sean Paul came on stage to freestyle for like 10 minutes as they passed a blunt around. I can't stand Sean Paul, so it felt like a really looong 10 minutes for me. Snoop also took some time to tribute different artists. He played some Eazy E and got the whole crowd to sing along, He Played some 2 Pac, and at one point just put on Jump Around and rapped it getting the crowd hyped up. I can honestly say with all of the talent I've seen over the past 2 days Snoops show was the best in the realm of just having fun. A perfect way to end a really great weekend.
