WSJ: Scholar Warns Iran's Ahmadinejad May Have 'Cataclysmic Events' In Mind For August 22
Tue Aug 08 2006 10:22:35 ET

In a WALL STREET JOURNAL op-ed Tuesday, Princeton's Bernard Lewis writes: "There is a radical difference between the Islamic Republic of Iran and other governments with nuclear weapons. This difference is expressed in what can only be described as the apocalyptic worldview of Iran's present rulers."

"In Islam as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time -- Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined."

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad "and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the US about nuclear development by Aug. 22," which this year corresponds "to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to 'the farthest mosque,' usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1).

"This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind."

This guy has certainly been making some very provacative statements about Israel and the US and also about developing nukes. It has been admitted to this week that Iran was the country behind Hezzbollah and the Isreali attacks. Sounds like he might be planning something. And now today they are looking for 11 Egyptian students who didn't show up for an exchange program in the US- I think I heard they've been missing since July. Is something up or what?

No shit something's up. Ahmadinejad has been talking about it ever since he took to power last year. What pisses me off is that it took until now for people to realise that he's up to something and down to business, and what's worse - that there are people (Europe, the far left and the United Nations) that STILL refuse to accept that Ahmadinejad is nothing but bad news, and that he's up to something very sinister indeed, and is a deadly threat to the entire world. At least some people have awakened after the Hezbollah incident.

Do you think the U.N. has enough power left to do the required action?

Realistically, it's going to take an Iraq like invasion to get rid of this guy.

Iran is up to something, no doubt. I don't think Ahmadinejad has any real power, though, it's really the religious leaders.

I won't go into the "end times" part.

I think the imminance of the Apocalypse is the only thing Bush and Iranian president agree on.

If this numbskull tries to use any nuclear weapons on Israel or the US, the entire western world could still turn Iran into a parking lot.

And no, this isn't the end times. Christ said nobody would really know when it happens.

I don't see Iran as a real threat. I don't know, between them and Korea it's like we're to believe that just because these idiots bought Russian technology that they're as dangerous as the USSR was.

I should clarify that I don't think this is the end times as spoken of in the Christian bible but as that article mentioned it is what is written in his religion and he is trying to bring it all about.

I just think the fact that he started making all these outrageous statements and then ANNOUNCING that they are working on nukes is weird stuff. Why not just work on it secretly and deny it? I agree we could nuke Iran but they know we won't. They know we are constrained by caring about the innocents wheras they are not. That is why many of these terrorists are targetting civilians on purpose. They have no problem destroying millions.
