Say What?
Eegads man, I remember when I first saw Joanna Newsome. There were like 20 people in the bar and noone knew who she was (at that point she was burning her own cds on her home computer) and we all just stood there hypnotized at how beautifully she sang.
Calvin Johnson has an immediatly recognizable voice and when paired with Doug Maurtchs voice when they team up for the Halo benders it actually works beautifully.

How beautifully she sang? Unless she has RADICALLY changed her voice, sure.
I'm all for offbeat, out of tune singers (fuck, I love Jandek), but I heard Newsom's Sadie and I seriously considered not listening to anymore music, ever. It was that bad.
Come on there. I love Tom Waits, but I sure as shit ain't going to call his voice 'beautiful'.

Joanna Newsom makes my ears bleed too...I just can't hear the appeal in her scrawpy, childlike warble!

Is this for technically unskilled singers in general, or people with voices that just grate you?

Whenever my sister listens to Bright Eyes, I want to gouge my ears out. The same goes for this stupid ass screamo band From First To Last. The guy usually screams (which sucks), but when he tries to sing, it sounds like a dying animal. And yet millions of pre-pubescent girls don't give a shit because "he's hot."

Just those two. I love Jandek, can appreciate Jeff Mangum, and many other weirdos, and they sure as hell can't sing.

Well, I think otherwise bad singers can sound pretty good as long as they don't try to harmonize. I remember when Bob Dylan had an awful voice (before he stopped doing drugs), it was still tolerable because you could tell he wasn't trying to harmonize.

I like Newsom, but her voice can be too much at times. Plus she appears to be Fucked up and dumber than a sack of nails (http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=74395427592105899&q=joanna+newsom). I really love the harp music though.
The guy from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah sucks so much at singing. It's like after every note he has to make this fucking whining noise. Plus that Bellamy guy from Muse has this horrible breathing noise after each line.

Once again I think it boils down to personal preference. I find Tom Waits voice to be instantly comforting and with that comes it's own grovely beauty. Too many musicians just sound like carbon copies of other singers that came before them, to me certain off beat vocal styles can be beautiful. Now don't get me wrong I have my own distastes when it comes to vocals... Sean paul makes me want to dip my head in a vat of acid and end it all but that doesn't mean that someone else won't find his voice beautiful.

'Beautiful' does not, or at least shouldn't just equal 'things i enjoy'.

Not everything I enjoy do I find beautiful. Yet I find certain pitches and tones that do fall into that category. One person really can't tell another that something can't be beautiful in that other persons opinion. Like I said before it's up to interpretation.

When i think 'beautiful' voices, I think voices that are somewhat high pitched, slightly ethereal, soft, and singing in a soothing manner. Not Joanna Newsom, who is by all accounts, a screeching harpy of death.

But that's your idea of beauty.

I'd say Antony has an typically beautiful voice, pure, ethereal, soothing...but I also think bowieee is spot on about Waits, there's a raw beauty to his gravelly croon.
Some peeps think Kate Bush warbles like a banshee...I think she's one of the most classically beautiful vocalists around.

I saw Smog a couple of days ago and I think his keyboard player was Joanna Newsom. I might be wrong. But this keyboardist was singing all FUNNY, so i bet it was her.

How was the show besides that?
I've always wanted to see Smog.

Probably Newsom, she's going out with the guy from Smog and he guests on a song on her new album.

Pretty much any of the lead singers from the 80's hairbands except for Tom Keifer (Cinderella), he had a different sounding voice and I really liked it. The rest of them all sounded the same.

Dear members of Joblo.com,
It has come to my attention that I confused Calvin Johnson with Daniel Johnston. Daniel Johnston needs to go get cancer. Calvin Johnson is merely irritating.
Thanks,

Daniel Johnston may not have the greatest voice, but he is one of the best songwriters ever. I've really gotten into his stuff over the past six months or so.
You should watch The Devil and Daniel Johnston.
I actually just took a picture in front of his mural in downtown Austin this last weekend.

Bob Dylan can definitely sing. See: Nashville Skyline. He just rarely decided to use that voice.

Hell yes. The only album where I'd say his singnig was bad was "The Freewheelin Bob Dylan," which was a good record anyway.

Billy Corgan cannot sing live. I really can't stand him.
And the singer for Lincoln Park makes me want to sear my eardrums out with hot pokers! I hate Lincoln Park, I have no idea why they are so popular. They suck ass.

Say what you want about Joy Division, but there are very few singers who can sound as apocalyptic as Ian Curtis (I suppose compression helped).

Agreed his tones are somewhat dulcet...but his vocals were always incredibly impassioned and engaging.
Who gives a fuck anyway when you can perform like THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7pFaIEemwM)!!!
Check out Salfordian skallywag John Cooper Clarke doing "Evidently Chicken Town" at the beginning...that's how we Northern kids talk that is!

Well, I dig Joy Division anyway. I just got Closer and while I love the actual music, I can't really stand his vocals. Maybe I'll warm up to them.
