I grew up with it, i cried with it, i loved it, i still love it and i plan to see it about 3 or 4 times when it gets re-released in theaters in a 4 days. I can not wait, i just hope the special effects don't make E.T. look like a Jar-Jar character, i loved the muppetry of the original!

Who else will check it out in theaters?

The Shadow

Not I. I loved it as much as the next guy, but I can't stand the tampering it has recieved. People who want to make movies "more suitable" should BURN IN HELL along with the MPAA.

To tell you the truth, all...I've never seen E.T. all the way through. But as I must view the re-release over the weekend, I'm making checking out the "untouched" version beforehand one of my top priorities.

Damn You Spielberg! Does anyone else not agree with the STUPID changes he made? Cutting out "Penis Breath?" Yeah, I know its a kiddie movie, but c'mon. And the whole "terrorist" thing, sure, it might be in good taste, but where do we draw the line? If somone starts murdering based on the 7 deadly sins, do we pull Se7en? Movies are a form of art that charactrize a time, removing things because of recent events unless VERY neccessary is just ridiculous in my opinion.

They cut out "penis breath"???? WTF!!!!

That is my favorite line in the movie.....seriously.

I love E.T., it's one of my all time favorite movies and I do plan on seeing the re-release, but Speilberg better not have tampered with the film too much, or I will be disappointed.

Not me...i'm just gonna watch the original E.T. in the quietness of my own home...don't have to deal with the booger machines that will be flooding the theatres with their irresponsible parents...besides my money is going to Blade 2 and Sorority Boys this week.

I'll go see it again. I'm taking my nieces to go see it they are about the same age I was when I saw it. Damn I'm getting f'in old. And I'm just turning 22. It will be cool to see there reactions, although kids nowadays don't react as much as I think I did. Maybe it's because kids are just to damn spoiled and usd to movies and cartoons being on 24/7 like on the cartoon network and stuff. I had to wait until saturday morning to see any kinda cartoon, and I was stoked when it was Saturday . Now it's nothing to see a cartoon on when you flip. And It was a treat to go see a movie at the theatre, cuz you only went in a blue moon. But oh well, i'll still take the rugrats. I'm not looking forward to the changing of stuff like penis breath. I never turned out totally warped and I seen that movie in the theatre. They need to relax a little. Is it better to see it in the theatre, and your parent tells you not to say it, or for the kid to learn it in school. either way I guess who cares.

I wasn't planning to until I saw the preview and heard Henry Thomas scream, "Well what're we waitin' for, let's GO!" Now I just have to go because that line just stirred up all my memories. That and I have to see Drew Barrymore's screaming fit. Me and my brother used to rewind that over and over because we thought it was so funny. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'd love to see E.T. on the big screen (I was just a baby when it came out back in '82). The extra scenes and touched up CGI effects seem rather blah to me, and I still don't like the fact that Spielberg edited out the guns, but I will still see it.
True story: when I saw it for the first time, oh so many years ago, it scared the living shite out of me! E.T.'s squeal was frightening to me at that young age.

Who the fuck cares if Spielberg changed the guns to walkie talkies? If no one were to tell you, you would probably not even notice. Changes like this happen all the time -- right under your nose. If today's technology was available in 1982, I am sure that he would have considered these very changes. Also, since this is Spielberg's movie, I am sure that he has the right to do with it.

Knowing Spielberg, I am nearly 100% confident that his subtle changes have nothing to do with plot or character development. However, his extra footage may. If you loved the movie, why wouldnt you want to see the movie (in its entirety) in high definition video and sound? I do not think that Spielberg is an idiot...you should give him that much credit.

I think they had the technology back than to hold walkie talkies instead of guns back in the day when they were filming it.

I'll definitely be seeing ET in the theater. When I go home for Easter next week, I hope that my whole family will go see it together.

I've heard that the bathtub scene that has been added is absolutely amazing, so I don't have a problem with any changes. I don't see why the guns were changed to walkie talkies...I see no point...but it doesn't really bother me.

Pseudo, what technology were you talking about? How hard could it have been to hold a walkie talkie instead of a fake gun?

I'll definitely be seeing it. If it was somebody aside from Spielberg tampering with it, I'd be offended. But since it's the man himself, I don't mind at all. I haven't seen E.T. since I was six and I barely remember it, and I can't wait to see it again in theaters no less!

Im not going to see it because of the extra cgi crap, im going to see it because i never got a chance to see this film on the big screen and its one of my favorites! Heck if i haf a choice i wouldn't tamper with it, but hey, it gives me somthing new to look forward to, though i pray to God that it doesent ruine the films heart.

Perhaps it would have been simpler to film the scene with walkie talkies than it was to replace them with CGI. The thing is that if they had today's technology, they would be able to touch up those elements right under your nose. I dont know if you realize it, but half the magazine covers that you see every day are airbrushed. Perhaps it may not be as universally used in the individual frames of movies, but it is generally the same concept.

I think its sad that you think that one insignificant change (where they substitute guns with walkie talkies) makes you believe that Spielberg possibly ruined the film's "heart". The change has nothing to do with the overall message or tone of the movie. It is simply an element that Spielberg thought was inappropriate (on a second glance).

The heart of a literary work is not determined solely by the individual lines or elements. A masterpiece is determined by how those lines and elements are grouped together.

First off im not dissapointed about the guns being replaced with walkie talkies, anyone mad about that needs a life. What im upset about is that they might turn E.T. into a character thats only soul purpose is to illude us with his "awsome" cgi appearance, ala the new Star Wars. Im affraid that the new scenes will not add any new element of love or friendship between Eliot and E.T., that they will be there to get more people to see the "new" stuff in the movie ($), and that the scenes will again be fill in cgi to keep our eyes peirsced. I never mentioned the replacement of weaponry ruining the re-release, though i did find it more tence knowing that these pigs want the alien so bad, that they will stop at nothing, not even the pain or death by children holding him to get in the way of their search for the outer limit, but hey, its Speilburgs film not mine, and no matter what i'll be happy with it.

I got to see the first twenty minutes while I worked today, and part of the scene where the house is turned into a hospital. When I saw that part, a doctor walks in and says "He's got DNA!" The other doctor's respond with "He's got DNA?" and a bunch of other mumbled lines. Followed by "Positive, he's got DNA."--that was in the original, I remember it by heart. However, instead, it was changed to something about the nucleotides, or some scientific word. I didn't like it. Most people will not recognize it, but it made me mad. Once I see it all, I'm interested in seeing how much re-dubbing Spielberg actually did, and why did he change something dumb like that in the first place.

The first twenty minutes were excellent, and went by incredibly fast. I have peeves about the CGI E.T.. Makes him look too fake. Also, the part where Elliot finds him in the bushes or whatever that was, and E.T. goes crazy. It was so effective in the original, but Spielberg added a some frames, so the shot showing E.T. shows his whole face, and by extending the shot, it isn't as quick and freaky as it used to be. This is bad because what made the original so good is that E.T. was revealed slowly. You don't see all of him at once. Big mistake. I'm glad they left in the only funny line in the movie -- "It was nothing like that penis breath!" I'd rather he just left it alone, because it is imprinted on my brain, and I hate that. At least the original will be on DVD. I hope he at least remasters that version, then I'll be happy. But that doesn't take away the fact the I enjoyed every minute of the movie. I hope to see it as much as possible before it leaves my multiplex.

Scorsese didn't tamper with Taxi Driver when it was remastered restored and rereleased in 1996. GRRRR! Spielberg should have just left in the 3 R's and not added the T. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Here are the exact words of James Bernadelli:

...This "special edition" of E.T. is the fruit of the successful re-launching of Star Wars a few years ago. Emboldened by his friend George Lucas' triumph, Spielberg went to work on E.T., employing modern-day special effects to enhance some of the film's more awkward moments. Some of the CGI work is evident, although not in a distracting way. The government agents now carry walkie-talkies rather than guns (not a big deal). Two short scenes of no great moment have been added (one featuring E.T. taking a bath). However, contrary to some rumors, the "penis-breath" line has survived. And Harrison Ford is still M.I.A. (Ford filmed a cameo that was cut from the original release; Spielberg elected not to use it in this version, either.) Essentially, though, it's the same movie. The changes are minor, bordering on inconsequential.

There are those who castigate Spielberg for having the temerity to make changes to a classic. Such claims are frivolous. Nothing Spielberg has done has an impact on the essence of the movie. The alterations amount to cosmetic touch-ups. And this is a case when the director, the creative force and cinematic "author", is the one making the changes. Plus, it isn't as if the existence of the "special edition" is designed to expunge the memory of its predecessor. This is not a replacement; it's an alternative. Reportedly, both versions will be available on the Special Edition DVD that Universal Studios plans to release for the 2002 Holiday Season...

I couldn't have said it better myself..

I went and saw this yesterday, and I absolutely loved it. Everything the ads are proclaiming - the magic, the mystery, the adventure - are all still as present as ever in "E.T.". I'll be lucky if I see a better movie on the big screen this year. 10/10.

Oh, I have a few minor qualms - a CGI E.T. is used in certain scenes intact from the original version. IE, when Elliot stumbles upon him in his back yard. This is less effective, I think, than the charming old puppet. But the changes are minimal and the movie is wonderful, so do yourself a favor and check it out.

I don't dislike ET but it is not a movie for me especially now that I am over 10 years old.

And from what I have heard Speilberg has editted some things out and changed some things like guns to walkie talkies.

What a pussy!

Like ET is responsible for all the gun deaths since it was put out.

Stuff like that makes me want to kick him in the balls and tell him to get a life, if you do not want to make films that have guns don't but why go back and change a flick so old, it's pathetic.

That is another reason why I will not support this flick.

ET go home!

Uhh, ok Common Sense Man. Don't you think you're overreacting just a tad?

Spielberg has said the FBI agents with guns always disturbed him a little. I agree it's a little extreme to have these antagonists carry shotguns to use against 10-year olds. I'm sure Spielberg acted on his own feelings as well as those of his more sensitive audience members.

Me, I don't give a shit. The guns would not have bothered me. But how does this make him a "pussy" for editing this little detail?? You just seemed to get a little too upset over nothing.

It's still a great film. I saw it again today... well, ok, "Ice Age" (my intended movie of choice) was sold out, but I was most happy to see "E.T." again.

All right, ET is back in action. Unfortunatley, I feel ET would have been a bettter film all together if ET had killed someone, or token over the world. Think of it, president ET. I'd vote for him, especially with Jessie Ventura as Vice President. We'd never have to worry about terrorist attacks, ET would mumble some jiberish, and then re-leash secrertary of deffense HULKAMANIA to crush the arab terrorist. And thats why this movie is my vision of the perfect world, God Bless America, My home sweet home. Till then, keep your guns loaded, and your zombie dead.

Well, I saw it in theaters when it was rereleased back in2002.... as I wasn't born during the original release. I enjoyed myself, the whole wlakie talkie thing Inever really noticed, for some reason.... my only problem was the new E.T> what the hell was that? Spielberg made him UNSCARY. The original E.T. scared the shit out of me as a kid, and STILL creeps me out to this day! If i saw this thing when I was 3, I wouldn't have flinched!
