Poseidon is 16.99 for the 1 disc, and $23 for the 2 disc.... Jarhead was $17 for the 1 disc and $35 for the 2 disc... the munich 2 disc cant even be found any more... Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and Mission: Impossible 3 are both doing it, and im sure more movies will be also... why are the studios doing this? I get that these studios want to make the most money possible.. but arent all companies supposed ot be about the customer.. i just cant comprehend why these studios are so content on screwing the true fans of the format or of film by in all ho9nesty, forcing us to pay that extra money for the bonus features.
The reason i got into DVD was to try and know how they made the movies, the crazy insane shots, and learn how life is on a set! That is what has always intrigued me, which is why i am at film school right now making my own movies... so when i see a movie is being released with a 1 disk bare bones dvd and a 2 disc loaded dvd... i have to have the 2 disc one, because if i am going to buy something, i am going to do it right! If i didnt want the 2 disc version, that generally means i dont even want the movie... but i just feel like what the studios are doing here is complete bull shit and i hope it is just a trend that will soon pass, because it is going to get to the point where i just wont buy any more.. and my basically a paper weight dvd burner will start to get the use it so deserves! I want to spend money on dvd's to support my favorite films... but if it gets to the point where it is 100% positive the studios dont care 1 bit about the customer, then fuck the studios and i will start burning it all!

I usually buy the 2 disc edition (Munich, V for Vendetta, Harry Potter) but some movies aren't worth the extra money (Poseidon, AvP).
Unless a movie has some really good extras, the 2nd disc is a waste of money. In Poseidons case I feel the 2nd disc is to just sucker people into getting the disc so that the extra 6-8 dollars (depending where you buy it) goes to the company since it did so poor at the Box Office.

This is a rant I can't even begin to comprehend. The number one complaint about movie studios when dvds were getting popular was that they released special editions months after the original version, therefore making a lot of people feel like they were getting ripped off. If the movies are now being released in the separate editions ON THE SAME DAY, that seems to me like the studios actually listened to people's complaints, and now people are complaining about THAT too?
I don't watch dvd extras. I'll gladly buy the cheaper version. No, it doesnt mean I 'didnt care about the movie in the first place', it in fact means that i ONLY care about the movie. I don't see what the big deal is.

... why are the studios doing this?
Because some people don't give a rat's ass about extras. They just want the film.

I like the extras as much as the next person, but i will only watch them once or twice then never again, If i decide to buy a movie I by the single barebones, if i really want to see the extras I will rent the movie to see them.

"Black Hawk Down" comes out in a single edition, then some months later, a three disc edition, lately, a single disc extended cut. The key thing there is that all releases were months apart. So, for the poor fools who didn't pay close attention to relese schedules, buying two or more editions of just this one film was damned likely. In a perfect world, as far as I'm concerned, every possible edition of a film will street all at one time. Sorry, but so disagree with you, man.

i def understand where people are coming from with the special editions getting released months later... and that does make more sense to me that they release both editions on the same day. Good point to all who made that 1.
But i still feel... back in the day, and even some movies recently... they will release a movie in 2 disc editions as soon as it is released and it will only cost me 16.99.. not fuckin $30!
i think of stuff like The Devil's Rejects: Unrated cut... it was released with the regular rated cut, the unrated cut was a 2 disc set with a bonus dvd of a full length documentary on how the movie was made. BOTH editions retailed for the same exact price.
Or look at Clerks 2... when it is released on Dec 5... it will be released as a 2 disc special edition... that is all it is being released as... 2 discs! And the retail is reasonable (it's 28.99 which means it will be 16.99 on release date and 19.99 normally).
I just hope that studios start going back to this way of releasing stuff and simply releasing only 2 disk sets. or at the very least.. make the price not much more expensive... in that i mean, if Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest single disc sales for 16.99... then sale the 2 disc special edition for 18.99... something to where it doesnt feel like i'm completely getting ripped off!
make sense?

I absolutely hate this trend. However I think it is here to stay, the only hope of this ever going away is if nobody buys the 2 disc and they get stuck with a ton of unsold discs but I know that won't happen. The only thing I ask is that studios make that second disc worth the extra 5-10 bucks. In most cases it is not.
One of the worst examples in recent memory was the Walk the Line 2 disc set. For that extra 5-10 bucks all they offered was about an hour of features 5 postcards and better packaging. This is bullshit, if they are gonna make movie fans like us spend the extra money for the features offer something of substance. I think 3 hours of features should be the minimum offered for these SE's anything less should be sold as a standard edition.

How does this irritate you? I'm with The Heart Collector - one of my number one complaint about DVD releases is when they release a special edition like 6 months or even a few years after the original DVD. I think it's wonderful that they release the bare-bones for the casual buyers and the special editions for the serious buyers at the same time. What pisses me off about the special editions, though, is that if you don't get them when they come out, you can't get them at all. I was recently looking into buying both the Munich and the Jarhead special edition DVDs, only to find out that they have both been discontinued and can't be found or bought anywhere normal. Sure, there's e-bay and DVD markets like the one on Amazon, but I don't trust those things.
