It's almost September, so you know what that means.
Yahoo Fantasy hockey is back. I'm hoping to do another Live Draft this year, so hopefully we'lll have more people participating in it. I just need some feedback as to whether we should do head-to-head or rotisserie.

I'd prefer rotisserie. Just with somewhat minimal work to be done after the initial draft.
I would prefer not to have to even touch it after the draft, unless I wanted to make a trade. Shifting my lineup for each game last year was a chore. Maybe just no extras to shift in/out of the lineup each game. If someone's hurt, it's up to you to determine if you want to ride out the injury, or get rid of the guy for someone else.

Interesting idea, but I'm worried that it will really cut down on active participation in the league. It doesn't take that long to set up lineups and people can set up the entire year in advance if they want to.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of that idea. And I'd prefer Head to Head, mainly because in Rotisserie if someone gets a huge lead in a week, it's very unlikely anyone can trim the lead.

Not a big fan of what idea? Rotisserie?

Ok, I've set up the Yahoo league, but everything can be changed if we decide so.
Right now it's set to rotisserie with a draft set for Sat. Sept 16 at 7:30 PM EST.
There are right now:
2 LW
2 C
2 RW
4 D
2 G
2 Util (any player can use them)
4 BN (bench)
The ID is 14802 and the password is "ovechkinMVP"
There's lot's of room so don't hesitate to join.

That's really just blah.
And I still prefer Head to Head, Rostisserie is where everyone just stops paying attention.

Ok, I switched it to Head-to-head, just to spice things up.
So far only Brodeur has signed up. Unless there are more people signing up, I can see this thing folding fast.

I'm in this year and since I have more time this year and I will have a computer in the near future I won't have to resort to other friends computers or the library to keep track.
Draft date and time is cool with me.

Draft is still going ahead as scheduled next Saturday at 7:30 EST.
Attendance doesn't look good right now, so I'm probably going to make HUGE teams to make up for that.

Ok. Draft is tonight at 7:30 PM EST again.
The teams will have 30 players each. MUAHAHAHAHAHA!
But since there are only 4 teams, the draft shouldn't take very long.

Ok, something fucked up with Yahoo.
Long story short, the Live draft will be held at 9:30 PM EST tonight instead of 7:30.

Ok, 30 minutes before the draft it swtiches it to Autopick because we have an odd number of people. So the earliest I can make it is 10:00 PM then.

We've got a new guy.
We have 30 guys per team.
And I just checked. The times have been taken up, so we can do 11:30 PM tonight or reschedule for Monday.
EDIT: Ok, the guy just deleted his team.
EDIT2: Apparently he's back.

I don't know. People are coming in and out of the league. I guess they don't like what they see.
As of now, the draft is at 11:30 PM EST tonight. It's the only space left before Monday.
I could cancel though. And if someone doesn't STAY in the league until 30 minutes before, then it won't happen anyway.

Well, I did anyways. Which is why I took him #7 overall in this draft. The concensus was I took him too early, though. We'll see. As Maz says, his success will depend on how bad his injury is. Not good seeing him go down so early in the preseason.

Well, TSN had a fantasy draft last night featuring Glenn Healey, Bob McKenzie, Pierre Mcguire, Keith Jones, and Dave Hodge. I thought Id compare their picks to ours by going through each of their picks, then indicating which number he was picked by one of us in our pool, and who got him.
Note, in their pool, they had to select one rookie and one sleeper pick, and the point structure is not the same as ours, but its still interesting to see who was picked when anyways. I didnt include the last round of their pool since it was a special Sleeper Round that I thought would skew the results.
Anyways, here are the draft results:
1. Joe Thornton 1 The Master Of Pain
2. Sidney Crosby 5 TheMazVolta
3. Alexander Ovechkin 2 TheBankStreetBullies
4. Eric Staal 14 TheBankStreetBullies
5. Jaromir Jagr 4 Brodeur
6. Miikka Kiprusoff 3 hocks
7. Evgeni Malkin 7 ToRontoRon
8. Nicklas Lidstrom 15 hocks
9. Ilya Kovalchuk 12 The Master Of Pain
10. Martin Brodeur 6 ToRontoRon
11. Daniel Alfredsson 11 TheBankStreetBullies
12. Dany Heatley 8 TheMazVolta
13. Brad Richards 93 Brodeur
14. Pavel Datsyuk 36 The Master Of Pain
15. Phil Kessel 171 hocks
16. Vincent Lecavalier 67 ToRontoRon
17. Scott Niedermayer 19 ToRontoRon
18. Chris Pronger 20 TheMazVolta
19. Tomas Vokoun 17 TheMazVolta
20. Sergei Zubov 42 ToRontoRon
21. Wojtek Wolski 143 TheBankStreetBullies
22. Sergei Gonchar 37 The Master Of Pain
23. Simon Gagne 30 ToRontoRon
24. Peter Forsberg 31 ToRontoRon
25. Jason Spezza 9 Brodeur
26. Bryan McCabe 34 hocks
27. Wade Redden 39 hocks
28. Jiri Hudler Not Drafted
29. Dion Phaneuff 21 Brodeur
30. Mats Sundin 54 ToRontoRon
31. Mathieu Schneider 40 Brodeur
32. Dustin Penner Not Drafted
33. Marty Turco 41 TheMazVolta
34. Manny Fernandez 26 TheBankStreetBullies
35. Lubomir Visnovsky 57 Brodeur
According to this, the 2 biggest bargains in our draft were hocks with Phil Kessel at 171, (15th in theirs), and TheBankStreetBullies with Wojtek Wolski at 143, (21st in theirs). However, since every panelist had to take a rookie, this is a little skewed, and the biggest bargain is probably Brodeurs pick of Brad Richards at 93, (13th in theirs).
The three highest ranked players by us that werent drafted by any of them were:
10 Jonathan Cheechoo By hocks
13 Marian Hossa By The Master Of Pain
18 Jarome Iginla By ToRontoRon
Yours truly had the most players picked by them, for whatever thats worth. Here are how many of our players were picked by them:
ToRontoRon - 8
Brodeur - 6
hocks - 5
TheBankStreetBullies - 5
TheMazVolta - 5
The Master Of Pain 4
Like I said, there were different rules for their draft, so take these results with a big time grain of salt, but theyre still interesting nonetheless.
Bring on Week 1. Youre going down Maz.

'When Phoenix Coyotes centre Jeremy Roenick got news of the TSN Fantasy Draft, he was naturally upset that a) no one asked him to participate, and b) TSN's hockey experts could miss out on so much other talent. That being said, TSN gave the always-charismatic player a chance to draft his own team with the remaining players available.'
Here's who JR picked:
Markus Naslund
Joe Sakic
Teemu Selanne
Ed Jovanovski
Rob Blake
Roberto Luongo

Well, good news bad news for me.
The good news is that I beat outsyder last week, the bad news is that I'm being annihilated by Brodeur so far this week. 6-0 after one day, and it'll be worse after tonight. Yikes.

Ok, somebody in another pool made me a trade offer:
Paul Stastny
Marek Svatos
Nathan Horton
Alexander Semin
for my
Patrik Elias
Tuomo Ruutu
If I would make the trade, I'd probably drop Jussi Jokinen and Ales Kotalik.
Any opinions?
Svatos and Stastny will put up more points than Jokinen and Kotalik. Semin and Horton seem to be pretty on and off players from what I've seen so far...I don't know. If Elias has been a monster for you so far, I wouldn't take it. If he's disappointing, I'd give it a shot.
outsyder
12-04-2006, 11:45 PM
Semin has been a point per-game player and Horton isn't doing that good right now.
Elias is starting to turn it around with the EGG Line and Ruutu is playing well and should do better when Havlat gets back.
So that's why I'm pretty stuck on the idea.

Congrats on winning the pool outsyder.
It was quite a battle the last 2 weeks with all the roster moves. I might suggest that next year we limit it to one per week or something to avoid the craziness of rearranging your roster every night that I have to admit I started in the semifinal.
I actually thought the final was going to end up a tie, but they changed the assist on one of the Colorado goals from Hejduk, whom I had, to Liles who I didn't. That was the difference.
You want to hear the sickest part?
After Ben Eager went nuts with 26 PIM in one game, I decided I had no chance of catching you for PIM despite trying to pick up every goon known to man, so I decided to make some changes and focus on PPP and GWG. So on Saturday night I was literally seconds away from taking Mike Richards, who scored a power play game winning goal on Sunday that would have allowed me to win the pool 5-4. I picked up Brendan Morrison at 2:56AM, Trent Hunter at 2:59AM, but apparently the cut off is 3:00AM, because as I tried to pick Richards up, I could not get him for Sunday.
On Sunday I remembered picking up a couple of scoring type players, and as Richards scored the game winning goal, I was sure that I had him in the pool, too. I was shocked when I double checked the roster and saw that he was the one I was unable to get. I noticed Hunter and Richards on the available players list pretty much at the same time, and I just as easily could have taken Richards first, then tried to get Hunter.
Long story short, if I would have decided to go back on the internet one minute earlier on Saturday night, I would have won the pool. lol
Oh well. It was fun.
Hey outsyder, II need your advice. I'm in another playoff pool for money and I think I'm going to load up on Ducks and Senators. If I were to take two Sens defencemen, which two do you think I should take based only on points? Which two are healthiest and getting the most ice time and power play time right now between Redden, Preissing and Corvo?
outsyder
04-09-2007, 12:44 PM
Preissing was great last year for San Jose, but I don't know if he's going to get the ice time to make any significant points this year.
Redden hasn't been good this year, but last year's playoffs was pretty good for him. He'd be good to risk. And also go for Joe Corvo. At the beginning of the year he was terrible, but during the stretch run, he's been all kinds of awesome and putting up some great point numbers.
So Redden and Corvo for sure.
Also, I wouldn't bet on the Ducks. Minny has a very good chance to upset them, especially if Gaborik gets hot again (like he did the last time Minny was in) and Niklas Backstrom maintains his phenomenal play. I'd load up on Predators if I were you, especially on D, as practically all of their Dmen put up great numbers. I'd try and work some Sabres in there too. Especially Chris Drury and depending what kind of pool, Tim Connolly will be a steal.
And as for the pool, Ben Eager's meltdown saved me. But at the same time, I really wish I hadn't assumed the pool ended last week and dropped all my good players last Saturday. At least I still ended up winning. Thank God for the PP.
