Comingsoon.net is reporting that Johnny Depp will star as the demon barber of Fleet Street in the big-screen production of the hit Broadway horror-musical, to be directed by Tim Burton.

No word on whether the movie version will actually be a musical, or who will star opposite Depp as Mrs. Lovett, his neighbor and partner in crime.

Never heard of it. But it's Burton and Depp, does it matter who the female costar will be? This duo always makes for a good time at the movies; I doubt this time will be the exception.

Well I have NOT seen ol Sweeney Todd personally but familiar with it.
From what I heard there is a segment that gets supposedly bloody during a certain number. And Tim Burton signing on as director.... This is sooooo up his alley and as usual Depp as the barber is a match made.

The final product gotta be RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Though I fear it may be a PG-13 flick so that it would rake in = $$$$$$

Youve never heard of Sweeney Todd!!! Its only one of the most celebrated muscials of the last 60 years.

Also its extremely important who plays the female lead. Angela Lansbury's portryal of Miss Lovett in the original is considered groundbreaking and one of the best leading lady performances in somehwat recent musical history

Happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy happy happy joy joy joy joy joy!

You had me at "Burton and Depp". Still curious about the Believe It Or Not movie with Jim Carrey, but Burton and Depp. Oh, and Depp is going to sing. Fucking sing. He's seemed to avoid it whenever possible before. But now he's gonna sing. Hell, I'm so excited. I love when Burton does musicals. And this is all dark and gothic and weird. It's perfect.

Honestly get the music its really amazing.

I'm still curious how well Depp can sing. I mean anyone who has listened to the music knows that its one of the most complex scores ever.

In the end though who cares about Sweeney. The true meaty role of the show is easily Mrs. Lovett. The question is who will be her. I have a feeling it will be Helen Bonham Carter.

I happen to be revisiting the directors cut of "Cry Baby" and read an interesting trivia segement via IMDB that Depp did supposedly sing some of the numbers seen in the movie soooooooo unless its some other singer they use to pretend that it is him I think Depp can pull it off.

As for Burton Movies and filling in parts for female characters I wouldn't be suprised that Helena will be in there somewhere. His ex was seen in at least a good portion of movies he previously done.

sounds good BorderEvill

that would also be cool if Angela Lansbury was given like a cameo or something since she originated the role.

Don't know too much about the film, but if Depp has proven anything over the course of his career, it is that he can play any role with style. I'm in!

I just hope it is more Edward Scissorhands Tim Burton/Johhny Depp style and not that Charlie and the Chocalate Factory shit.

yea edward scissorhands was great, which is kind of obvious that i liked it, i guess.... but in regard to charlie and the chocolate factory.. i can see why people don't like it. The reason that I do is because it is closer to what Roald Dahl supposedly wanted, and I like that. Also, it gave the audience a different look at the original story and original Willy Wonka that Gene Wilder played. It allowed the audience to see different ways that the role can be interpreted, with the lighter and darker sides to Willy Wonka.
But, yea... I think that any Depp/Burton collaboration is worth watching atleast once

I was thrilled to hear this news...I just saw the Broadway revival the day of it's closing...amazing. I know many fans of the original are partial towards the 1979 version and favor Angela Lansbury, but I thought Patti LuPone gave an amazing interpretation as well..she had that spark about her but also gave a human quality to the role. I think this casting decision will have a big impact on whether or not I enjoy this film..Mrs. Lovett is a hugely important character..I really hope they don't mess this up.

Michael Cerveris was wonderful as well..and he really is Sweeney Todd in my mind. However, I am a huge fan of Johnny Depp's work and think that he is extremely versatile and brings such heart and soul to his roles and really becomes his characters..so I am excited to see what he does with Sweeney. I am slightly concerned about the music..though I am happy that from what I hear they are taking the musical route. The thing that what really makes this show great is Sondheim's music. It is, as someone has mentioned, very complex so that is what worries me with Depp singing because I've never heard him. I'm sure if he's going along with it though he has the chops to do it.

I fell in love with the revival, it is now one of my favorite musicals..and I believe that it is in good hands with a such a visionary director as Tim Burton, I can't picture another director for it. With the dark tones, moods, and atmospheres that were especially present in the revival, he is definately the man for the job.
