Here's an idea i've seen work quite well elsewhere so not being adverse to the occasional bit of ideas theft i've decided to start a thread in which schmoes can post links to any of the many musical treasures available on YouTube. Anything goes providing it's music related. Live performances, videos, interviews...anything. I'll start off with a few that have caught my eye and ear recently.

Chris Cunningham & The Aphex Twin - Rubber Johnny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJUChQSDmsM)

A lot of people have probably seen Rubber Johnny. But if you haven't...heh.

The Horrors - Sheena Is A Parasite (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZMrwZItOGE)

Another slice of Chris Cunningham wrongness starrring (believe it or not) Emily Watson as Sheena (who is a parasite and seems to have some kind of tentacled appendage up her skirt). Fun times.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Death Is Not The End (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF2kpkiYwVk)

Nick Cave...the Bad Seeds...Kylie Minogue...and Shane McGowan sharing a stage and performing a blinding version of Death Is Not The End.

Stuart Staples - 16 Summers 15 Falls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p65C9R_Gqug&mode=related&search=)

Ex-lead singer of Tindersticks in acoustic mode. Nice.

Relaxed Muscle - Mary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxEKs9Yvkds)

Jarvis Cocker caught live during his Relaxed Muscle phase. I love this song.

Jim Reid - Dead End Kids (Live At Carling Academy Islington Bar 2006) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbHfVKmtQyo)

Jim Reid (ex of The Jesus & Mary Chain) in a recent live performance.

The Jesus & Mary Chain - Snakedriver (Live On Later 1993) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92e3HKmd_2Y)

Watch out for the mike malfunction. Great live performance though.

Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road (Live At The Hammersmith Odeon, London 1975 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYPSZiE0OAs)

One of the most spine tingling live performances i've seen. Beautiful.

The Killers - When You Were Young (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lcWM0pQdF4)

Didn't know what to think of this, the first single from the forthcoming Sam's Town, but it's grown on me. Love it now.

Wicked good idea Psycho...

I love the Mary performance obviously, Jarvis is very endearing here for some reason and I always love the way he delivers the "but drugs Mary, fucking drugs!" line.

Christ, NME's flavour of the minute THE HORRORS are really quite appalling, what has gotten into you man!!!??? Cool video though...so I forgive you, mwah. Still they are Nathan Barleys of the highest order.

I likey, likey, LIKEY the Nick 'n' Shane 'n' Kylie performance...it just seems like a really special little collaboration somehow...and they all seem to be completely at ease with one another and the words they are singing, it's really lovely.

Fab geetar solo on the Jesus & Mary Chain performance, word!

The Bruce Springsteen video really is something else...like you said, absolutely spine-tingling.

Here are a couple of favourites for now...

Serge Gainsbourg - Requiem Pour Un Con (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxIoraGBSic)
In terms of COOL factor, nobody comes close to Monsieur Gainsbourg!

Throbbing Gristle - Discipline (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZlAQ44VRDQ)
Now P-Orridge is pure industrial..be frightened little children, he has tits now! Amazing performance though...I must thank my friend Gavin for introducing me to these cats!

Pulp - The Fear (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voRljnoc3K0)
Jarvis is clearly off his tits on disco biscuits, but this is a great performance of a great fucking tune. Hardcore indeed.

Here's a few.

The Sun: Romantic Death
Great tune, wedded to maybe my favourite vid ever. VERY NSFW.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0FNHpfMPzI

The Grates: 19 20 20
The bounciest most fun pop record you haven't heard this summer, wonderful.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k35b7M-BtYI

CSS: Let's Make Love (and Listen to Death From Above)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgh8rOzB8qw

Regina Spektor: Us
I heard this song on an ad and never knew what it was until, by chance, I picked up Regina Spektor's Soviet Kitsch album today. It's a stunning piano driven piece, recalling the the best of Tori Amos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pKujuTgtL0

Sons and Daughters: Taste The Last Girl
My favourite song by my favourite British band of the moment.

Some more...

Sebadoh - Willing To Wait (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Dm8X0fv2gg)

I've always been fond of Sebadoh's quieter more melancholy tunes and this is a good one.

Hope Of The States - George Washinton (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8wFd09aUsA)

Love this song...this is a nice live version.

Bobby Gillespie and Mani of Primal Scream interviewed at Glastonbury 2005 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0ET7D4_E4Y)

Funny as fuck!!!

Joan As Police Woman - Eternal Flame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ2Pc-Y9hgE)

A gorgeous song courtesy of a woman who is a regular collaborator with Rufus and Anthony. Lovely stuff.

Joan As Police Woman - The Ride (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XS5mQawaQg&mode=related&search=)

Another slice of Joan.

Rufus Wainwright - Dinner At Eight (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl_S2xtUhrY&mode=related&search=)

A gorgeous live version of Dinner At Eight.

Spiritualized - Broken Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0dz6rEXwpQ)

Jason Pierce lays his heart and soul bare. This is just...wow!!!

Hole - Northern Star (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nateDeHd44w&mode=related&search=)

Magnificent!!!

Hole - Boys On The Radio (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpBD-oynGwY&NR)

Another piece of Hole. Love this song and it's a cracking live version.

Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOCnDAwqWyg)

Dancing Jawas? WTF???

Neil Young - Heart Of Gold (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaBcAwVpDTI&mode=related&search=)

I believe this live version of Heart Of Gold was recorded at the BBC Studios in London. I saw the entire show on BBC3 a couple of years back (think i've got it on DVD somewhere) and it was stunning.

Neil Young - The Needle And The Damage Done (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwsJJAqMyfA)

From his MTV Unplugged session.

Pearl Jam - Rearviewmirror (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87V_6e7mBeA)

PJ kick the shit out of one of their best songs. A great live performance.

Bruce Springsteen - The River (Live 1979) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ychKUln_nLw)

One of my favorite Springsteen songs. A great live rendition.

Bruce Springsteen - Candy's Room (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0sujr3JSbs)

Picture quality ain't great but it's a great version of a classic Bruce choon.

Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA (live on his acoustic tour) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjzPlaseUJ4)

Totally different from the full band version that everyone is familiar with. Born In The USA gets a bluesy treatment here. Brilliant!!!

The Jesus & Mary Chain - Teenage Lust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6036OcPDPRc)

Rare video that's never seen the light of MTV (for reasons that will become obvious when you watch it...it's naughty). Unfortunately the picture quality is awful...it's been badly transferred from what was probably already a third genration bootleg on VHS.

Here come some more...

Willard Grant Conspiracy - From A Distant Shore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZw6G0vBxl4)

I don't know why this band aren't better known. They consistantly release albums full of majestic songs with the lushest arrangements but i've never once mentioned them to anyone and been greeted with anything less and a complete lack of recognition.

Malcolm Middleton - Loneliness Shines (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDXkPDziK5k)

Song by one half of Arab Strap.

The Spinto Band - Oh Mandy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1nDy1aS9oM)

Caught this song performed live at the Reading Festival on BBC yesterday. Catchy stuff.

Mark Lanegan Band - Wedding Dress (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmLRkYsCprw&mode=related&search=)

Great live rendition of a great song by a great man.

Some more good 'uns.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQVfOJMCECg&mode=related&search=)

Try playing spot the celeb with this video. See how many you can come up with. Fucking awesome video.

The National - Abel (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLBvObwubQk)

Raw, wired live rendition of this great song.

The National - Murder Me Rachel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_Y8eQNP6vE&mode=related&search=)

Another good one.

The National - Lit Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bopUriIKjY)

Last one.

The Walkmen - The Rat (Live On Letterman) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVGFgk1q4N0)

Nice one. Great band. Great song. Great live rendition.

Cool idea for a thread.. I like a lot of these videos.

I remember when I started a thread about 'this site I found' and Bubba and I shared a lot of videos we liked. That was more than 8 or 9 months ago and since then YouTube has exploded and unfortunately, many cool copyrighted performances have been removed.

SAI - the Sons and Daughters song is great. Psychocandy - I think the girl in the Horrors vid is Samantha Morton, not Emily Watson. Looking really sexy nonetheless.

Some of my favorites on YouTube. More later --

Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aNCBa5lrN8)

At an MTV Award show.. sounding great.

Pearl Jam - Betterman (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goiWcak1FXg)

From the 'Live at the Garden' DVD.

Tenacious D - Tribute (live on MadTV) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUvdhzbHT0Q)

This is not the greatest live performance in the world. This is just a tribute. Dave Grohl on drums.

Foo Fighters - Stairway to Heaven (live on Kilborn) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVKh-pVNDAM)

Fun cover.

Beasite Boys - Sabotage (live on Letterman) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iax5nhmPga8)

Old school Beastie Boys on old school Letterman.

And my favorite of all time --

B-52s - Rock Lobster (live on SNL) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZR9tmUy7HI)

Absolutely classic.

Psychocandy

Yeah...Samantha Morton. I'm a fucking cock. :D

Anyway...time for some Moz.

Morrissey - Still Ill (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRJP6_cg4kg)

A recent Morrissey performance of a The Smiths classic performed on a UK TV show. If anyone is interested I can also post links to the interview that preceded this.

Morrissey - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hreLgCCROb0)

Another classic from The Smiths days performed on Later...With Jools Holland on UK TV. I fucking love this version. Especially the way Moz just walks off as the song hits the closing stretch.

Morrissey - Suedehead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d44vsJV3Jno)

A rather squashed looking Morrissey & Co...again on Jools' show. Again brilliant.

Morrissey - November Spawned A Monster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d44vsJV3Jno)

Live at The Reading Festival...fuck knows what year. I would guess 2005 though. Fantastic stuff.

Here are vids by some bands currently being tipped for big things in 2006/2007.

The Sunshine Underground - Commercial Breakdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfoZomC6w0M)

New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EJCPp9zJh8)

The Young Knives - She's Attracted To (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5RhNbCMvYw)

The View - Wasted Little DJs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoY5X-dQq0M)

The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clhOnZRrmXc)

I quite like them all to varying degrees but I love Wasted Little DJs by The View.

Last one tonight...and it's a good 'un.

Franz Ferdinand - Lynsey Wells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNP2iuEDWws&mode=related&search=)

A bit of a departure for the Franz boys this one with their usual sound getting a big injection of celtic melody. One of my favorite Franz tunes.

'There is a Light That Never Goes Out' is one of the best songs ever. I didn't realize Morrissey performed so many Smiths songs solo. The live performance is excellent. Thanks. These lyrics --

"And in the darkened underpass
I thought oh god, my chance has come at last
(but then a strange fear gripped me and I
Just couldn’t ask)"

Stunning.

Another 'live on Jools' video --

Mazzy - Blue Flower (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLADeLrKZaw)

From her debut album. Gorgeous.

Lacquer - Behind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3A-unBigvoY)

An incredible time-lapse video directed by Michel Gondry of 'Eternal Sunshine..' fame.

Psychocandy

Shite...now that you've gone and mentioned Mazzy Star i'm gonna have to do this...

One of my favorite JAMC tunes.

Yeah...it's just wrong. I remember reading loads about it long before I actually saw it and I figured it couldn't possibly live up to what i'd read. It did. Chris Cunningham needs to get his shit together and do a feature length movie. There are rumours that he's trying to get an adaptation of William Gibson's Neuromancer off the ground. That would be so fucking cool.

A Perfect Circle; Judith (Live in France) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zzzh1lNpw6Y)
My favourite live performance of this song, mainly because its down to the presentation of the production on stage and its just a great all round song.

Tool; Stinkfist (Music Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNdsCbuTxq0)
Totally weird music video (then again, when are Tool music videos not weird), awesome song though, one of my favourites.

A Perfect Circle; Judith (Music Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23eZMdixAuk)
And because its my favourite song from this band heres the music video to it, directed by one David Fincher no less.

Cheers for the live version of Judith. I'm a big fan of both A Perfect Circle and Tool (although it's been a while since I last listened to either...a situation I plan to rectify). I have the Stinkfist video on the Salival DVD. Tool are truly artists when it comes to their videos. Disturbing and highly original.

Some great stuff there BCV.

REM - Radio Free Europe (Live On Letterman '83) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA57Pafq_NU)

REM's first US TV appearance on the Letterman Show in 1983. Dunno what's scarier...the amount of hair Letterman has or the amount of hair Stipe has.

REM - So. Central Rain (Live On Letterman '83) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ykp0Vq77IBw)

Another early classic preceded by a short chinwag with Letterman.

U2 - Running To Stand Still (Live In Sydney '93) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYHONQPIieA)

A fantastic live version. Just amazing!!!

U2 - Exit (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MbA3b2NwCE)

Was never too fond of the album version of this song...but this live version is fucking awesome.

Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw-imqLiFMo)

One of Springsteen's best tunes performed for MTV.

Bruce Springsteen - Spare Parts (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO9UhqgIMFo)

Another great Springsteen tune from his underrated Tunnel Of Love album.

Sonic Youth - Sunday (Live On Letterman) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLR9ajmBzkQ)

A chaotic mess of feedback, pop hooks and attitude. And a video to match.

The Jesus & Mary Chain - On The Wall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yrWG_s5suk&mode=related&search=)

The video for Nine Inch Nails Happiness In Slavery with the Mary Chain's On The Wall dubbed over the top. Interesting and it's a mighty fucked up video whatever is playing over the top.

Nine Inch Nails - Happiness In Slavery (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5akw3rUSMV8)

Here's the original with the magnificent, pummelling Nine Inch Nails track over the top.

Nine Inch Nails - Hurt (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpPSn9ES2No&mode=related&search=)

A magnificent live performance stripped down to only a piano and Reznor's voice.

Johnny Cash - Hurt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVQKbV1OzyQ)

The stunning Johnny Cash video for his cover of NIN's Hurt. Heartbreaking.

Another great Cash cover version.

Johnny Cash - Drive On (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPNt6W86aIA&mode=related&search=)

Average video quality but an awesome live version of this Nick Cave penned masterpiece.

PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48GIaN7SrGU&mode=related&search=)

Astonishing, raw live performance of this older PJ classic.

Hummingbirds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59DUzPliz0k)

I love how this music is set to old people dancing in slow motion, it's such a cute video.

Cover of I Feel Love with Blue Man Group (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5-ClvcHtK4)

Speaking of Blue Man Group, here's them doing their version of The Who's Baba O'Riley on America's Got Talent. This is a hard song to cover, and I thought it was very well done. The singer/violinist did a good job.
Baba O'Riley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ldxg87pDlI8)

Okay this first one isn't on You Tube but it's just so nutty I'm loving it

The Hazzards: Shut Up and Make Out
Sydney(Dark hair) plays the Ukelele and Anne (Blonde) play keyboard and sings on this jaunty, funny pop tune. Gay Boyfriend is also really fun but sadly it's sung by Sydney whose voice is almost atonal.
http://www.ezarchive.com/micki/AlbumSpace/7HL8B022Y8/shutup.mov

Peter, Bjorn and John (feat. Victoria Bergsman): Young Folks
The best whistling on a record since (Sitting on the) Dock of the Bay. It's a great slice of indie pop from sweeden with one of the best animated videos in a long time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48hcp-zDpg4

Aimee Mann: That's Just What You Are
I'm With Stupid may be Aimee's least accomplished album but this is perhaps her best song. An unsung pop classic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQo6slWZiwA

Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories: Stay (I Missed You)
Still as good as the first time I heard it, more than 10 years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ka9mCmx9Jhs

Madonna: Like A Prayer (live at Live 8)
My favourite Madonna record (well, most days) and one she perfomed absolutely brilliantly at Live 8, one of the highlights of the day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1LG3B8i9jc

Edit... Okay, thought of more bits to add

Moloko: Forever More
This was playing as I was browsing in a record shop lately. I didn't like Moloko at the time but they had some insanely good singles and Roisin Murphy has a very sexy voice indeed (and, it has to be said, looks rather delectable here).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfo1878wd60

Portishead: Over (Live) / Glory Box (Live)
Beth Gibbons' voice is one of the most moving instruments in modern music, it's a crying shame that the third album seems to be being held up.
Over: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzananVefh0
Glory Box: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imrfo-uRjcE

Tori Amos: Me and a Gun (live)
An intense performance of Tori's acapella song about her own rape. It's one of the most emotional songs I've heard, almost always makes me cry and the delivery here is astounding.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3_6709tNJc

The Pipettes: Pull Shapes
A stand out single from a hugely enjoyable pop album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsvKJ65-TlM

The Black Keys: Thickfreakness / 10am Automatic
Turn the sound up LOUD for these vids from the loudest purveyours of blues riffs since AC/DC.
Thickfreakness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfgi3qToT-4
10am Automatic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dZjQohOobM

Okay that really is enough, lunch calls.

Both great clips.

I saw Tim dancing in the flesh, and it's tough to forget...yessir, he can boogie!

You beat me to it with Jarvis and Ali G...priceless clip, and much respect to Cocker for allowing himself to be called a kiddie fiddler!

No. I saw them live three times. Once when they were touring Automatic. Once when they toured Honey's Dead. And finally when they toured Munki. I somehow managed to miss them on the Stoned And Dethroned Tour (boo hiss). I do have an MP3 of an awesome live version somewhere with both Jim and Hope in great voice. I'll try to track it down and post it in the appropriate thread.

No problem! I'm a huge fan of A Perfect Circle and Tool myself, it sucks that they wait years upon years until they release anything new from either band but they're forgiven for that as they're awesome. Maynard James Keenan is a musical/vocal genius.

The Cardigans
I love The Cardigans, one of my favourite pop bands so here's a selection their vids.
I Need Some Fine Wine & You, You Need To Be Nicer: Marvellously titled single from their most recent (and rather disappointing) album Super Extra Gravity with a vid the features Nina looking particularly lovely.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlHNh1Oj7TU

Been It: An excellent, unsung, piece of pop from First Band on the Moon, overshadowed by the fact that Lovefool was a massive hit. This is better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRz-ZCqalDc

Erase/Rewind: One of the highlight of their best album; Gran Tourismo which brought a colder edge to their sound and the best out of Nina's voice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex2E4vyGem0

Lovefool (Live): A rendition from 1997 for MTV of their best known track
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmjkGowI-QY

THIS is what pop music ought to sound like. Brilliantly produced, sweetly sung and catchier than the common cold at a retreat for the immuno-suppressed. Here's two vids.
Chewing Gum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYyhFl0bxss
Heartbeat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1FHLOOlUfM

Metric's Live It Out is one of my album's of the year so far and I'm desperate to get the first album; Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? Here's vids from both.
Dead Disco: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUcn0hDpZWA

I saw this band open for Goldfrapp, their everything and the kitchen sink set was wonderful and the album is consistently fascinating.
This isn't on Youtbe, go to the link for the vids and watch Repeat To Fade and Is It Any Wonder.
http://www.theshortwaveset.com/sounds.html

Carla Bruni: Quelqu'Un M'A Dit
As the debut record by an ex-model this should, by rights, be awful overproduced pop. It's not. Bruni's album is a beautifully sung, self penned and played affair that mostly focuses on just her vocals and a guitar and this title track is a good indicator of the album. I HIGHLY recommend it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsUlSvtziXU

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins: The Charging Sky/ Rise Up With Fists (Live)
High quality, beautifully performed, versions of the highlights of Lewis' stunning solo debut.
Charging Sky: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0C-rb2F5ws
Rise Up With Fists: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otwbvZsEWZY

Isobel Campbell/Mark Lanegan: Ramblin' Man
A contender for single of the year; a sleazed up Hank Williams cover with an NSFW vid to match.

Kate Bush
To finish on for today some vids from one of my very favourite artists. Mad as a box of frogs she may be but she's one of THE great talents in pop music... ever.
Wow: WOW indeed.

James McMurtry - We Can't Make It Here Any More (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTW0y6kazWM&mode=related&search=)

Just discovered this guy. This is a great song that sounds a bit like what you would get if you crossed Steve Earle with Tom Petty. So if you like either one of those two purveyors of American singer/songwriter excellence then I sugges you check this out.

Liz Phair - Stratford-On-Guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSP-zBYon4E)

"And I was pretending that I was in a Galaxie 500 video."

Cool chick...what the fuck happened to her?

Throwing Muses - Counting Backwards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZoS5CEloCo)

From their stunning The Real Ramona album that everyone including The Pope should own and love or suffer eternal damnation.

Throwing Muses - Ellen West (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWudbYuhKHA)

"My mouth is full of demons / I swear to god."

Another example of why Throwing Muses were just fucking amazing.

Throwing Muses - Hook In Her Head (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_1W8RDUGOE&mode=related&search=)

It's the discovery of live gems like this that make YouTube such a cool idea.

Kristin Hersh - A Loon (Strings Version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AMyc1DlDe4)

This is just gorgeous. Krinstin Hersh is such a talented lady and it's a shame she's not more prolific.

Bob Mould - See A Little Light (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTaIWHBMfUQ)

Great solo track from the Husker Du/Sugar dude.

Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHyxdMWJC-4&mode=related&search=)

Gorgeous jangle pop from Bob Mould's magnificent Sugar.

Buffalo Tom - I'm Allowed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZmreUdbKo0)

This band released a couple of albums in the nineties that were among the best that decade had to offer. Seriously. Let Me Come Over and Big Red Letter Day are just stunning.

House Of Love - I Don't Know Why I Love You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT9qZaLbcP8&mode=related&search=)

These guys were mentioned in the same breath as The Smiths for a while but never really lived up to that particular piece of journalistic hyperbole. This is a great song though.
Listening to this is to understand the power of music. Fucking magnificent. The strings remind me of some Velvet Underground stuff.

Psychocandy, thanks for the recommendation of Liz Phair, as ever your taste proves spot on.

Here's another band that our esteemed mod put me on to.

The Mountain Goats
Dance Music: Brilliant home made vid made with sock puppets for one of the highlights of The Sunset Tree
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddxbQbqjHhw

This Year: The real vid for another great track from The Sunset Tree
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYCzDhaRV60

Muse
Hysteria: My favourite bass riff of recent times, hell, one of my favourite songs of recent times. Here's first a live version and second the vid, one of the best and most intense I've ever seen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUYnw1-fSmM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VRu6dWYvVE

Kings of Leon
I really like KOL, despite their nicking just about every move they make from the 70's. I really hope the third album isn't too far off but meanwhile here's some good stuff from the first two
Four Kicks (Live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVBlZFvp5w8
Mollys Chambers:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9boAsEmXmo

Be Your Own PET
Damn Damn Leash: First single from the terrifyingly young, massively noisy, high-schoolers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-aweGRRzUE

Bicycle Bicycle You Are My Bicycle: Mosre polished, very funny, vid for the third single from BYOP's self titled debut album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1FNd5ZS0Kk

Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan
I think the billing is always the wrong way round here. Rice is clearly talented but Lisa Hannigan has a truly special voice and blows him out of the water every time you hear them. This is the full video of their 8 song KCRW session.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH5Ulp4bxCY

Tapes N Tapes
Insistor: Music bloggers had been tlaking this group up for a while but it took seeing this vid on MTV2 for me to get interested in Tapes N Tapes, one of my favourrite singles of 2006 so far.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5g2eUh7TWE

Air
Great chillout music

Playground Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLnrXNXO1FE
Sexy Boy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S49USY0uOsQ

That'll do for now.

Edit: One more

Fiona Apple: Across the Universe
British music mag The Word named this as the best cover version ever, even saying it's better than the original. I don't really agree with that but it is a stunning record, beautifully delivered by Apple and with a teriffic vid by her then boyfriend Paul Thomas Anderson.

Fiona Apple
I love Fiona, I put one of her tracks at the end of my last post but here's a selection of her original songs.

Criminal: An NSFW vid by Mark Romanek for the debut single that won instant paludits and stirred controversy when Fiona, picking up an MTV award complained about how music is sold through people's image.
Perhaps the vid that featured her lying around in little more than her undies and singing 'I've been a bad bad girl' wasn't the one to make that point with
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJhoIRR_xZI

Limp: A great vid by then boyfriend Paul Thomas Anderson for the lead single from second alum When The Pawn... It's worth noting that, cute as she's always been, Fiona looks particularly great through PTA's lens.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ue17VmCPgBs

O Sailor: The vid for one of the standout tracks from long delayed third album Extraordinary Machine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-0TE0qXUgk

Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians: What I Am
One of my favourite pop records. It was, a few years ago, massacred by a hideous cover version by one the Spice Girls, here's the brilliant original.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7vpIrJ4xms

Cocteau Twins
I'm just discovering this band and loving every second of it. Liz Fraser's voice is something truly special and the fact that she seldom uses actual words as lyrics only allows you to focus more on the extraordinary sound she can make.

Bluebeard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ8SvWv8yak
Evangeline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk_0bGC4Wl0

Massive Attack
Teardrop: Featuring Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins on vocals (one of my favourite vocal performances ever) It also happens to have one of the greatest videos of all time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfp45lGemWc

Karmacoma: A brilliant chilled rap track with an excellent guest performance from Tricky.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGwcz_DzyyI

Bright Eyes
First Day of My Life: I hope this video is, in fact, just what it looks like; a collection of unreheased reactions to a great and touching love song. However even if the people in it are actor this is one of the most affecting vids made in a long time and a great companion to the record.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD9n6hdI2p8

Easy/Lucky/Free: Another very simple, very striking vid. This for a single from Digital Ash in a Digital Urn.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7xtiRrthlo

Kasabian: Shoot The Runner
An excellent, and very expensive looking, vid for the second single from Empire. They're clearly not afraid of comparison to their glam heroes, particularly with the explicit reference to Bowie's Queen Bitch.

It's a good song but ah those people falling down so seriously ruined that great mood built up by walking into an overconditioned, brightened, symmetrical consumer center at night. Music videos shouldn't try to make the viewer think -- it's hard to simultaneously interpret the image and listen to the song (unless it's blatant like America We Stand As One (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmGFVLZC3os))

My old housemates made a video a couple of weeks back.

The frontman is moustache connoiseur Jamesie, and the dude with tights/pantyhose on his noggin is Damien. Back-up dancing is provided by Damo's girlfriend Vicki and Tresesan...they are hot laydeez.

This was made by other old housemate German Martin, star of Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly video.

I saw The Gossip when they supported Sons And Daughters in Glasgow last year. Although the album is great it's somewhat diluted when set next to the live experience. Her voice just fills the room and I love the down and dirty rock sound they employ too. It was great to see them on Jonathan Ross a few weeks back. That's the sort of mainstream exposure that bands like this need.

So beautiful. I can't decide if I like this better with the joyous instrumentation or this quiet acoustic. I think the quiet acoustic fits the lyrical content a lot more though...and when transformed into a quieter song the beauty of the melody becomes even more apparent. This has got to be near the top of my favorite songs of 2006 in any case...it was a great song before but then when I actually listened to the lyrics more closely, I just realized how much more powerful and poignant the song was despite its seemingly upbeat feel...

Haven't done this in a while... Here's a sampling of what I'm playing at the moment.

Cowboy Junkies
Margo Timmins' voice is one of the most beautiful I know in pop music. I'm hoping to see them on their 20th anniversary tour at Union Chapel London in March. It'd be amazing to hear them play in a setting like that.
ANGEL MINE: MV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqPC80C2PYY
SWEET JANE: MV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHRFZFmEq9o
A COMMON DISASTER: Live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqPC80C2PYY

Mazzy Star
One of many new discoveries for which I must thank Psychocandy. He linked me to this band and I immediately flipped for them. If you've not heard them then think Cowboy Junkies mating with My Bloody Valentine and you're pretty close.
BLUE FLOWER: Live on Later: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLADeLrKZaw
FADE INTO YOU:Live MTV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeFYdShz7Tk

Seasick Steve
A bluesman with a three stringed guitar he bought in a thrift shop who impressed the hell out of me by stealing the show at Jools Holland's Hootenanny this year (even from the ever brilliant Zutons). I've included the solo Hootenanny performance and one track with his backing band.
CHEAP: MV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVjYuZlgpoE
DOGHOUSE BOOGIE: Hootenanny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ujm7UshfVk0

The Cardigans
Posting about Nina Persson got me freshly into perhaps my very favourite pop band, and certainly Nina is among the best vocalists in pop. Choosing favourites from a career that spans 15 years and 6 great albums is tough... but here's a few.
ERASE/REWIND: Live MTV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2iC5UlfR8w
YOU'RE THE STORM: MV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qviDXg4sSLI
COMMUNICATION: Live at the Nobel Peace Pirze concert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VCAkDhuPrA

Saint Etienne
I was aware of Saint Etienne through their big hit 'He's On The Phone' which came out in '95 when I was watching top of the pops as a matter of course. They passed me by at the time, not sure why, but Sarah Cracknell's lovely voice and the abundance of pop hooks has made me investigate them recently, and I'm loving what I hear. Pure pop at it's best.
HE'S ON THE PHONE: MV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOk3EAPSvBo
ONLY LOVE CAN BREAK YOUR HEART (Feat Moira Lambert on vocals): MV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq0u4rD_M1I

edit
I'm a moron... I forgot one of the main reasons I made this post to start with...

Charlotte Hatherly
I love Ash, I did from the start (Girl From Mars still sounds amazing) but they were so much better with the beefed up guitar sound that Hatherly brought. Her first solo record; Grey Will Fade was well recieved critically in 2005 and a really strong debut, but wasn't a hit. Her second is out on her own label in March and Behave, the first single, sounds great and the vid is my tip for the best of 2007... yes, already.
BEHAVE: MV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUQL5pwUCAY

Okay so imagine these lyrics:

In this farewell There’s no blood
There’s no alibi ‘Cause I’ve drawn regret
From the truth Of a thousand lies

So let mercy come And wash away
What I’ve done

I’ve faced myself
To cross out what I’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what I’ve done

Put to rest What you thought of me
Well I cleaned this slate With the hands
Of uncertainty

So let mercy come
And wash away
What I’ve done

I’ve faced myself
To cross out what I’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what I’ve done

For what I’ve done
I’ll start again
And whatever pain may come
Today this ends
I’m forgiving what I’ve done

I’ve faced myself
To cross out what I’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what I’ve done

What I’ve done
Forgiving what I’ve done

sang by some spidery douchebag, plastered over all the history snagged on video (or you could argue it is history because it was caught on tape). There are historical figures, destruction, and some polar bears. What do we have? What are the implications? THE IMPLICATIONS?

This spidery douchebag is on about "what he's done" and forgiveness...these are all clips from history, or history from clips....there must be some connection, gee, because I cannot comprehend their pairing. Is..is he suggesting in some way that his personal anguish (or manufactured anguish) is in some way tied to the machinations of history? You know, history keeps on a-rollin' without you and your pain? Is this video, this "Linkin Park" video, actually a statement about how one's personal strife does not amount to more than a hill of beans in the face of all the history conveniently recorded (they forgot JFK's assassination)?

Or...

Is it some overheated douchebag's attempt at relevancy by way of alluding to what's relevant and riding that relevancy all the way to end of the video?

And where's the fucking hook? This is popular? The chorus is basically the dude saying "what i've done" in normal speak but holding on to the "done" for a bit longer.

Mint Royale Featuring Lauren Laverne: Don't Falter
http://www.gorgeousmag.co.uk/resources/images/autonumbered/e/1/0/e10fed5d-130d-478f-aad1-7f3aaf682866.jpg
A single I flipped for when it came out back in 200 and re-discovered today when I found my copy while cleaning my place. It's still an excellent track, still catchy as the common cold and Lauren Laverne is cuteness itself in the vid.

Roisin Murphy: Overpowered
http://www.superdeluxe.ch/images/100.jpg
Despite having (belatedly) discovered Moloko in the last couple of years, and being rather in love with her enormously sexy voice I've never really warmed to Roisin Murphy's first solo album. However this title track from her second is much more accessible, an immediate, danceable slice of summer that ought to be a huge hit.

Au Revoir Simone
http://a65.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/21/l_9da3a7a597a28e98b0cf8159908bcd50.jpg
As my best mate observed 'Sam likes band composed of three pretty girls with keyboards... what a surprise'. Yeah, okay, it's pretty obvious for me but Annie, Erika and Heather's triple keyboard action (as their myspace would have it) results in strong songs, beautifully supported by three lovely voices.

Bat For Lashes: What's A Girl To Do?
http://www.exclaim.ca/images/bat_for_lashes.jpg
If Glasgow is currently the best city in Scotland for music then Brighton is its English counterpart and Bat For Lashes are just the latest interesting band to emerge from there.
This is much more interesting than the pretty, but rather personality free, previous single. The video is also excellent, kind of creepy, but also very funny.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1wnOUH2jk8

Cocorosie: Rainbowarriors
http://podcasts.portlandmercury.com/files/2006/08/20060130173659_cocorosie_jn.jpg
I couldn't get along with Cocorosie's last album; Noah's Ark... I believe I described it as Kate Bush, as sung by a cat on helium. This first single from new album The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn ditches most of the wilfully distancing madness and concentrates on an almost rapped vocal over a strong beat. It's nakedly political, but it's a great song first, a message second. Oh and Bianca is troublingly sexy in the vid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMLyACxay3E

The Go! Team: Grip Like A Vice
http://www.hecklerspray.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/TheGoTeam4.jpg
This first single from their new album suggests hat the brighton based six piece haven't altered the sample heavy sound of their debut all that much and it's as engaging as ever.

I'm listening to it now and it is indeed great. Cortez the Killer is just an amazing song that was built to be covered in an amazing way. Neil Young is a genius.

I think the DMB version is solid gold because at one point Dave actually turns to Carter Beauford and says "He's bad", talking about Warren Haynes. Great times.

Discovered these guys on a blog this very morning and already I'm hugely impressed. Their indie-dance sound is as now as you can get and fits right alongside bands like Holy Hail, New Young Pony Club and Dragonette.
The two vocalists thing works well with Lisa and Scott playing off each other beautifully, the songs are often funny as well as being sharply written and danceable and the vids, thanks mainly to Lisa, drip sex.

Just a couple today

Sons and Daughters
http://www.sonsanddaughtersloveyou.com/images/photos/big138.jpg
One of the first of the current wave of amazing bands coming out of Glasgow. S and D are about to release (in January) their second full length album, titled This Gift, but the single is already on the radio and online. Gilt Complex isn't a million miles from their established sound, but nor is it the sound of a band treading water. It's a vital, catchy single and grows on me every time I hear it.
GILT COMPLEX: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvGxzg7-GQo

The Royal We
http://a961.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/30/l_a317d23000fa9d0e337c0195ae606770.jpg
I'd never heard of these guys before last night when I saw the vid for their single All The Rage on MTV 2's excellent 120 Minutes and so I'd no idea until checking their myspace just now that they too are a Glasgow band, signed to Domino Records just like Sons and Daughters. It takes a little while to get going, but evolves into a compelling bit of indie-punk.

Been a while since this was updated so here's someone I discovered just this morning.

Sara Berg
More brilliant electronica from sweden; Think The Knife, Royksopp, Sally Shapiro. Berg's second album When I Was A Young Child I Used To Feel Pleasure From Playing With Others has just been released in the UK. Here's some vids and a link to her myspace (make sure you go there and listen to This Can't Be Desire).

Couple of random bits and bobs

Glasvegas
The hottest unsigned band in the UK and, what a fucking shock, they're from Glasgow. This is epic stuff, BIG songs, a wall of sound and yet it seems personal and intimate. Great stuff.
Daddy's Gone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uSdQxKaBfU

The Kills
Even by The Kills usual none more spartan standards this first single from their third album (titled Midnight Boom) is stripped down to its barest essentials. It's not the immediate grabber that the, comparably, poppier The Good Ones was, but it's growing on me with each play.

http://www.josaka.com/images/2007/Jail-Guitar-Doors/Laura-Marling-web.jpg
While the likes of Kate Nash, Lily Allen and Adele have got themselves acres of press for their, frankly, uninspiring music 18 year old singer-songwriter Laura Marling has been quietly releasing literate, amusing and touching songs for a little while now. Her debut album; Alas I Cannot Swim came out on Monday and from the singles sounds like a confident debut in the mould of an Aimee Mann. There's a lot of promise here.

Like much of the dance scene at the moment Neon Neon are drawing on the early 80's for their influences and this dreamy single is one of the best pop records I've heard this year.

The first single from Portishead's long awaited third album is going to put a lot of people off. Machine Gun is nothing like their previous records. It's a dark, industrial sounding piece of dance music, most remeniscent of Aphex Twin. Of course this is still leavened by Beth Gibbons' still awe inspiring voice, but if theres a hit on Third Machine Gun is definitely not it.

Junkie XL Feat Lauren Rocket: Fuck More (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmRJ9Z8uE_w)
http://www.undergroundmixes.com/images/links/icon_junkiexl.jpg
I caught this on 120 minutes Banned special (which, puzzlingly, played a lot of edited vids, even though it was on at 1am). My only other exposure to JXL was through his Elvis remix, which went to number one here. This is much more interesting. It's got a harsh sound, but the hook is an immediate grabber and I imagine it would sond fucking brilliant played LOUD in a club. The vid, as you'd probably expect, is MASSIVELY NSFW.

The Joy Formidable
http://a843.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/65/l_528266e84667f2f689068a927e92b5e2.jpg
This London band, being championed by Steve Lamaq and Tom Robinson on BBC 6 Music, were another that I discovered, purely on the basis of thinking they had a cool name, through blog aggregator The Hype Machine. Austere is especially recommended, so I've included a live version here, as well as the band's myspace, which features the studio version, as well as 3 more tracks.

So it seems that it's not just Glasgow that's currently churning out interesting guitar wielding indie bands, this Edinburgh four piece are also getting in on the act. They grabbed me from the opening seconds of the first track I heard, but especially once the vocal kicked in with classic first line 'She's gonna find him / and fuck him'. They've got a bass and drum heavy post-punk sound which crafts simple, but catchy, songs.

The first music I heard from this Salford based two-piece was live and demo versions of a few of the tracks that will make up their debut albu; We Started Nothing, due in May, and didn't represent the band at their best.
Cleaned up and given the studio sheen their blast of simple but insistent indie disco is actually pretty refreshing.

Robyn: Who's That Girl? (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UYomJbEZG54)
http://www.exclaim.ca/images/click_robyn.jpg
Robyn's latest single was produced by Swedish electroclash wizards The Knife, and wouldn't sound out of place, had Karin Deijer Andersson sung it, on their Deep Cuts album. The track is positively ancient at this point, but it still sounds absolutely now and the vid is brand new.

Britney Spears: Break The Ice (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4DdCFczrodc)
I may die of shame for posting this... but I can't deny that of the three challengers for the queen of pop crown... Madonna, Kylie and Britney herself, who all have singles out at the moment, it's miss Spears who has come out on top. This anime video, which looks like something out of a Satoshi Kon or Mamoru Oshii film at times, is good enough on it's own, but it's actually married to a solid pop record too. Having written (and meant) that sentence it has become clear to me that nothing in life makes sense anymore... down may actually be up for all I know. Seriously though, check the vid out.

Another brilliant track from my favourite band of the moment, this the title track of their stormingly brilliant second full length album. I'm going to KEEP pimping S and D until all of you are converted.

Magic Wands
An American electro-pop two piece who, in an oh so modern touch, met on Myspace. They sound a bit like MGMT, but with a girl sharing the vocal duties on Black Magic, before going a bit Blondie for the more mainstream poppy sound of Teenage Love.

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=104443026&albumID=0&imageID=278776
With these tracks Honey is Cool suggest more explicitly the sound that Karin Dreijer Andersson currently makes with her brother Olof in The Knife. On The Lion they preempt the propulsive sound of the bulk of the Deep Cuts album, while Waiting for a Friend suggests the gentler moments of The Knife; think Pass This On.

Enjoy.

http://images.teamsugar.com/files/upl0/1/13839/10_2008/81.preview.jpg
The first taste of the indie popper's next album is something of a surprise, a chart bound piece of synth pop that seems tailor made to be a breakout hit. It will be interesting to see if the album takes them consistenttly in this direction or if Beat Control will stick out like a sore thumb. Eiether way; great pop record.

I saw Asteroids singer Mette on Never Mind the Buzzcocks this week, and the brief clip of the video played in her introduction looked like a lot of fun, and so it proves. The bands blend of brass heavy soul sounds and dancey keyboards sounds irresistibly retro and fun and Mette's cutely accented voice (she reminds me a bit of Love is All's Josephine Ollausson) powers the vocal along nicely. Dawn Landes
http://thelastsemester.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/dawn_landes_0920.jpg
I first heard of this 24 year old from Louisville through her youtube hit, a bluegrass cover of Young Folks, which inspired me to buy her rather wonderful mini-album Two, Three, Four. Since then she's made two full length albums, and the track I saw on 120, Bodyguard suggests that though she's not straying far from her country roots she's adding a little pop sinsibility to the mix to strong effect.

The Do
http://www.lehameau.fr/do/my3.jpg
Comprising Dan Levy, a multi-instrumentalist from Paris and Finnish singer Olivia Merilahti, The Do seem to produce extremely eclectic music, if their myspace is anything to go by. Stay Just a Little Bit More sounds like Bjork playing toy instruments, while At Last weds Olivia's vocal to a simple electric guitar riff. On My Shoulders is the real knockout though, there's a cracked beauty to Olivia's breathy delivery and Dan Levy's music is intricate, but blessed with several insistent hooks. I'm looking forward to hearing more from The Do. You can watch vids for At Last and On My Shoulders at the link, as well as hearing another 3 tracks.
