It looks great and it looks like a really great showcase for Maggie Gyllenhaal. Too bad I'll probably won't be able to see it until it comes to dvd. :(

yeah it doesn't look like something that will do well in theaters but the storyline looks interesting. I can't really imagine Maggie in jail though, haha

If IFC plays their cards right, we could see Gyllenhaal get showered with awards in a few months. Plus, more exposure through WTC certainly won't hurt.
I like her a lot. Better than her brother, I think.

Man, another drugged out mom gets out of jail and attempts to reclaim (and yer supposed ta chortle and remain aghast at all the obstacles thrown her way) her daughter. What could they possibly squeeze out of this dramatic setup? Oliver Assayas had Maggie Chueng walking around self-indulgently to Eno, and an ace Nick Nolte. What does Sherrybaby director have?
The trailer is boring, and I wish more American indies aimed for something different, more tinkering with form (like Jarmusch or Van Sant) then slogging out these urban dramas (because they want to make a good, serious movie and have no money). The casting of Gyllenhaal surely must be the key, because whatever she brings to the role can only be the distinguisher. Then, I am judging off of the trailer, which can be troublesome or can be an indicator of what to expect -- usually the former.

Sherrybaby - 4/10
For a film that features a substance abuse meeting and the subsequent twelve steps, this sure takes the predictable indie mold of "twelve steps until our unlikeable female lead learns to reform" manifesto. Maggie Gyllenhaal tries, she really does, to make this character work, but too often the director goes for an easy display of emotional pyrotechnics -- see Sherry slam a cabinet door again and again. See Sherry scream like a Tourettes victim right in front of her child. See Sherry coo and coddle incessantly over said child, right in front of her understandably nervous relations. And, so on.

I heard this was very sexually explicit, and if it was rated, it would be NC-17. Is that true?

I've seen more depraved examples (Happiness, for example), so I don't know why it would be unrated. There is one scene where a guy is taking her from behind, but Todd Solondz and Larry Clark films are far worse in that aspect. Don't know why this one would be rated NC-17.
For anyone who knows anybody like Sherry, this should hit close to home. Very honest, real filmaking. Well done, 9/10
