View Full Version : Mickey Rourke is a Douchebag

I don't think God makes people any douchier than Mickey Rourke. If he weren't a giant muscle-bound lummux who could probably kick my ass, I'd punch his once-beautiful face.
Really, this guy is such a douchebag that he actually defended John Gotti at his trial (a lot of good it did Gotti). He even tried hanging out with Tupac to enhance his already phony-badass image.
Now I know a lot of you are going to say something like "BUT BRANDO HE WAS IN SIN CITY LOL!!!!!!111111111111111"...big deal, he was in Diner too, and I still hate him.
Wow, I really don't like Mickey Rourke.

I suppose I would be all for it if we were allowed to line up and kick Rourke one time. But just once. Each.

Didn't mind him in Sin City, but he really got on my nerves in Stormbreaker, (I think it's called summat like "Operation Stormbreaker" in the US.) It was him and the stupid kid who can't act in the main role who spoilt that movie for me. And annoyingly it's those two who get most of the screen time, shunting aside those who actually can act like Bill Nighy, Ewan McGregor, Stephen Fry, Robbie Coltrane etc, all of whom appear for less than five minutes each, apart from Nighy, who doesn't get much screen time anyway.
Anyway, I've turned this into a bit of a Stormbreaker rant instead, but I don't really have an opinion on the whole Rourke thing. Rather makes you wonder why I bothered to post, doesn't it? Well I was bored. Sorry to waste your time :p

I don't know a lot about American history, but Gotti was one of the REALLY nasty gangsters, yes?

My understanding is he wasn't a REALLY nasty gangster, just a nasty gangster. I mean he was a boss who ordered lots of murders and so on (as they do) but nothing I've read gives him exceptional nastiness, unlike say the infamous 'Iceman' who once fed a victim to rats while he was still alive and videotaped it.
He IS however one of the more famous (or rather infamous) ones, as he was one of the few bosses who embraced the publicity rather than shy away from it, hence more people know about Gotti than say, Carlo Gambino.
Not saying he was a nice guy, though.
As for Mickey Rourke, well, what can I say. I'm generally unconcerned about celebrities' personal lives, it's thier talent that counts. Yeah it's sort of coolwhen they are actually hard nuts offscreen (Vinnie Jones, John Wayne fighting Sinatra's bodygaurds, etc.) but so long as they're onscreen and they're convincing, well, I don't care really.

Rourkes a good actor but he's a scummy loon in real life
John Amos (The dad from Good Times) really lost a lot of respect from me when he was on tv during the Gotti trial and spouted off hw much of a hero Gotti was.
Its no different than asswadd Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte licking Castros balls. These people are insane

Rouke's been in some films I really enoyed - Barfly, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, Johnny Handsome, 9 1/2 weeks, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Spun....
I'm not sure he's the kind of guy I'd want to go camping with for the weekend, though.
Brando - Is there anything more specific about why you hate him, or just the Gotti thing --- I didn't even know about that.

It's mostly the Gotti thing, but there's a lot of things I don't like about him. Just look at his IMDB profile.

Actually, I remember reading an article about some of the lesser known things Gotti did and they were pretty sick. I mean he wasn't like the "Iceman" or anything but you have to be pretty sick to do some of the things he did. He even had his own graveyard.

Like everyone, Mickey Rourke has made his share of mistakes. In Rourke's case, his mistakes were so public and so extreme that it took him most of the 90's to convince people all over again of who he really is: one of the most talented and engaging tough-guy actors in modern-day cinema.
I'm frankly sick and tired of people bashing the guy. Forget all the jokes about his plastic surgery (which, by the way, is not cosmetic; it's a result of his boxing injuries). In the past five years, Rourke has consistently been his own toughest critic. In interview after interview, he has recognized his faults both major and minor and expressed nothing but sincere gratitude for being allowed to work again.
He's been through some shit, for sure, and now that he's found his redemption I'm not going to kick it from his hands. I'm going to root for him like I always have (long, long before the release of "Sin City"). I'm in his corner till the end, and I can't wait to see what he does next.
For the uninitiated, I've included a link below to a comprehensive biography of Rourke on Wikipedia, as well as a lengthy write-up on the man courtesy of Cosmik Debris.

Good actor, but defending John Gotti is pretty terrible.
That being said, fuck John Gotti and his metrosexual, wannabe gangster grandchildren.

Oh man - I'd like to take both those magaffer looking Gotti punks and bash their usesless heads together...they both look more queer than the cast of Queer Eye

Well a lot of you have acknowledged that the man is talented, which he is, don't get my wrong. I thought he was great in Diner and 9 1/2 Weeks, so I was really disappointed when I saw him on T.V. defending that evil, murdering motherfucker.

It's funny how these high-profile gangsters like Gotti would have the dankiest looking wives ever, yet, they would make up for them by having dozens of mistresses.

He's always been a bit of a melon. One of many reasons I love this place: lots of Schmoes can really turn a phrase :D
I used to love The Mick and I defended him in a lot of arguments, but he's pissed away a lot of his once brilliantly promising career.

Rourke didn't waste all of his potential. He's still got some left in the tank, and if he continues to work with guys like Robert Rodriguez and Tony Scott, I really think his best roles are yet to come.

Yeah, and ceasing to be an asshole might also give his career a bit of a boost.

Rourke's definitely made a few mistakes/enemies in the past 20 years. He was kind of the Colin Farell of the 1980's. A much better actor though, and he surely had a string of better movies. At his peak were greats such as:
Angel Heart
A Prayer for the Dying
Pope of Greenwich Village
Barfly
Desperate Hours
Year of the Dragon
Low points, due mostly to the fact that he was "tough" to work with are:
Homeboy
Johnnie Handsome
Harley Davison and the Marlboro Man
Hopefully he's changed his ways and Sin City is a sign of what's to come.

From the looks of the new "Killshot" trailer, there are only good things to come for Rourke and his career. Check out the trailer here:

I don't care how he is as a person. He could be a good guy or he could be a total asshole. I don't care. All I care is what he does on screen. And I loved him personally in Domino. He was such a total badass in that movie!
And Killshot looks really good too!

the man's not so much an asshole as he is utterly psychotic. i mean, we're talking about a guy who cut off part of his pinky finger because he felt it was an "unnecessary appendage." he's batshit, pure and simple. brilliant, but batshit.
