I was under the impression before I saw this trailer that this would be more dramatic fare than another epic martial arts movie...in any case, I hope it's the former rather than the latter (and they could just be trying to sell it as a martial arts film in North America)...loved Hero, not a big fan of House of Flying Daggers, but in this case I'd just like to see more of a historical epic with a little bit of martial arts thrown in.
In any case this looks great (as does Zhang Yimou's other, more low-key drama coming out, Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles - I was gonna buy this in Toronto but the copy I was gonna get didn't have English subs so...bah)...
Monkeypeaches also said that they changed the name to Curse of the Golden Flower from advice from Focus Features...which surprises me cause personally I think the original title was a hell of a lot better (The City of Golden Armor)...maybe they just thought that it'd be too confusing changing the spelling of Armor/Armour depending on the country?
But man, it looks like Zhang Yimou has topped the scale of Chinese historical epics again cause those costumes, locations, and production design are fucking incredible. I'd see this just for the visual look...according to Monkeypeaches again, this is the most expensive Chinese movie now to date ($45 million, I believe The Promise held the record before with $37 mill) but unlike The Promise I'm sure this will actually be good...and thankfully there shouldn't be any retarded CGI in this to ruin the beauty of the surroundings.
And finally, Gong Li and Chow Yun Fat in a movie? I'm in.

And finally, Gong Li and Chow Yun Fat in a movie? I'm in. Yeah I think you are right, this one should fall more on the dramatic side than martial arts. But I thoroughly enjoyed both Hero & HOFD. Yun Fat & Gong Li a plus, I'm just tired of seeing Ziyi in all the martial arts movies. I think she's great and all, but its refreshing to see someone else. But I'll end up seeing "the Banquet too. I also want to see Riding Alone, bummer about the non eng sub, but isn't it playing at the toronto film fest. Lucky me, it comes out this weekend in NY.
