I recently went out to my local video store and rented a copy of Bottle Rocket on DVD. Now as a lover of Wes Anderson, The Wilson Brothers and the crime genre, I knew I was in for a treat.
That is....until I got home and opened the case. OH MY FUCKING GOD!!! I've seen some bad DVDs in my time, but this one looks as if someone was eating pizza while watching the movie, used the disc to soak up the grease and then proceeded to use it as a frisbee to play fetch with his dog, used it to blow their nose and finished it all up by having a herd of cattle run over it. Then they repeated the action on the other side of the disc.

(most scratches didn't show, but you can imagine how bad they are, judged by the shit stains all over it)
I had to take 4 pics (on different camera settings) to show HALF of the nasty stains and scratches. It totally escapes me how anyone can be so goddamn ignorant of another's property and mess it up this badly.
So, share your mistreated DVD stories...

getting movies from.....
Netflix is usually not that bad. I purposely look on the back or if its doublesided to survey the condition of the disc before inserting into the player. If I don't the player catches the scratch which cant be helped. Once its scratched its fucked up for good. Smug marks I usually can get it off but I question if it is finger prints if ya know what I mean. As for the libraries I usually get 3/4's of them in good to ok condition. There are the ocassional sratches n stuff but jeeez..... I know it aint yours but CHRIST do you handle your DVD's like that?!?! I will purposely freak seeing ppl mishandled a DISC.

I usually wipe off smudge marks and finger prints, but this disc had (as seen in the pics) brown and white crust on it (i don't even want to begin to imagine what they are) that I actually had to use Windex and all the strength in my thumb to remove.

I've had similar problems like that when renting CDs at the library. This is why it took me a long time to listen to The Beatles' Revolver album because of some ignorant music listener.

Why couldn't they use the CD technology but put them in flat plastic cases like floppy discs? Would it not save a LOT of people from otherwise unavoidable grief and frustration?
Regardless, those are some FUCKED UP DVDs like I've never seen.

It looks like he's holding it with his thumb in the center hole - I'd say that's about the best you can do. From the angles you might be thinking he's just holding it in his hand??
Slightly off topic, but I got my copy of Nirvana's Bleach in guitar glass because some metal heads were throwing it around frisbee style - disappointed with it. I asked if I could have it instead of it being destroyed, and they went with it - even went and found the case which they'd destroyed and gave me the CD inserts. Surprisingly the thing plays fine. Nice guys, but definitely didn't know how to handle discs.

I put my index finger in the hole and my thumb on the side.

Ah yeah, I mistyped; that's how I hold mine too.
And to B.E.3 - I misunderstood your post. No doubt the disc has been mishandled.

When I rent from Netflix, I NEVER get em like that - BUT, 9x out of 10 when I get em from Hollywood and ESPECIALLY Blockbuster, they resemble those pics to a "T"
I get freaked cuz I really believe humans are scum sucking bastards and just like the fast food geek who just may spit on your food for shits and giggles, and in days of old when a VHS rental wouldnt work after ya put the tape into the machine only to find out the tape was cut, ripped etc, I truly believe people are rubbing their cocks and/or blowing their noses on these discs. Its either that or these freaks have the worst case of sweaty palm I have ever seen - ever shake hands with these people who have SP? Its fucking DISGUSTING.

It would be bad for you if your dick could actually fit in that little hole.

I work at Family Video, where Horniblow got this particular DVD. Not the same store, but at one that is about a hour away.
People, it seems, literally kick the hell out of every DVD that we rent out. We barely get 5 solid viewings before we have to clean a brand new DVD. It is frickin ridiclous.
Go in the store, demand that it be cleaned and they will generally give you that DVD plus a free one to watch. (Make sure they clean that one to)

I've done the "get a free DVD" thing a few times. Usually when the DVD is so badly scratched that it won't play...I feel like an ass doing it though, since I know that it's not their fault.
Fook, how do you know which Family Video that I go to, lol?

I hear ya. People would call up our store and go completely apeshit on me because the DVD they rented wouldn't work properly, and then when they bring it in to show me, they'd remove it with their greased-stained hands by grabbing the disc's surface and yanking it out of the case. It's store policy to give people a free rent if it doesn't work (and I'm more than happy to give it), but I begin to regret it when the customer doesn't know how to handle the fuckin' thing himself. Christ, I won't even start with the kids' section of the store, where I've seen too many "lost,"scratched-to-hell, broken, jam-stained and used-as-frisbees discs that I wonder why they even bother with the children's section anymore.
But mishandling of the discs didn't piss me off as much as the customers who would complain incessantly about it, demand their money back plus ten free rentals, threaten to never come back, and then say that we should test every single disc that gets returned to the store. Yeah, sure, we'll watch every single one of the 300 rentals that get returned on a Saturday night right through to the very end to make sure that they work fine. All two hours of each disc.
Fuckin' people!

I didn't mean to sound like I did know where your Family Video is.
..............or did I???
LOL
Just kidding. But Seriously, if you don't mind me asking, which one do you go to?

I rent from Netflix and had no problem like that also. But they probably check them out and clean them. I used to rent from 3 or 4 locals over the years and I would get dvds that looked like they used them for a coaster. People just don't care and its ashame. Thats why these places raise their rental fees. When I buy certain dvds on Tuesdays, I handle them carefully. My parents borrow dvds from mr once in awhile but they know how to handle them. I loaned to few friends and never had one scratched. I rent from Blockbuster only in between rentals from Netflix if nothing is on tv. But I hated them down their, always pushing rentals deals on you when you are trying to get home and watch the dam dvd you have in your hand.

This is why I never rent DVD's... If I rent anything, it's always VHS (the mom and pop place I go to still has thousands of 'em) and I just buy whatever DVD I wanna see... Those discs are just disgusting, and it's un-fucking-believable the way these fucking slobby assholes treat those discs....
