That voice, THOSE LYRICS, that 80s phase... the man owns.

I can see why some might not like him, but for me, HE OWNS.

I mean...

"Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win. You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin"

"I came upon a wedding that old families had contrived;
Bethlehem the bridegroom,
Babylon the bride.
Great Babylon was naked, oh she stood there trembling for me,
and Bethlehem inflamed us both
like the shy one at some orgy.
And when we fell together all our flesh was like a veil
that I had to draw aside to see
the serpent eat its tail"

"And who are you?" she sternly spoke
to the one beneath the smoke.
"Why, I'm fire," he replied,
"And I love your solitude, I love your pride."

"You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?"

OWNAGE.

I owned the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, so for me it was it was The Future and Waiting For The Miracle that got me into him. Then I bought one of his cds, can't remember which one. It has both of those tracks on there. Coincidentally, Cohen is probably my mom's favorite artist.

"Nobody ever listens to me. I might as well be a Leonard Cohen record."

"Oh, no! I'll be dead and yet still alive! Like Leonard Cohen!"

A couple of Neal-voiced chestnuts from The Young Ones that always amuse me :D

This guy gets into my personal Hall of Fame just with the McCabe & Mrs. Miller soundtrack and for writing Everybody Knows. His version of that is great, but Concrete Blonde's, with Johnette Napolitano's soaring, aching vocals, just murders me every time I listen to it.

Nice to see this topic. I love Leonard Cohen, in my opinion he is the greatest songwriter of all time. Every song he writes is amazing, and that gravelly voice is just so smooth. The man is just pure cool.

I agree. His songs all have meaning and are put across in a voice that is arresting.

I admire his work more than I love it, but I have a huge amount of respect for him and he is as much a poet as Dylan.

The man is a legend. It took me a little while to warm up to his voice, but recently I've been addicted to his songwriting style. He's got a subtle kind of ingenuity about his lyrics and songs.

Possibly the greatest lyricst? I'm not sure. Dylan is up there. They're both obviously haven't different styles. While Dylan sounds to me like he's personally telling me a story, Cohen makes it feel like I'm reading a great story.

I only have his greatest hits, but damn, I'm gonna get more.

You should get the following.

I'm Your Man
New Skin For The Old Ceremony
Songs Of Love And Hate
The Future
Songs From A Room

Those are the ones that I have and they are among the most prized cds I own.

Actually...cheers for starting this thread. It's been a while since I last listened to any Cohen. Think i'll go rectify the situation immediately.
